Tatham (Charles Heathcote, 1772-1842) The grotto at Wanstead Park, Essex, built by Lord Tylney, sketched on the spot June 1822 , detailed study with elevations, plans, and cross-section diagrams of the grotto, extensively inscribed, pen and brown ink, signed with monogram and dated in the lower right, on J. Simmons laid paper with watermark date '1821', sheet 395 x 320 mm (15 1/2 x 12 1/2 in), central horizontal fold, minor toning and surface dirt, unframed, 1822 Provenance: Major Thomas Hohler (formerly a director of Sotheran’s, 1919-1989); Gifted to the present owners; Collection of John and Eileen Harris ⁂ The grounds of Wanstead House were landscaped and planted with formal avenues of trees by George London, one of the leading garden designers of his day. John Rocque was commissioned by the 1st Earl Tylney in 1735 to carry out further work on the gardens, aimed to turn Wanstead into a mini Versailles. The Heritage of London Trust described the Grotto as 'an 18th century survival of one of the grandest houses ever built in England, Wanstead House. Built on the edge of a lake between 1760 and 1764, the Grotto cost £2,000 and was spectacular. Lined with fossils, crystals and carved stone it was an entertainment space as well as an exotic eyecatcher in a period when grottoes and follies were in high fashion. After the house was demolished and it was opened to the public it was much visited and admired. However in 1884, a fire broke out in a storeroom and, because the lake in front was being cleaned and was empty, there was no water to extinguish it. The grotto was badly damaged, with only the outer walls remaining.' The history of Wanstead House involves a Regency period scandal, and the unfortunate story of Catherine Tylney-Long, who inherited the estate and became known as "The Wiltshire Heiress". Tylney-Long was believed to be the richest commoner in England at the time, following the inheritance, and had suitors that included the Duke of Clarence, later King William IV. She eventually chose and married William Wesley-Pole in 1812, but his extravagance, arrogance and cruelty meant the marriage was an exceedingly unhappy one. She died at age 35 in Richmond, Surrey, leaving their children, William, James and Victoria, in the care of her two unmarried sisters, Dorothy and Emma. She had just received a letter from William, whose contents apparently caused her to have some form of seizure.
