A PAIR OF GEORGE I WALNUT, PARCEL GILT AND NEEDLEWORK WALL SCONCES
Each inset with pastoral gros and petit-point needlework scene, with gilt floral slip surround, single light below on leaf and mythological animal head branch
each 44cm high, 25.5cm wide
Provenance: Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields House
In style and form these bear close comparison with the Irwin Untermyer single light sconces in The Metropolitan Museum (Accession Number: 64.101.1016, .1017). Gifted by Untermyer in 1964- the sconces had previously come from the Percival Griffiths Collection. Interestingly, whilst the overall form of this lot corresponds closely to the Met pair, another pair, gifted by Untermyer in 1973 have almost identical candle backplates (Accession Number: 1974.28.65, .66).
Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning.
The period needlework exposed to atmosphere and light and with dirt and colour muting- some sections a little loose and with dirt accretion to edges
The frames look to have been cleaned back and with some wear from handling, cleaning and changes to hanging hinges to reverse. Evidently drilled for electricity at some point- now removed and with holes to backs, nozzles and pans. Backplates with some later screws. Gilding has a fairly even colour and lack of wear given age suggesting it may have been refreshed
