AFTER ERNEST MEISSONIER (1815-1891), AN EQUESTRIAN BRONZE OF NAPOLÉON THE 1ST IN 1814
EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Sometimes titled "La Campagne de France", signed to cast E Meissonier, Siot Decauville foundry stamp, numbered 10 and C465
40cm high, the base 37cm x 16.5cm
From the posthumous edition of 50 by Siot-Decauville Paris, the cast run began in 1894 and ended in around 1926.
Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier is perhaps best known for his historical and academic paintings. His work as a sculptor was relatively unknown even within his own lifetime- an artistic practice limited to smaller more private works largely for his own entertainment and practical use. It is likely that he modelled work- usually horse related- in wax and clay in order to achieve better and more realistic depictions in his paintings. After his death it seems that his heirs licensed reproduction of some of these works in bronze in order to help pay off the debts he'd accrued. It is thought that this particular model was used for the painting " La Campagne de France, 1814 " (now in at the Musée d'Orsay). Other bronze casts from the Siot-Decauville foundry are held in museums in Bordeaux and Lille.
Condition Report:
With wear from use, handling and age. Storage looks to have been in a damp place resulting in verdigris build up to recesses and accumulated dirt and old wax throughout- with colour variances from oxidisation and exposure. Will greatly benefit from thorough, light sensitive clean. With some wear and marks to raised edges and details. Rein ends under horse mouth slightly distorted- and look not to be in the correct positions with some elements not connected.

On the 31st March 2014, Her Majesty The Queen unveiled the life-size bronze statue of her Windsor Greys, Daniel and Storm. The term Windsor Grey is used for the grey horses used to draw the carriages and coaches in various Royal ceremonial processions including when the Monarch is Trooping the Colour. They are stabled in the Royal Mews.
Her grandson, the then Duke of Cambridge, was patron of the public fundraising appeal which raised £200,000 to have these horses sculpted and cast by the artist Robert Rattray in commemoration of The Queen's Diamond jubilee. There were just four maquette size models of the statue cast. Due to his generous donation to the appeal the late owner was gifted this maquette. The statue is displayed on the Kings Road/Osborne Road roundabout near the Long Walk, Windsor.

Loss to tips of both her ears and claws on her right paw, signs of some work to both front legs of pup but this may be from the making. Natural inclusions, small spots and a darker vein that runs diagonally across the front. Edge wear and small losses, small knock to her tail. Will benefit from a light remedial clean.

The Guy Reed Will Trust, Copgrove Hall, Yorkshire
In 1802, Antonio Canova was asked if he would fashion a copy of the Medici Venus which Napoleon had removed from Florence to the Musée Napoléon in Paris. Although he agreed to make a copy, the sculpture that he eventually completed in 1811 was quite different from the Medici Venus. It shows a more modest figure, who largely covers her nakedness with a large swag of drapery and lacks the dolphin and the figure of Cupid that accompany the Medici Venus.
Canova produced various versions of this figure: the original now in the Palatine Gallery of The Pitti Palace another in the Residenzmuseum in Munich, and the third in Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California, (formerly in the Lansdowne Collection). A fourth version was sold from the Londonderry collection in 1962 and is today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The original marble Eros di Centocelle was excavated in Centocelle, on the Via Labicana, not far from Rome, by the Scottish neoclassical painter and archaeologist Gavin Hamilton in 1772. It was found without forearms, legs and genitals (later reattached together with the nose). There were probably wings, lost in the excavation - as holes in the back of the original suggest. Briefly at the Louvre between 1797 and 1800 the figure is now in Rome in the Pius-Clementin Museum, Galleria delle Statue, 250.

It has been suggested that this impressive figure could also be titled "Ruth" in reference to the biblical story. However, the iconography of the harvest emblematic of success, fertility and the season of Autumn was also commonly found in Italian workshops in Florence and Rome at this period.

With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The whole with polished surface for skin/flesh and rougher mostly unpolished surface for clothing, corn etc. Some rubbing to rougher surface detailing. Some old signs of damp/exposure.
Natural veining and inclusions. Under UV spot restoration or infill visible to: 2 small points on head, area above her left eye, left hand and fingers, ends of corn, large toe on left foot. Some edge wear and nibbles/chips to base edge. Slightly dirty

Condition Report:
The music box seems to be in working condition and is activated by gently pulling the figure's head forward and releasing when it starts to play- assuming the spring is wound, which releases the catch for the motor.
The knob on the side of the box is to change tunes but should only be pushed/pulled when the cylinder has come to the end of the tune, so has not to bend the pins on the cylinder. Bronze dirty and will benefit from light remedial clean, some rubbing to gilded elements. Seated child lacks end to stick in right hand, and end of drumstick to left hand. Front of face worn from handling and use. Vacant small screw hole to back of standing figure. Some looseness to mounts and some screws not fixing properly
Underside of case is sealed with screws making access to music box impossible without potentially causing damages. Key associated. Well lacks liner
