A CHARLES I NEEDLEWORK PICTURE EMBLEMATIC OF FIDELITY CIRCA 1641 Woven in coloured silks on cream ground with French knot patterning, central girl and her dog surrounded by animals and birds including a kingfisher, Royal lion and leopard, squirrel, manor house beyond with mica windows and the sun beyond, later set into glazed frame panel 24.5cm x 35cm, frame 28cm x 38cm Provenance: Simon Sainsbury, Esq., Christie's London, 18 June 2006, lot 219, where purchased by Robert Kime Labelled to the reverse with a brief description in ink, together with an older printed label: 'Opus Domina nobili Strafford acu pictun, cui maritus vir illustrissimus AD 1641 Carolo I Rege ultimo supplicio affectus est.' (This Strafford work was made with a needle by a noble lady, for whom an illustrious married man paid the ultimate price in the year A.D 1641 under King Charles I) Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Overall with some colour muting from sunlight exposure. The whole with gauze like covering material. Some old remedial work to tears most notably left of figure, below building section and above right of houses. There are further creasing areas beneath sections such as leopard, figure and other places- which may well conceal further old remedial restitching. A VICTORIAN WALNUT CARVING OF A BIRD OF PREY ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM WHITE, CIRCA 1870 Probably a newel post finial, the bird with flowing scroll issuing from its beak, shield to the front, standing amid oak leaves and acorns 60cm high, base 18cm diameter Provenance: Bishops Court, Clyst St. Mary, Devon, sold, Bearne's auctioneers, 26 September 1994, where purchased by Robert Kime Bishops Court was a Gothic mansion extensively remodelled by William White in 1860-1864 for the Garrett family. Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The whole with the rubbing and wear from use as a newel finial. Loss to detail of top of chain. Surface dirt which has settled into crevice details and accumulated around areas like the beak. Some shrinkage cracks throughout- notably to neck, body and to base and two small old vacant screw holes visible to base of back. Pole/support hole to base underside. The whole looks to have been quite loosely framed- probably not set onto a stretcher and it has dropped with rumpling across the whole. Edges with what appear to be later textile banding. The whole with colour muting and with some spot stains- notably to corners. Small areas of old remedial repairs most notably to left of two upper flowers and around sun. Small insect hole losses. Areas of remedial tightening up stitch visible notably around centre and to the sky. Colours are slightly muted and whiter threads have browned from sunlight exposure which has led to former details in the skies and around the upper section of trees now only existing as faint shadows of branches, birds, far off building etc The border almost certainly a replacement which suggests that the main field may originally have been slightly larger.
