This present work is a preliminary design of Tipping Triangles permanently installed at Aston University in Birmingham. The final conception is constructed of stainless steel and moves with the motion of the water as it rushes down each of the three tipping triangles. Simon Hepworth Nicholson was the son of Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Following in his parent's footsteps Nicholson studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art between 1953-1954. In 1964 Simon moved to the USA to teach at the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia and then at the University of Berkeley, California. Before Simon returned to England he held solo exhibitions in both San Francisco and Pittsburg. In 1999, following his death, the Falmouth College of Arts held a retrospective exhibition of his work. Angela Conner worked as a studio assistant to Barbara Hepworth in the early 60s, it is likely the present piece was acquired as a result of this mentorship.

A photograph (n.52256) of 1964 held in the Zeri Collection shows that part of the veil above the head was once covered with white paint.
Condition Report:
The canvas has recently been relined and presents various damages at the borders, where quite evident sections of paint have fallen. UV light reveals an unevenly thick applied varnish, various retouches on the head, such as on the mouth, chin, nose, and on the forehead, especially on the creases. Extensive retouching has been done on the bust of the figure, a 40cm diameter patch of painting fluoresces, and might have been entirely restored. Likewise, most of the upper left corner fluoresces as well. To conclude, various marks and superficial damages are present on the borders, especially on the left border and bottom left corner.

The canvas has been lined, but this appears to be a very old reline. Losses and flaking throughout although the majority of the paint surface appears to be stable. Surface scratching throughout, together with some light craquelure and paint shrinkage. There is a larger scratch with some associated loss to the upper right quadrant (approx. 10cm). There is a patch (verso) to the lower right quadrant (approx. 10cm) Rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. The canvas at the extreme edges is also starting to wear thin. Surface dirt and dirty varnish throughout. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching throughout. There is also a heavy varnish which may be concealing further overpaint.

Condition Report:
The canvas presents a subtle craquelure across the surface. A few dots of paint loss are present near the left and right border, especially where there are some creases in the canvas. There a few, but hardly noticeable, dirt spots near the neck of the sitter. To conclude, UV light reveals no evident signs of restauration.
The framed measurements are: 105 x 87 cm

The canvases have both been lined. Surface dirt and craquelure throughout, however the paint surface seems secure. Rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. The paint wearing thin in some areas, particularly to the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouching throughout both canvases.

Condition Report:
Both canvases have been lined. Craquelure and stretcher marks visible. Some light surface dirt throughout and rubbing and abrasions along the framing edges. The Sheep Herding canvas with a small patch (verso) which corresponds with some old repair (recto).
Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching to Sheep Herding throughout. Cattle Droving with some very minimal scattered spots of overpaint to the left edge, otherwise there is no evidence of restoration or repair.

Relined. Surface dirt throughout. Fine craquelure scattered throughout the surface. Retouching visible in natural light to the upper right quadrant, most notable to the upper right hand stretcher where cracking must have occurred. Inspection under UV reveals light scattered retouching and more concentrated retouching to the upper right as mentioned above.
