There are scratches, marks, knocks, cracks, chips and abrasions consistent with age and use.
There are losses, observations and restorations including: the top with cracks, marks, some filler, a sectional join opened; the underside with some later staining and later bearers, one of which is cracked; the top lifts off the base; some evidence of staining; some cracks/open joins including to the knees of the legs; the column with some cracks generally along the grain of the timber; the feet with some dappled water marks; the feet worn; there is some evidence of worm; overall this piece has the feel of a country table with a warm glow in rustic condition.

For related writing tables see Christopher Gilbert & Tessa Murdoch, John Channon and Brass-Inlaid Furniture 1730-1760, pl 80-83. The use of padouk with partridge wood crossbanding and brass inlay closely relates to that on the slope of a bureau branded 'J Graveley'. The Graveley attributed rectangular tables in plates 80-83 have, in common with this octagonal tripod table; the use of padouk crossbanded with partridge wood, closely related interlaced strapwork in brass; husk and graduated dot brass inlay; the top is centred in brass with a shield shaped cartouche for the engraving of a family crest or coat of arms. The 'partridge wood' referred to in all these descriptions appears to be a contemporary term for a timber that does not have the distinctive grain of what is generally described as partridge wood from the early 19th century onwards.

See Christie's, London, 5-19 July 2022, lot 55. This lot was probably bought in the 1930s by Solomon Joseph Gubbay, a rope and jute merchant, who formed an eclectic collection of furniture. See also a related table in padouk with similar brass-inlay, Christie's, London, 27 November 2003, lot 5 (£139,650).

There are scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.
There are losses, observations and restorations including: the finish and engraving of the brass with some wear; the central cartouche now vacant of a coat of arms; some filled holes visible to the top corresponding to the screws of the bearers; lacking some small sections and stringing and brass, some fine cracks; cracks, filler and some staining to the turned column; a repaired crack to the knee of one leg.

Matthew Gilbanks (Gillbank) (fl.c.1834-1850) was listed in 1834-39 Gillow's Petty Ledger. He is named as craftsman for a mahogany commode for Ferguson & Co's customer Mr. Lloyd in February 1840; and an Albuera wood tea chest for Ferguson & Co. in December 1850.

Condition Report:
There are some marks, scratches, chips, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use, some to the extremities and edges.
Overall the piece is cleaned.
Some sections of replacement and losses including: small repairs to the lower slats that engage with the notched ratchet section; some chips to the notched ratchet.
All that said these comments on condition are only apparent on close up inspection.

There are losses, observations and restorations including:
Some veneer patching to the top and elsewhere. Some cracks along the grain of wood with some use of filler. Inset bands of timber to the underside of the lower tier (possibly to prevent bowing). The interior of the drawer later stained.

This unusual "novelty" display cabinet in the form of an 18th Century French Sedan Chair was supplied by Mawer & Stephenson, Fulham Road, London to Burton Henry Philips for the Drawing Room of The Heath House, a gothic revival mansion in Staffordshire, in 1907.
