Y A FINE AND RARE PORTUGUESE MACAO CARVED IVORY DEVOTIONAL PLAQUE PORTUGUESE MACAO, MID 17TH CENTURY Depicting St Jerome kneeling before Christ crucified, gripping the cross in one hand holding a stone in the other symbolic of his asceticism, his hands and feet with the stigmata- a sign of his passionate Christian devotion, his cardinal's hat and robe hanging in the tree, God the Father in the clouds above a lion at the Saint's Feet above him two medieval church towers, the scene probably based on a European engraving, modern stand plaque 12cm high, 8.5cm wide, 1cm deep Provenance : Ex Private collection of the Berkeley Family, Spetchley Park, Worcestershire, catalogued in a 1949 inventory as 'A Carved Panel (4¾' x 3½") of St Jerome Kept in the Strong Room'. In 374 A.D St Jerome became seriously ill in Antioch and two of his travelling companions died. In this state he dreamt that he appeared before God's judgement seat and was condemned for being a Ciceronian rather than a Christian. He took this experience very seriously and became a hermit in the desert of Chalcis in Syria for five years. He gave up the Classics he knew and loved and learnt Hebrew in order to study scripture. Proficient in both Greek and Hebrew, he went on to complete the enormous task of producing a standard Latin text of the Bible which he revised according to the meaning of the original texts. He then began to translate the Gospels and the Psalter and over time produced all, or nearly all, of the Bible in what became known as the 'Vulgate' version. A passionate and devoted Catholic scholar, St Jerome had a difficult temperament and a sarcastic wit, but it has been said of him that his immense learning was unmatched by any other Christian writer except St Augustine. cf: Asian Civilisations Museum Singapore for a similar Jesuit plaque depicting St Jerome painted in bright polychrome (no. 2011 - 01507) IVORY ACT 2018: A certificate for a pre-1918 item of outstandingly high artistic, cultural or historical value. A RARE ANCIENT BRITISH CELTIC CARVED RED SANDSTONE STATUETTE 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD Depicting a Goddess with long flowing hair wearing a loosely draped tunic her breasts exposed perhaps representing the Deity 'Brigantia', indentation to the top of her head for offerings or libations, with modern display base figure 33cm high, 12cm wide, 12cm deep with base Provenance : Reputedly found in Yorkshire near Hadrian's Wall Ex Private British collection formed in the Early 20th Century Ex Private London collection Literature : Similarities can be seen in a Bronze Female Figurine found in Culver Hole Cave Glamorganshire. Published in Pagan Celtic Britain by Dr Anne Ross pg. 211 The Celtic Yorkshire goddess Brigantia, the 'High One' was the personification of a hegemony of tribes, the Brigantes. Unified under her protection their territory stretched from present day Southern Yorkshire and Lancashire into Southern Scotland. Brigantia was a goddess of a pastoral people to whom flocks and herds were of prime importance, but she also had influence in the sphere of warfare although this was usually by means of magic rather than through physical strength. Celtic belief in the power of the Goddess was very pronounced and they were deeply concerned with her importance in both fertility and maternity. The Celtic goddess was at once- mother, warrior, virgin, witch, conveyor of fertility, of strong sexual appetite, giver of prosperity to the land and protectress of the flocks and herds. More static and archaic than other gods, she remained tied to the land for which she was responsible. The Celts frequently traced their tribal descent back to a divine ancestor and they invoked the goddess Brigantia as wholly theirs, but by the 3rd century AD she appears clad as Roman Minerva and associated with the deity Victory in her role as a war goddess. By that time the Romans and the Celts had assimilated their belief in her control by magical means of the outcome of any battle.
