As with the example held in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Accession number 7622-1861) this is a stucco squeeze (or cast) probably cast from a terracotta or marble. The V&A example retains the architectural setting (and later 16th century base design)of Ferrucci's marble relief in the Palazzo Communale at Solarolo (near Ravenna), which was originally housed in the Rocca of Solarolo.
This example is slightly pared back focusing on the primary image but shares the same composition, scrolling chair arm, fingers placement of her right hand over the standing child's right leg, and broad brushstrokes of clothing design. It lacks the oval medallion or brooch and her head is tilted fractionally less open- closer to an example in terracotta sold Sotheby's London, Old Master Sculpture and Works of Art, 10 th July 2014 lot 174.

The original marble 'Eros di Centocelle' was excavated in Centocelle, on the Via Labicana, not far from Rome, by the Scottish neoclassical painter and archaeologist Gavin Hamilton in 1772. It was found without forearms, legs and genitals (later reattached together with the nose). There were probably wings, lost in the excavation - as holes in the back of the original suggest. Briefly at the Louvre between 1797 and 1800 the figure is now in Rome in the Pius-Clementin Museum, Galleria delle Statue, 250.

Fonderia Chiurazzi was originally established in the 19th century by Pietro Masulli, the Neapolitan artist, sculptor, businessman and fondeur who was one of the pioneers of copying Ancient works of art, often in the local museums, to sell to visitors and to the international markets. He founded an art school in the Reale Ospizio dell' Albergo dei Poveri in Naples and after his death his pupil Gennaro Chiurazzi re-established the disbanded foundry under a new name and in a new location in 1870.

André-Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814) was one of the foremost French bronziers of the pre and post Revolution period. A highly successful businessman and gifted artist he also found success as a poet and playwright.
In common with his contemporary Claude Galle, Ravrio sold bronzes by fondeurs as well as his own and supplied the leading ébénistes, notably Georges Jacob, Guillaume Beneman and his uncle Jean-Henri Riesener. Although Ravrio enjoyed success during Louis XVI's reign he went on to achieve greater fame under Napoleon Bonaparte. He took part in the first Exposition de l'Industrie in Paris in 1803 and won a silver medal in 1806. In the same year he supplied a number of bronze furnishings for the Empress Joséphine's apartments in the Tuileries and in 1810 was appointed to bronzier to the Emperor.
Condition Report:
With wear and rubbing to patina of exposed areas of anatomy from handling, age etc. Base with areas of dirt build up around feet, small marks and old polish deposits. Slight twist to left arm at cast junction point and inset wedge to upper right arm possibly strengthening joint and added later (?) small scuffs to hands and edges of base. The *Comptoir Français d'Art* was a French art foundry that specialized in high-quality bronze casting during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Operating in a period of artistic flourishing, the foundry contributed significantly to the production of bronze sculptures, particularly in the Animaliers, Art Nouveau and Art Deco genres. It collaborated with various artists, sculptors, and designers, providing them with the technical expertise needed to bring their visions to life.
Although it did not achieve the same level of fame as larger foundries like Barbedienne or Susse Frères, *Comptoir Français d'Art* played an important role in French sculptural production. Today, bronzes bearing the foundry's mark remain valuable to collectors and historians interested in the development of French decorative arts and sculpture.
In an advert from the late 1920s titled "LES PLUS BEAUX ANIMAUX" the foundry noted "Exclusivite des oeuvres de H Peyrol I Bonheur" and illustrated this model after Bonheur, retitled as "Gladiateur"- perhaps the original name of the stallion the Bonheur had captured in bronze.

The gilt bronze and metal bombé case with a slightly adapted lid inlaid with simulated moss agate panels within a running border of stylised interlaced ovals, the body with symmetrically matched panels of agate within ormolu borders, each corner mounted with a winged cherub head on volutes on mask headed scrolls, the front decorated in gilt with a group of ram heads and musical instruments, the lid and two sides fitted with handles in the form of acanthus scrolls, on four cast zoomorphic feet modelled as elephants, internal lip marked either C3 or S3

This casket is related to a number of gilt-metal Nécessaires, caskets and timepieces which share the characteristics of an upright bombe shape, rococo decoration and agate panels made by the English master clockmaker James Cox.
James Cox (1723-1800) was a London goldsmith, jeweller, and clockmaker who produced luxurious ornate clocks and objet d'art and sold them to China, India, Russia as well as in London. In 1766 the English East India Company commissioned two 'chariot clocks' intended as gifts to the Qianlong emperor. In 1795 the Dutch embassy to China included in its presents to the emperor two automaton clocks bought in Canton, which were made in part by James Cox. Alongside the Barbot family he specialised in cabinets, ornate and intricate necessaires, snuffboxes and caskets with agate and hardstone panels held in gold or gilt metal cage-work such as this example. Goodison however recounts how Matthew Boulton noted in his dairy of 1769: " Mr. Charles Magniac, No 1 Crown Court, Old Change, Near St. Pauls, is a fine designer, modeller and chaser; he designs all for Cox in Shoe Lane " and that Boulton suspected Magniac to be responsible for most, if not all, of the ormolu mountings for Cox's works .
Today his work can be seen in in a number of major collections including the Royal Collection, London, the Palace Museum, Beijing and his larger automata including the life-size Peacock automaton in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg and the Silver Swan automaton in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle.

The plaster model for Fremiet's rare work of 'Centaure et Ours' was exhibited at the Salon of 1861 (no.3356) and again in 1863 (no.2370), but was broken during the war of 1870. A bronze version was exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 (no.925). Fremiet returned to the subject in 1898 when he was commissioned by the Sevres manufactory for a second version. This depicted a slightly smaller bear that has been entirely lifted off the ground by the centaur, who holds it in a vice-like grip around the neck. A comparable example is held in the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth US, purchased through the Phyllis and Bertram Geller 1937 Memorial Fund (S.964.56).

Dog is loosely glued/fixed to base- has three later screws to three paws that drop into base. Other paw with vacant hole. Surface is dirty and with some rubbing to patina of exposed areas such as nose, tips of ears, rear haunches, and around rear left leg. Base again dirty, broken and repaired and with nibbles and small chips to edges and corners with larger chip visible to underside of one corner

Weekes was raised in Canterbury as the son of a banker's clerk, but his was artistic inclinations were quickly recognized and he was sent to study at the Royal Academy. His talent was widely recognised and he became the lead modeler in the studio of Sir Francis Chantrey, and a personal favourite of the English sculptor. Chantrey went so far as to request Weekes complete his unfinished works after his death and bequeathed him £1,000 to start his own studio. His popularity grew - notably through grand achievements such as sculpting a bust for the newly throned Queen Victoria and exhibiting at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851.

Born in Padua in 1793, Rinaldo Rinaldi studied at the Academy of Arts in Venice under the direction of Pietrò Zandomeneghi (d.1866) and in 1812 went on to study under Canova, before becoming an academician of San Luca in 1830. A portraitist and monument sculptor, Rinaldi received many public commissions, including figures of Adonis and Titian for the vestibule of the Academy of Venice. He exhibited regularly in Rome and at the Turin exhibition of 1854.

Both with fairly dirty surface with some engrained surface dirt, scattered natural inclusions throughout to both- some darker- some small holes (agriculture face notably) and sections of veining (notably to left elbow agriculture)
Agriculture- generally good- some mild nibbles and losses (peak of hat, grape section, tip of billhook, larger inclusion loss to shovel blade) old crack to right ankle but this may be from natural flaws
Seafaring- under UV the whole showing signs of later applied wash- front of plinth and neck restored with thin crack still visible to neck and larger gap to base under natural light- wash possibly hiding further work including hands, nose rubbed and worn and with further small areas of contact loss

After Dalou's death, the executors of his will commissioned the Parisian firm of A. A. Hébrard to cast bronzes from plasters and terracotta studies found in the sculptor's studio. These were cast in limited numbers usually up to ten, the plasters were then donated to the Petit Palais in 1905. This edition of 10 was cast c.1902-1905. One cast is held in the Gulbenkian Museum Lisbon Plaster in Petit Palais, Paris, acquired in 1905.
This study of a seated child is a motif from Dalou's Monument to the Grandchildren of Queen Victoria. This monument was commissioned by Victoria's daughter, Princess Louise and the finished terracotta was placed in a niche of the Royal Chapel in Windsor Castle in 1878. This intensely private monument was not publicly exhibited before its installation.

Ferdinand Pautrot was born in Poitiers and his first recorded exhibition at the Salon in Paris was in 1861 with three entries. He continued to exhibit at the Salon until 1870 with work consisting mostly of hunting dogs, birds, horses, and wild animals. This well detailed dog was conceived by the artist as one of a pendant pair, the other dog a pointer holding a hare.
