Signed Zhang Jiucheng (1092-1159), Calligraphy, ink on paper, signed and with four collectors' seals, 36.8cm x 29cm
Provenance:
Property of a Gentleman and by repute purchased in China in the early 20th century and by family descent.
Zhang Jiucheng came in first place in the palace examinations of 1132, rising to the post of Vice Minister of Justice. A devout Buddhist throughout his life, he also went by the sobriquet "Wugou (Stainless) Layman." Maintaining friendly relations with the monk Dahui Zonggao, he was a lay disciple who fervently supported Chan (Zen) Buddhism. In the early Southern Song, when the court was still at war with the Jin, he supported the war faction and thus came into conflict with the powerful Prime Minister Qin Kui, who supported a pacifist approach. Found guilty of "slandering court policy with Zonggao," he was banished and lived in exile for fourteen years. This letter, also known as the "Palace Shrine Modelbook," was written for Fang Ci (1102-1172) between 1141 and 1142. The structure of the character forms, despite the influence of the two Northern Song calligraphers Su Shi and Huang Tingjian, is flowing and driving with the force of Mi Fu's style, giving it considerable character.
張九成（1092-1159）款 行書《宮祠帖》鏡心
張九成（1092－1159），字子韶。紹興二年殿試狀元，累官至刑部侍郎。生平尊崇佛教，亦號無垢居士。向與僧大慧宗杲友善，為禪門護法居士。南宋初，與金對峙，因挺身支持主戰派，觸怒了當權之秦檜，遂以「與宗杲謗訕朝政」罪名，謫居流放達十四載。 此札或是寫予方滋（1102-1172），則成書於紹興十一、二年間。字形結體雖有蘇、黃兩家遺韻，但見驅筆流暢，縱橫使轉之勢亦見米芾流風，頗富個性。

A Chinese inlaid bronze sword-bearer lamp, 4th-2nd century BC, in the form of a sword bearer standing with his arms held out in front of his chest, holding the stem of a curving shaft rising over his head to support a dish-shaped lamp pan with fluted sides and a center spike, 15.5cm high; and a pair of Chinese bronze bells , 14.5cm long (3)
According to tomb inventories (qiance) this type of lamp is called zhuyong ("lamp-figurine"), and similar lamps have been found in Warring States and Western Han (206 B.C.-A.D. 9) burials. Such lamps may have been used in tombs to provide light during burial rituals, to guide the deceased soul on their afterlife journey, or to embody the soul in the form of an eternal flame during funerary ceremonies. Compare with a very similar lamp at Princeton University Art Museum, accession number 2003-29

Two Chinese bronze ritual Buddhist bottle vases , Tang Dynasty, the bulbous body rising to a waisted neck below a wide everted rim, the large vase 22.2cm high, the smaller vase 17cm high (2)
Made for Buddhist rituals, this bottle vase can be associated with the bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokitesvara). Called an ambrosia vase, it is the type carried by Guanyin and is said to carry the elixir that comforts mortals who are seeking salvation. Compare with a similar vase with cover at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 98.218.1a,b.

Silver items bearing Tan Yue He marks are of outstanding quality. The Chinese firm was commissioned by members of the Thai Royal family to produce a variety of items that can be dated to the 1870s and 1880s.

The shape of this bottle-vase is similar to iron-red-decorated porcelain examples made during the Qianlong period as court gifts to Tibetan monks. The Emperor Qianlong is portrayed with one of these porcelain vases on a table next to him in a painting by Giuseppe Castiglione illustrated by E.S. Rawski and J. A large Chinese Imperial cloisonné archaistic vase, Qianlong period (1736-1795), the magnificent vase decorated to the globular body with two central medallions of landscape scenes, each depicting tiered pavilions nestled amongst jagged cliffs and waves, with cranes and bats in flight above, the long trumpet neck flanked with a large pair of gilt-bronze double phoenix handles and decorated with two cartouches enclosing peach trees issuing from rocks, the inner mouth further decorated with lotus foliage, 58cm high

Daniel Beale and his brother Thomas were Scottish Merchants active in Bombay, Canton and Macau, dealing in Indian cotton, sandalwood, tin, pepper, and Chinese tea. In 1797 they were described as the most prominent of the trading houses on the Chinese coast.
Beale died in England in 1842. In the gallery of St Pancras New Church, London there is a memorial to Thomas Beale of Fitzroy Square and of Millfield House Edmonton, Middlesex, formerly of Canton and Macao, 'a most zealous promoter of the building of this Church and one of the original trustees.'
He was immortalised by the artist Jacques-Laurent Agasse in his painting, 'Daniel Beale at his Farm at Edmonton with his Favourite Horse.'
The present vase, with its exquisite enamelling and elaborately cast handles is undoubtedly made for imperial use and is representative of Qing imperial cloisonné enamels of the highest quality. The Qing Court Collection has a number of cloisonné enamel vessels set with similar gilt-bronze phoenix handles, although very few of them are executed with the same degree of meticulous attention to detail. Examples include a cloisonné enamel zun with handles of similar form but of less elongated form; a censer with handles in the form of phoenix with abstract scrolling bodies; and a censer flanked by a pair of abstract stylised phoenix handles, all dating to the mid-Qing period and illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum - Enamels (3) - Cloisonne in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Beijing, 2011, nos. 77, 197, and 206 respectively. Compare also with a related vase from the George Walter Vincent Smith (1832-1923) collection, formerly exhibited at the Springfield Museum, Massachusetts.

Censers of this type with everted rims were cast in imitation of Daoist vessels and were gifted to Daoist temples by the Xuande Emperor in the 15th century. The present censer is impressive for its tremendous weight and extraordinarily lavish gilding, suggesting that it was possibly made on commission by the court. Compare with another gilt-splashed bronze censer, of different form but with similar irregular gilt-splashed surface, sold at Sotheby's New York, 21st September 2022, Lot 338.
