He was primarily an engraver of maps, charts and globes who moved again in 1783 to 188 Strand. By 1791 he had entered into what appeared to be a relatively casual partnership with his brother, William; this partnership lasted until circa 1816 by which time William and John Cary had moved again to 181 Strand before finally settling in 86 St. James in 1820. A REGENCY EBONISED AND PARCEL GILT ARMCHAIR ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1806-7 The back seat rail stamped 'EW' and 'III' 86cm high, 60cm wide, 65cm deep For near identical chairs firmly attributed to Gillows of Oxford Street see Susan Stuart, GILLOWS of LANCASTER and LONDON 1730-1840, Volume I, Antique Collectors' Club, 2008, p210, pl 186, 'The set may have been made in about 1806-7 when Gillows were furnishing Coilsfield, Tarbolton, Ayrshire for Lord Montgomerie. Amongst the mahogany furniture supplied by the Lancaster business were bookcases, bedsteps,.... which all had the same typical square shaped mouldings which appear on the chairs' top rail astragals picked out in gilt. This same moulding design (which appears on many Gillow pieces). .... These chairs were probably made for the Drawing Room at Coilsfield and indeed they feature in photographs of this room takin in the 1950s prior to Coilsfield being sold by the Montgomerie family. The same legs which feature on the chairs with lion masks and carved paws also appear on a long stool placed before the fireplace in the inner hall at Coilsfield.' The fluted cylindrical finials on top of the lion masks of the present chair arms are identical to those on the sofas and bergere armchairs at Raby Castle, Durham, p211, pl 187. The Raby giltwood suite was probably supplied by Gillows of Oxford Street originally to Cleveland House, St James's Square, London. See also a set of near identical chairs at Mount Stewart, County Down, National Trust Collection numbers: NT 1542392.1 to .12; 'These chairs with the leopard head monopodia and anthemion designs display the influence of the Regency designs of George Smith (c.1786-1826).'
