Condition Report:
Old marks, scratches and abrasions, some old chips and splits as expected for age and use.
Old splits, chips and cracks. Fading to colour and some water stains/damage.
Some old repairs and replacements. Various old losses. Many old losses to the old parquetry decoration, some of which has been previously disguised/ filled with coloured filler. Some detached sections/ elements have been previously glued/ re-attached but without great care previously and likely need re-attaching with greater care.
Where side handles have previously been attached, these are now lacking, The lock is lacking. The interior of the chest has been later lined with metal (possibly zinc) and attached throughout with small nails (and possibly glue) . The hinges of the lid are possibly later replacements but appear to have some age. The metal key escutcheon to the front may be associated/ later. It appears to be 19th century in date
One of the 'sledge' feet is detached and present inside the chest.
Evidence of old worm throughout as expected for age and has resulted in areas of old fragmentary losses of various size.
Later nails used in various positions throughout to secure elements.

A CHARLES II CARVED PINE CABINET STAND

Condition Report:
The recess measures 70.5cm x 43cm. The depth of the recess is approximately 1cm. Please note the width of the recess tapers slightly: it is 70.5cm at the front, but increases to 71cm towards the back.
Old marks, scratches and abrasions, some old chips and splits as expected for age and use.
Some old repairs and replacements. Some old losses. Evidence of old worm throughout as expected for age. Some increased signs of old worm holes/ damage to the feet/ base of legs (see additional images) One rear feet has a later spliced in element, the other feet have been treated with filler (most visible from the underside) and a later thin pad of timber to secure/ level. One section of the lower part of the front frieze is a later replacement and carved well to match (see images) There are likely some other smaller later replaced elements. The thin rear stretcher of the top is a replacement.
Some use of shaped/ carved timber and filler to disguise old losses. Some use of filler/ composition material disguises slightly larger old losses such as at the side ear/ hair of one of the corner 'term' figures. At this position the material is a 'pink colour. Some other areas are of other tones/ colour.
Later thin blocks of timber applied with glue/ small nails to the reverse of the friezes/ joints to secure. Some old nails of various date put into the larger rear frieze to secure position and to a lesser extent in some other positions.
No obvious breaks through legs.
The remnants of gesso to the surface suggest the table/ base was previously covered in gesso prior to gilding/ painting. There is also evidence that the table/ base was previously cream painted at a later date and since cleaned away mainly. (See additional images)
As catalogued, this table will have formerly the base for a cabinet. The current inset top is a later addition. The table/ stand is of solid structure overall.

There are losses, observations and restorations including: cracks to the seat; there is some evidence of worm, some holes with filler; some repaired and possibly replaced spindles; later timber patching to the top of the hoop area; some repairs including later pins/dowels; large chip to one pad foot; vacant holes to the leg joint area on the underside of the seat suggesting a previous repair/support; some traces of dark staining.

See Geoffrey Beard and Christopher Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture, Thomas Pistor (1694-d by 1711) is recorded as 'The Cabinet', Ludgate Hill, London, joiner and cabinet maker'. Pistor was a member of the Joiners' Company. On his death by 1711, his stock to be sold included 'three fine japan'd and walnut cabinets, five walnut, one India scrutore'. A kingwood fall-front cabinet formerly in the collection of the Hon Basil Ionides is inscribed 'Mr Thomos Pistor, Ludgate Hill, London'. For a related mirror with red and gold verre églomisé borders see The Metropolitan Museum, New York, accession number: 64,101,1001, possibly by Thomas and René Pelletier, circa 1690.
For a mirror with related verre églomisé classical figures under canopies to the borders possibly by Thomas and René Pelletier see Victoria and Albert Museum, London. 'The glass border was decorated on the back by applying gold leaf, engraving a pattern in gold and then applying a layer of ... paint to fill the pattern. This was called 'mosaic work'. It was later given the name verre églomisé, after the Parisian picture framer Jean-Baptiste Glomy. The ornamental pattern used here is close to the engravings of Jean Berain (d 1711), court designer to Louis XIV. The mirror may have been made in the workshop of Thomas Pelletier (d after 1725) and René Pelletier (d1726), sons of Jean Pelletier, a Huguenot carver and gilder from Paris. Their workshop was in Covent Garden, London.'
For a related carved giltwood mirror with verre églomisé borders circa 1700 see Graham Child, World Mirrors 1650-1900 , Sotheby's Publications, 1990, p183, pl 321, the decoration is described as 'typical of Berain's rather whimsical style are the linear arabesques, grotesques and scrolls worked in verre églomisé'.

Old chips, splits and some losses.
Gilding has been refreshed at some point.
Gilt surface with rubbing, chips and some losses.
No candle arms present.
Candle arm fixtures are 18th century replacements.
Bevelled mirror plates are replaced and sit loose in the frame. They have some very minor depletion and grey spots.
Old holes to back from previous fixtures.
Backboards are replaced.
Central supporting block/stretcher to the back is later.

The fall enclosing stepped recesses and drawers, the underside of two drawers with sketches of a house and a lion, possibly preliminary sketches for the japanned decoration, the serpentine drawer to the base with fitted divisions, the reverse with printed label 'Frans. & John Booker Efsex Bridge DUBLIN'

Francis and John Booker took over their father John's business when he died in 1750. The elder John Booker was recorded as a 'Looking Glass merchant' when he married early in 1711 or 1712 and his sons were listed in the Dublin trade directories from 1761-1772. The presence of the mid 18th century Francis and John Booker trade label on this japanned dressing mirror of an early date could be accounted for by the brothers selling items from their father's stock from an earlier period.
For examples of trade cards and later mirrors by Francis and John Booker see The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2007; the endpapers shows a trade card 'Fras & Jno. Booker Essex Bridge Dublin Sell Looking Glafses ... Dreffing Glaffes in Mohogany Walnut & Japanned Frames...Glafses for Coaches, Chariots, & Post Chaises ... Chandeliers Brafs and Wood Lanthorns of various Sizes for Halls in Brafs Frames...', this extensive range of goods offered might suggest that the Booker brothers, who were listed as 'glass grinders' and 'seller; of Essex Bridge' until 1772, were retailers as well as makers, which could be an alternative explanation for Francis and John's mid 18th century printed trade label being on this early 18th century japanned dressing mirror. 'This trade card is probably one of the most elaborate executed in Dublin at this time... The extent of their wares, as revealed in both the description and illustrations incorporated into the border of the trade card, is also exposed in an advertisement the brothers placed in Faulkner's Dublin Journal, 14-17 July 1764.' An advertisement of 1761 states 'Francis and John Booker, Glass Sellers are removed to Essex-street, directly facing the bridge ... and hope for the continuance of their friends and the public to their said shop.'
See The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2007, pp140-146, including pl 199 for an identical label. Their label is found on the reverse of many mirrors, though most dating from the third quarter of the 18th century.
