The present lot is notable for its elegant form which is enhanced by the lustrous clair-de-lune glaze in imitation of the celebrated Ru ware of the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127). The Qianlong Emperor was renowned for his fondness for Imperial stoneware of the Song dynasty.

Collection of Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Dingwall DSO (1869-1946)
Born in Caterham, England, Kenneth Dingwall was a highly-decorated officer and collector of East-Asian ceramics. He was made a Lieutenant in the Gordon Highlanders in 1894 before serving in the North West Frontier from 1895 to 1898. Sent to South Africa in 1899 he was in action throughout the Boer War, for which he received the DSO in 1901. After a short retirement from the army in 1904, he re-joined in 1914 and was frequently employed as a Deputy Judge-Advocate during the Great War. An active collector of Chinese ceramics, Dingwall was one of the founding members of the Oriental Ceramic Society which formed in 1921. He belonged to the National Art Collections Fund and was the single largest donor to the Victoria and Albert Museum between 1910 and 1937, leaving a further bequest in 1948, and donating four items to the British Museum. Part of his collection was sold at Sotheby's London on 10 th March 1933, consisting of 90 lots of mostly Tang to Ming ceramics.

The scene is possibly taken from one of the 'Twelve Beauties of Leisure', painted for Prince Yinzhen which is said to have precipitated the depiction of a single elegant lady as a popular subject of many mediums during the Kangxi period.

Provenance:
This pair of dishes does not appear in the Reginald Howard Reed Palmer (RHRP) ledger, but were valued by Christie's for probate in 1970 and assigned the reference number (X) 141EE as being of pre-eminent quality and outstanding national importance. Originally bought by W. Howard and Ada Palmer and passed to RHRP in 1953 upon the death of Ada. Recorded in her estate's probate valuation by Simmons of Basingstoke in 1953, item 39, and described as: 'A pair of Famille Verte circular dishes, decorated with figures, utensils and birds in the reserves with red ground, 14½ in.'

A group of five Chinese Export Meissen style dishes , Qianlong, circa 1760, painted with different pseudo-armorial devices with varying unexplained mottoes, comprising: three oval dishes in sizes, 38cm and smaller and two small bowls 15.5cm diameter (5)
This service has always been a mystery as to why, or for whom, it was originally made, since they are not family arms, but it is sometimes thought that there was a Jesuit connection, although this is by no means proven.
Most of the extensive service was sold by Christie's, North Mymms Park sale of 24-27th September 1979, on behalf of Major Sir George Burns, and was thought to have possibly come from his great-uncle John Pierpont Morgan.
An example is illustrated in, David Sanctuary Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader: Private Market in Chinese Export Porcelain Illustrated from the Hodroff Collection, 1994, pp.132/3.
