A Tibetan zitan wood carved torso of a Buddha , Qing Dynasty, the bodhisattva shown seated on a stepped throne and wearing loose robes, 20.5cm high
Much of the zitan that came to China was used for furniture, as the hard grain of the wood made it resistant to splitting and swelling to changes of climate. Smaller quantities were used for boxes and other scholars' accoutrements. Fewer works of sculpture in zitan are known, although the precious nature of the wood meant it would have been an appropriate material for an object of worship. Compare with a gilt and polychromed zitan figure of Simhanada Manjughosha sold, Christie's New York, 12 September 2018, lot 324.

A Chinese huanghuali 'Dragon' balance stand, tianpingjia , 17th or 18th century, the rectangular case set to either side with a rectangular section post joined by an openwork rail and crossbeam, supported at the base by two pairs of openwork spandrels, the stand with one long drawer, with metal scales (2)
Balance stands with scales were widely used as measures when silver was the common currency and were used both domestically and commercially. The Ming dynasty novel Amazing Tales-Second Series , illustrates a balance stand in a Ming home, and a balance stand is shown in use in a shop in the 16th century novel The Gold Lotus, Jin Ping Mei Cihua in vol. 1, chapter 60.
For a similar example see Wang Shixiang and Curtis Evarts, Masterpieces from the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture , Chicago and San Francisco, 1995, pl. 90. A related example with a carved openwork panel from the Dr. S. Y. Yip Collection was sold in at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7th October 2015, lot 113.
