MANNER OF THE WORKSHOP OF SEVERO CALZETTA DE RAVENNA, 17TH CENTURY

bronze 17cm high, 22cm high overall, base 16cm wide
It is likely that this equestrian figure, derived from the over life-size equestrian bronze on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, this would originally have had a base with a shell inkwell set on it. Typical of bronzes produced by the da Ravenna workshop, such a piece would demonstrate the owner's erudition as well as being a domestic functional piece with use as inkwell and candle holder.

AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A GRAND TOUR CARVED ALABASTER FIGURAL GROUP OF EROS AND PSYCHE 19TH CENTURY 35cm high, the base 12.5cm wide, 11cm deep
Also known as "Cupid and Psyche", the original Roman statue was discovered in the estate of the Canonico Panicale on the Aventine Hill in February 1749. It was ceded to the French under the terms of the Treaty of Tolentino in 1797 and was transported to Paris in 1798 in a triumphal procession. It was returned to the Capitoline Museum in 1816. The instant example is thought to date to the late 18th or early 19th century.

Matthew Boulton's inventory of stock in 1782 lists '1 small figure of Minerva". (cf. Nicholas Goodison, Ormolu: the Work of Mathew Boulton, 1974, p. 276).
An example, attributed to Matthew Boulton, was sold by
Sotheby's New York, NY, November 19, 1993 lot 13.
This current lot may be the same example that was sold at Christie's on 16 November 89 - which was noted to have a base "inscribed Minerva".

Of note and comparison is a marble relief panel lot 16 sold at Sotheby's from the Property from the Collection of the late Sir Howard Hodgkin CH CBE on 20 May 2020 and catalogued as "Southern Netherlandish, 18th Century, Relief With A Goddess, white marble" which shows the same handling of detail to mouth, head position and treatment of eyes (hammer £2,500).

This unusual pose would seem to indicate that originally this figure may have formed part of a larger table composition- perhaps with Erymanthian boar below. The closest comparison might seem to be the late 16th/early 17th century figure in the V&A museum ascribed possibly to "the Ciechanowiecki Master, Italy" (Accession number A.93-1956, given by Dr. W. L. Hildburgh, F. S. A., 1956).

A BRONZE MODEL OF A DOG NUREMBERG, LATE 16TH CENTURY Modelled seated, turning, tongue lolling 9cm high, base 10cm wide This known model is similar in facture to an example in the Cleveland Museum of Art discussed at length by Wixom. The offered bronze is highly finished with great attention to detail. It is likely to belong to the "second group" identified by Wixom which were "modelled with lavish care", examples of which can be seen in Nuremberg, Munich and Vienna (Von Rho Collection). Hans Weihrauch assigns this second type to the Durer revival in Numemberg around 1600. See:

AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A PAIR OF BRONZE FIGURES OF THE FURIETTI CENTAURS
ITALIAN, 19TH CENTURY
Modelled after the Righetti model without supporting tree trunks, on polished black marble bases
29cm and 33cm high overall, the bases 24.5cm x 10cm
The original Centaurs were discovered during excavations (conducted by Monsignor Furietti) at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli on the outskirts of Rome in 1736. They were acquired by Pope Clement XIII from Furietti's heirs and placed in the Capitoline Museum. Bronze reproductions were made by famous 18th century bronze foundries such as those established by Righetti and Zofolli to cater for demand from Grand Tourists. Their decorative appeal to the Georgians was enhanced by the fact that they were a classical, symmetrical pair.
