A SET OF FOURTEEN REGENCE STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD AND UPHOLSTERED CHAIRS POSSIBLY FRENCH, LATE 19TH CENTURY Including a pair of armchairs, upholstered in red cotton covers with applied interlaced silk strapwork, carved throughout with foliage, flowerheads and strapwork bordered crosshatched panels, the seat rails centred by foliate cartouches and the cabriole legs headed by foliate wreathed cabochons, with scrolled feet, some obscure pencil inscriptions to seat rails, possibly the names of the chairmakers or gilders, one with green label LUTON each 109cm high, 53cm wide, 50cm deep Provenance: Sir Julius Wernher, 1st Bt. (1850-1912), Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire, in the Dining Room, by whom bequeathed, through his widow Alice, Lady Wernher, subsequently Lady Ludlow (1862-1945), to their son Sir Harold Wernher, 3rd Bt., G.C.V.O. (1893-1973), Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire, in the Dining Room, and by descent until sold Christie's, London 7 th July 2000, Works of Art from the Wernher Collection, lots 135 and 136 (two sets of fourteen). Condition Report: There are the inevitable minor dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use, the chairs all structurally secure. There are chips to the carving and wear to the gilding (and probably the odd inevitable repair), in places the wear to the gilding reveals the red bole beneath, eg the terminals of the arms. The tops of the legs all with scuffing revealing the wood beneath the gilding. The upholstery in good order, the covers clean with just minor localised marks or stains and more general fading/discoloration. The applied strapwork and piping with minor localised lifting.
