Based on the Roman original in the Prado. The roman torso of a faun, which is the basis of this statue, was discovered in 1676 during the construction of the road adjoining the Chiesa Nuova. It was acquired by the Queen of Sweden and subsequently restored by Ercole Ferrata. A copy was made for Versailles in 1686.

A VENETIAN BRONZE MODEL OF A SOLDIER IN THE MANNER OF ASPETTI, 17TH CENTURY Traces of gilding, alabaster and marble base, remnants of inked label to base illegible 22.5cm high, the base 7.5cm square This is one of a group of bronzes which were acquired from the same collection. All were reputedly acquired from the dealer J. Richards of Nottingham in the early years of the 20th century. Several examples bore labels, or part labels to that effect. The label on this example matches the others. J. Richards was a dealer in "Antiques, curiosities and objects of art" at 77 Hounds Street, Nottingham between 1890-1915. He published catalogues of his stock and was one of the first dealers to do so. One of his catalogues was sold by Lyon & Turnbull 2nd September 2015.

CIRCLE OF MASSIMILIANO SOLDANI BENZI (ITALIAN 1656-1740), A TERRACOTTA FIGURE CRISTO MORTO

the figure 14cm high, 64.5cm long, 29cm deep, the base 78.5 x 39.5cm
This powerful representation of the recumbent Cristo Morto (Dead Christ) has been associated with the 18th century Florentine sculptor, Massimiliano Soldani Benzi (1656-1740). Soldani gained an international reputation across Europe due to the dissemination of his bronze casts of copies after the Antique, as well as his own mythological and religious compositions. This was achieved by the direct patronage of important foreign clients, for example Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein and the Duke of Marlborough, and by Soldani's personal marketing of his works through agents throughout Europe, such as Giovanni Giacomo Zamboni in London.

Condition Report:
Under strong light there is colour variance throughout the surface. Examination of the underside reveals that the void beneath has been filled- possibly for stabilisation of the whole. This filled void has later large metal screws inserted for stable connection with later base- which has worm.
The figure appears to have gone various stages of restoration and remedial work- including small and more major repairs. The majority of this work is not visible under UV where the glazes obscure. From the colour variances and slight visible cracks the piece would seem to have possibly been in at least several pieces, and with further remedial work executed to raised areas such as legs, nose, hands and feet.
