Siwa culture flourished in southeast Gansu during the Bronze Age. Pottery jars featuring saddle-shaped mouths belong to a classic pottery type of this civilisation. The characteristic variegated tones of the orange slip-applied surfaces resulting from inconsistencies in temperature during firing make each vessel a unique work of art. Compare also two similar Siwa double-handled jars with saddle-shaped mouths in the Harvard Art Museums, accession nos 2006.170.69 and 2006.170.70.

A Chinese Lushan phosphatic glaze splashed ewer, Tang Dynasty (618-907), the ovoid body raised on a short splayed biscuit foot rising to a flaring mouth rim, set with a pair of small loop handles on the shoulder, the shoulders also set with a curved handle and short cylindrical spout, covered overall with a dark black-brown glaze ending in a line above the foot to expose the oatmeal-coloured body, decorated with large irregular splashes of mottled milky blue, 22cm high

The bluish or yellowish-milky white 'phosphatic' splashes that decorate the dark brown-glazed wares of this type are applied after the initial glazing. A jar of this shape with a similar style of painting, including lozenge-shaped panels of scholars, was excavated in 1976 from a tomb in Yuncheng county, Shandong province, and is illustrated in Wenwu, 1988:6, pl. 7, no. 6. Compare with a similar jar sold at Christie's, 24 July 2020, Lot 59. See another example of very similar size and shape in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (no.390, He Li, Chinese Ceramics 1996), which shows three scenes of the poet Li Bai enjoying wine in a garden.

A jar of similar form and glaze, but painted with mythical beasts and flora, is illustrated, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, Volume 67. 2002-2003, pg.55, in the lecture Ceramics from South of the Clouds: Ceramics from Yunnan , where Cyril Beecher discusses this rare group of underglaze-blue porcelains from Yunnan province. The present jar closely matches his figures 4 & 5, of similar size and shape, with fish and waterweeds on the upper shoulder. Beecher noted that the muted grey-blue colour of the decoration was almost certainly due to the use of the local Yunnan cobalt ore, high in manganese and traces of other metal oxides. Compare with another jar with similar cobalt blue, sold Bonhams, New Bond Street (TL tested), 6 March 2007, Lot 47.
