Y A REGENCE ORMOLU-MOUNTED EBONY AND BRASS-INLAID COMMODE CIRCA 1720, IN THE MANNER OF ANDRE-CHARLES BOULLE, POSSIBLY BY JOSEPH POITOU Of bombé outline with original breche marble top above two walnut-lined drawers, inlaid overall with interlaced and scrolling leafy and flowering tendrils, the upper drawer displaying a lion mask, foliage and central handle, the lower drawer with wreathed female masks and two handles, the apron with a further wreathed mask and the angles with bearded masks, scrolls and diminishing foliate chutes to foliate lion paw feet, incorporating 18 th / 19 th Century restorations 92cm high, 129cm wide, 61cm deep The commode follows a pattern and technique popularised in the early 18 th century by the ébéniste Andr é -Charles Boulle, and which persists to the present. The much more elaborate prototype for the basic form is the pair of commodes supplied in 1708-09 by Boulle for Louis XIV's bed-chamber at the Palais de Trianon; Boulle produced at least another five examples based on descriptions in Parisian 18 th century Paris auction catalogues, and versions of the same, of the highest quality, were still, or again being produced in the second half of the 19 th century by Parisian makers including Henry Dasson, Charles Guillaume Winckelsen and Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener, even in London in the mid-19 th century furniture makers of the calibre of Robert Blake `Buhl manufacturer and cabinet inlayer'(d. circa 1843) (and the various iterations of the firm continued by his four sons) were making copies of the Trianon Palace commodes (see the Frick Collection, New York, acc' no. 1916.5.03). Boulle of course produced less elaborate versions of this commode, including a so-called table-en-huche , displaying typical gilt-bronze mounts and marquetry of brass and tortoiseshell, with a single drawer and portor marble top (sold Sotheby's, New York, 4 October 1991, lot 269). Other early 18 th century Parisian ébénistes producing comparable work include Joseph Poitou (master in 1718). Poitou's father Philippe had supplied precious parquet floors for royal residences between 1678- 1687, married André Charles Boulle's sister Constance and worked directly for Boulle from 1674 - 78. Joseph followed his father's trade and when he eventually established his own workshop in 1716 on rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires it is clear that he was heavily influenced by the work of his uncle. In his workshop he employed a young Charles Cressent who almost certainly designed bronze mounts for Poitou's furniture. Recent research published in Calin Demetrescu, Les Ébénistes de la Couronne sous le règne de Louis XIV , Lausanne, 2021, has reattributed many pieces formerly credited to Boulle to lesser-known makers such as Poitou, including a commode in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art (obj' no. 1965.167). Another commode from the collection of M. Hubert de Givenchy, attributed to Poitou was sold Christie's, Paris, 14 June 2022, lot 37 (EUR 252,000). It featured acanthus corner mounts of similar pattern though with diapered panels rather than the bearded and turbaned masks on the present lot, the handle pattern and lion-feet are similarly related. Another commode of identical shape was attributed to Noël Gérard, ébéniste and marchand-mercier , active between 1710 - 36, established in rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine in 1719. Gérard became one of the most important marchand-merciers in Paris, his clientele including the Comte de Clermont and foreign ambassadors such as the ambassador of Spain and the Marquis de Castellas. The lavish decoration of the commode is executed in tortoiseshell, colourful polychrome-tinted horn and contre-partie brass inlay (sold Sotheby's, Hôtel Lambert, Une Collection Princière, Vol. III, A travers l' H ô tel Lambert , Paris, 13 October 2022, lot 506, EUR 163,800 including premium) and relates to another in première-partie, illustrated in A. Pradère, L'Art du Mobilier Français , Paris, 1990, p.113, fig.70. A bureau plat in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art bears Gérard's stamp NG, it displays prominently ormolu masks similar to the present lot and the drawer handles are of closely related pattern. It has been recorded that other ébénistes supplied him with furniture carcasses to be decorated and mounted with bronzes from his own workshop, demonstrating the commercial relationships that existed between Parisian craftsmen with complementary skills and suggests the possibility that both Poitou and Gérard may have had some involvement in the making of the present lot. Condition Report: Generally good, structurally secure, with dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. Slight lifting to some of the brass inlay. AN ITALIAN CARVED FRUITWOOD MIRROR VENICE, LATE 17TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF ANDREA BRUSTOLON The rectangular plate in a pierced surround of scrolling acanthus and trailing flowered ribbons, the cresting centred by a mask and with vases of flowers to each corner 119cm high, 88.5cm wide Provenance : Private collection, Belgium. Spiazzi, Scultura Lignea Barocca nel Veneto, Milan, 1997 The mirror frame, a tour-de-force of wood carving, is characteristic of the Baroque style that was born in Rome around 1620 and spread throughout mainland Europe in the 17 th and early 18 th centuries. The flamboyant three dimensional composition typifies the Baroque desire for luxuriance and lavish ornamental decoration, a style that was disseminated in Italy and beyond through published designs such as those of Filippo Passarini. His book of designs was published in Rome in 1698 - Nuove inventioni d'ornamenti d'architettura e d'intagli diversi: utili ad argentieri, intagliatori, ricamorti at altri professori della buone arti del disegno, featuring among others two designs for grandiose mirror frames that clearly represent prototypes for the present lot (pl.15). Perhaps the best known exponent of this style is the sculptor Andrea Brustolon (1662 - 1732). Born in Belluno, north of Venice, he trained first with the Genoese sculptor Filippo Parodi, then moved to Rome 1678 - 80 where he finessed his craft through exposure to and study of the work of Bernini before moving back to Venice. His best known work is the extensive suite of furniture supplied to the nobleman Pietro Venier, now in the Ca' Rezzonico, Venice. This included a large side table and vase stand of boxwood and ebony, designed as an ensemble for the display of Japanese porcelain, depicting allegories of Hercules with the Hydra and Cerberus, moors and reclining river gods. Brustolon's design for an allegorical frame, 1700 - 10, is in the collection of the Museo Civico, Bulluno (inv. 867) and it is this style of carving with which he has become synonymous. However a mirror frame by Brustolon also in the Museo Civico offers a slightly more restrained vocabulary with putti among dense acanthus and flowerheads, consistent with the lot offered here. After 1685 Brustolon limited his work to just devotional sculptures and tabernacles. A carved and white-painted pine altarpiece in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is attributed to Brustolon. It is believed to have been made around 1720 for the Piloni family and was in the Villa Doglioni dal Mas, Belluno. A related mirror of 1680 -1700, albeit from Germany, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. no, 67.171) .

AFTER GIAMBOLOGNA (1529-1608)- A BRONZE FIGURE OF MARS ITALO-FLEMISH, 17TH CENTURY On an ebonised wooden base, inset with lapis lazuli panels figure 38cm high, 53.5cm high overall, base 17.5cm wide Provenance: Private collection, Germany. Exhibited : BRONZES DE LA RENAISSANCE, Association Royale Des Demeures Historiques De Belgique, Chateau De Laarne September-October 1967. No.73 " Ecole de Jean Boulogne, Hercule Marchant". Pp.110, illustrated page 111. This bronze depicts a muscular nude male figure striding forward with his right foot, his left arm and hand outstretched, whilst his right hand would have originally held a sword. The bearded head, with the mouth partly open, is sharply turned to the left, whilst the body is represented in a diagonally upward rising movement - the Mannerist figura serpentinata. Designed to be seen in the round, the muscular figure is presented in a carefully calculated, complex stance: by means of the outstretched arms, the striding motion and the emphatic rotation of the upper body, the figure dominates the surrounding space. Mars , or Gladiator as it was sometimes referred to in the early literature, was one of Giambologna's most popular models. The Flemish artist Jean Boulogne (1529-1608), better known by his Italianised name Giambologna, was the most influential Mannerist sculptor in Europe. Giambologna's first encounter with Italy, his adoptive land, happened in 1550 when the young artist set off to Rome to study the great works of antiquity and the masters of the Renaissance. On his way back home, he stopped in Florence where he enjoyed the patronage of the influential Florentine aristocrat Bernardo Vecchietti (1514-1590). Vecchietti's contacts, together with Giambologna's innate talent, eventually led to his introduction to the ruling Medici Grand Dukes. His first Medicean commission (1560) was the seminal marble group of Samson slaying a Philistine , now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (inv. A.7-1954), completed for the future Grand Duke Francesco I (1541-1587), who appointed him as court sculptor a year later in 1561. It was in this decade that Giambologna began producing bronzes, later setting up his workshop and own foundry at Borgo Pinti. His exquisite small bronze statuettes, avidly collected by European connoisseurs and often used by the Medici as diplomatic gifts, disseminated his sophisticated style throughout the courts of Europe. Further carrying his vocabulary across the Alps were the numerous Northern European pupils who trained in his workshop, most notably Adriaen de Vries (1556-1626), Pierre de Francqueville (1548-1615), Hans Reichle (1570-1642), and Hubert Gerhard (1540-1620). A versatile, innovative and prolific sculptor, who produced extraordinarily varied compositions - from mythological scenes to images of the crucified Christ - Giambologna dominated Florentine sculpture in the second half of the sixteenth-century and had an enormous influence on his contemporaries, one that was re-echoed in the seventeenth century by the later generations. The most accurately documented example of this composition was given by Giambologna himself to Christian I, Elector of Saxony (1560-1591) (formerly in the collection of Bayer AG, the statuette, known as the ' Dresden Mars ', was acquired by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) in 2018). The bronze is first documented in the 1587 inventory of the Elector's Dresden Kunstkammer as ' a picture of Mars cast in brass, given by Johan Pollonia [sic] to his Grace the Electo r' - this is the first use of the name Mars. Other remarkable examples include the bronze initialled I.B. (standing for Giambologna's Latin name - Iohannes Bononiensis ) in the collection of the Power Corporation of Canada, Montreal, the cast in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, and The Hohenzollern Mars , sold by Tomasso in 2016. The quality of the present cast, which displays a meticulous attention to detail and surface texture, together with the brassy alloy of the metal and the distinctive facial features, all point to its production in a North European foundry, probably in Germany or the Netherlands.
