A NORTH ITALIAN CARVED MARBLE FIGURE OF A SEATED LION PROBABLY 17TH CENTURY Depicted seated, ball under one foot, shaped plinth base 49cm high, 42cm wide, 25cm deep Although the form of the standing lion with ball under one foot was widely known through the Medici lions in Rome- it is slightly more difficult to determine the origin of the seated form. It may be derived, in part, from Donatello's "Marzocco", the heraldic lion of the early 15 th century, seated astride the shield bearing the Florentine fleur-de-lys. It has also been suggested that this pose and form is derived from slightly further afield- the Chinese Buddhistic temple guardians- an idea carried along the spice trade routes. Condition Report: Weathered and with loss of definition, section of tail missing and loss to plinth edges Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning.
