The lacquer 18 th century, incorporating refreshment to the japanning, the two door cabinet depicting birds in watery and hilly landscapes and waterside pavilions, the interior and back with black and gilt lacquer derived from panels of a Chinese screen, on a George II stand carved with foliage, the frieze centred by a shell and hung with drapery swags, the acanthus-wrapped legs headed by lion masks and with hairy paw feet

Condition Report:
Generally good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are the inevitable minor dents marks and scratches. The japanned front and sides with extensive repair, notably to the raised decoration. The lacquer with typical cracking/crazing, especially so on the back which is quite badly distressed. The cabinet was never fitted other than possibly with a shelf. The stand has been stripped and has a slightly `hairy' surface.

Provenance: Tring Park, Herts, possibly acquired by Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (d,1879) or his son Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild (d.1915).
Tring Park was given by Charles II after his Restoration in 1660 to Sir Henry Guy who became Secretary to the Treasury and built a new manor house to designs by Sir Christopher Wren. The estate was sold to Sir William Gore in 1705 and then passed by descent and sale. Lionel Nathan de Rothschild began renting the property as a summer home after 1838 and ultimately bought the house in 1872, making significant alterations to designs by George Devey. Lionel's son Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild took up residence with his young family, a belated wedding gift from his father, and though Nathaniel spent much of his time in London, his family remained largely at Tring which also housed Nathaniel's large collection of art and objet's d'art. Nathaniel's son Walter occupied the house with his mother after 1915 and the estate was eventually broken up and sold piecemeal in 1938.

Condition Report:
With wear, ink and water marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning.
Historic repairs including: small section of slip veneer to the book rest upper edge, top left hand corner of fall, later screws and some loss around fall hinges, small slip of repair above escutcheon of lowest drawer,
Small old repair and loss to edge moulding to its left hand front edge and with corresponding old repair to projecting edge to opposing side. Internal holes to metalwork with some wear and loss- the metalwork feels to be of the correct period and showing commensurate signs of use and wear. They have probably been remounted into the frame as there is a slight asymmetry to their mounting heights
Natural shrinkage around edges- some gaps visible and small area of surface movement to frame and linings, loss to upper right hand side of its top panel. Some later internal blocks. Wear and small gaps around recess point to fall key aperture.
With working key to fall. Lacks metalwork to key recess point.

Y AN INDIAN SOLID EBONY ARMCHAIR
COROMANDEL COAST, LATE 17TH CENTURY
Of typical form, boldly carved throughout with flowers and foliage and with spiral turned uprights, the shaped back with leaf bud finials above scrolled arms and a later caned drop-in seat, the legs joined by box stretchers

Carved ebony chairs were made throughout South East Asia during the second half of the 17th Century, particularly along the Coromandel Coast of India and in Batavia (Indonesia). These ebony chairs were conceived at the end of the 17th Century, when a new style of ebony furniture became fashionable in the Dutch colonies, between circa 1680 and 1720.
Dutch colonial chairs were considered entirely appropriate for the decoration of Romantic antiquarian interiors in England during the second half of the 18th Century and most of the 19th Century, as they were thought to be Tudor. This tradition was compounded by Horace Walpole at the time he was furnishing his Gothic mansion, Strawberry Hill in Middlesex. Having seen a pair of ebony chairs in Esher Place, Surrey, where Cardinal Wolsey had lived from 1519, he immediately associated them with Wolsey, reinforcing a tradition which survived for many years (C. Wainwright, 'Only the True Black Blood', Furniture History Society Journal , XXI, 1985, pp. 250-254). Walpole himself acquired such chairs including, in 1763, eighteen chairs and two tables of solid ebony from Stoughton House, Huntingdonshire, the seat of the Conyers family, which he placed in the Holbein Chamber at Strawberry Hill. Several chairs of this type also furnished St. Michael's Gallery at Fonthill Abbey - William Beckford's supreme folly.

Spetchley Park, Worcestershire.
Condition Report:
Good, structurally secure and good consistent colour. There are the inevitable minor dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. The tortoiseshell is well preserved. Mirror replaced and re-backed, probably in the late 19th century, and re-using the earlier tortoiseshell and armorial.

This form of lady's dressing-table was invented in the early 19th century and grand examples were supplied by Parisian ébénistes and marchand-merciers such as Jacob-Desmalter & Cie, and Francois Remond. A related example is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (acc. no. W17.1 -3.1987).
Condition Report:
Good, structurally secure and of consistent colour. There are the inevitable dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. The mirror slightly foxed around its edge. Some chips to the mahogany veneers, mostly to leading edges or associated with constructional shrinkage, some consequent small repairs. The marble in good order. Ormolu slightly tarnished. Some of the ormolu mounts are possibly added later as they seem to be of different quality and stylistically inconsistent.

Generally good condition, structurally secure with wear and tear, dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. One cabinet is much more sun faded than the other, the faded cabinet lacking drawer lock and with six drawers. The cabinets presumably from the same workshop at the same moment but having had different recent histories. Minor lifting to the ebony line inlay. The marble tops both replaced.
Note that the `partridge wood' is probably in fact Botany Bay Wood or Casuarina (Allocasuarina) which has a similar appearance to partridge wood proper but has been routinely referred to as the latter in the trade. Gillows were among the earliest British makers to use Australian woods imported from the new settlements in New South Wales in the 1790s.

The commode follows a pattern and technique popularised in the early 18 th century by the ébéniste Andr é -Charles Boulle, and which persists to the present. The much more elaborate prototype for the basic form is the pair of commodes supplied in 1708-09 by Boulle for Louis XIV's bed-chamber at the Palais de Trianon; Boulle produced at least another five examples based on descriptions in Parisian 18 th century Paris auction catalogues, and versions of the same, of the highest quality, were still, or again being produced in the second half of the 19 th century by Parisian makers including Henry Dasson, Charles Guillaume Winckelsen and Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener, even in London in the mid-19 th century furniture makers of the calibre of Robert Blake `Buhl manufacturer and cabinet inlayer'(d. circa 1843) (and the various iterations of the firm continued by his four sons) were making copies of the Trianon Palace commodes (see the Frick Collection, New York, acc' no. 1916.5.03). Boulle of course produced less elaborate versions of this commode, including a so-called table-en-huche , displaying typical gilt-bronze mounts and marquetry of brass and tortoiseshell, with a single drawer and portor marble top (sold Sotheby's, New York, 4 October 1991, lot 269).
Other early 18 th century Parisian ébénistes producing comparable work include Joseph Poitou (master in 1718). Poitou's father Philippe had supplied precious parquet floors for royal residences between 1678- 1687, married André Charles Boulle's sister Constance and worked directly for Boulle from 1674 - 78. Joseph followed his father's trade and when he eventually established his own workshop in 1716 on rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires it is clear that he was heavily influenced by the work of his uncle. In his workshop he employed a young Charles Cressent who almost certainly designed bronze mounts for Poitou's furniture. Recent research published in Calin Demetrescu, Les Ébénistes de la Couronne sous le règne de Louis XIV , Lausanne, 2021, has reattributed many pieces formerly credited to Boulle to lesser-known makers such as Poitou, including a commode in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art (obj' no. 1965.167). Another commode from the collection of M. Hubert de Givenchy, attributed to Poitou was sold Christie's, Paris, 14 June 2022, lot 37 (EUR 252,000). It featured acanthus corner mounts of similar pattern though with diapered panels rather than the bearded and turbaned masks on the present lot, the handle pattern and lion-feet are similarly related.
Another commode of identical shape was attributed to Noël Gérard, ébéniste and marchand-mercier , active between 1710 - 36, established in rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine in 1719. Gérard became one of the most important marchand-merciers in Paris, his clientele including the Comte de Clermont and foreign ambassadors such as the ambassador of Spain and the Marquis de Castellas. The lavish decoration of the commode is executed in tortoiseshell, colourful polychrome-tinted horn and contre-partie brass inlay (sold Sotheby's, Hôtel Lambert, Une Collection Princière, Vol. III, A travers l' H ô tel Lambert , Paris, 13 October 2022, lot 506, EUR 163,800 including premium) and relates to another in première-partie, illustrated in A. Pradère, L'Art du Mobilier Français , Paris, 1990, p.113, fig.70. A bureau plat in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art bears Gérard's stamp NG, it displays prominently ormolu masks similar to the present lot and the drawer handles are of closely related pattern. It has been recorded that other ébénistes supplied him with furniture carcasses to be decorated and mounted with bronzes from his own workshop, demonstrating the commercial relationships that existed between Parisian craftsmen with complementary skills and suggests the possibility that both Poitou and Gérard may have had some involvement in the making of the present lot.

The mirror frame, a tour-de-force of wood carving, is characteristic of the Baroque style that was born in Rome around 1620 and spread throughout mainland Europe in the 17 th and early 18 th centuries. The flamboyant three dimensional composition typifies the Baroque desire for luxuriance and lavish ornamental decoration, a style that was disseminated in Italy and beyond through published designs such as those of Filippo Passarini. His book of designs was published in Rome in 1698 - Nuove inventioni d'ornamenti d'architettura e d'intagli diversi: utili ad argentieri, intagliatori, ricamorti at altri professori della buone arti del disegno, featuring among others two designs for grandiose mirror frames that clearly represent prototypes for the present lot (pl.15).
Perhaps the best known exponent of this style is the sculptor Andrea Brustolon (1662 - 1732). Born in Belluno, north of Venice, he trained first with the Genoese sculptor Filippo Parodi, then moved to Rome 1678 - 80 where he finessed his craft through exposure to and study of the work of Bernini before moving back to Venice. His best known work is the extensive suite of furniture supplied to the nobleman Pietro Venier, now in the Ca' Rezzonico, Venice. This included a large side table and vase stand of boxwood and ebony, designed as an ensemble for the display of Japanese porcelain, depicting allegories of Hercules with the Hydra and Cerberus, moors and reclining river gods. Brustolon's design for an allegorical frame, 1700 - 10, is in the collection of the Museo Civico, Bulluno (inv. 867) and it is this style of carving with which he has become synonymous. However a mirror frame by Brustolon also in the Museo Civico offers a slightly more restrained vocabulary with putti among dense acanthus and flowerheads, consistent with the lot offered here. After 1685 Brustolon limited his work to just devotional sculptures and tabernacles.
A carved and white-painted pine altarpiece in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is attributed to Brustolon. It is believed to have been made around 1720 for the Piloni family and was in the Villa Doglioni dal Mas, Belluno. A related mirror of 1680 -1700, albeit from Germany, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. no, 67.171) .

Carved throughout with foliage and scrollwork, the back with arcaded rails and bobbins, the seat covered in contemporary gros and petit-point tapestry on turned and square section legs 48cm high, 26cm wide, 24cm deep
Condition Report:
Generally good, structurally secure with dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. There is a small shrinkage split to top of front left leg, some of the stretcher joints are re-pegged, rear stretcher possibly replaced. The tapestry a bit shabby with some small holes.

Condition Report:
Overall in good condition, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are the inevitable minor dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. As noted the marble is replaced, it has some minor edge chips, the table previously had a wooden top as indicated by redundant screw pockets in the frieze, but presumably originally had a marble top. Some scrolled ears possibly replaced.

Note the `plinth' only extends across the front, not the sides, so the chest actually rests on stile feet. There is a small patch to centre top and moulded front edge of the lid, probably as a consequence of the lock being forced.
