It is recorded that between 1771 and 1775, a number of carved lacquer 'treasure' boxes were produced by order of the Emperor, with inscribed names and imperial reign marks; see Lin Mun-lee, Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colors : Treasured Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, p.117. The dragon cover belongs to a group of deeply carved cinnabar lacquer boxes and covers which project a three-dimensional effect and a sense of movement through precise knifework and expert execution; see a related circular box carved on both cover and underside with three mythical beasts amidst waves, Qianlong, and compare also the dragon amidst waves on a square box and cover, Qianlong, both from the Qing Court collection, illustrated in Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2006, pls. 9 and 15; see also a rectangular 'three dragon' box and cover, Qianlong mark and period, illustrated by Lin Mun-lee, ibid., pl.132.
A very similar cinnabar lacquer box and cover, Qianlong mark and period, with identical 'longwen baohe' mark, possibly the pair to the present lot, sold at Sotheby's London, 16th May 2007, lot 75; another similar lacquer box and cover, but with a Qianlong and yunlong baohe mark and period, was sold at Christie's Paris, 15th June 2004, lot 123.

A Chinese carved bamboo 'horse' brush rest, Kangxi, the naturally curving upper surface inscribed and signed Shi An above a roundel carved in shallow relief with a single horse in a rocky landscape beneath over-hanging pine branches, 23.8cm long.

A Chinese Imperial hardstone inlaid zitan and huanghuali 'Longevity' table screen, Qing Dynasty, the silk screen depicting birds flying amidst peony blossoms and foliage, the inlaid borders made of white jade, lapis lazuli, soapstone, amber, turquoise, and quartz on the huanghuali back panel, on top of the screen inlaid in white jade with wan shou wu jiang characters, all set in a zitan frame carved with key-fret symbols, carved zitan stand, approximately 82cm high x 72cm wide

Gifted by repute from Empress Cixi to Anne Evelind Barnes (1894-1997), wife of Ernest Talbot Barnes (circa 1890-1984), an employee of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in the 1920's, then
Martyn Harry St Clair Barnes (1924-1998) and by family descent
This striking screen has been executed with meticulous detail and great skill in trompe l'oeil inlaid onto a flat surface. The production of screens of this type required the cooperation of various Palace workshops, where skilled craftsmen paid particular attention to recreating elements of the design in their specialised medium. The table screen is believed to have been displayed on the Qingyan Boat in the Summer Palace and was then, by repute, gifted by Empress Cixi to Anne Evelind Barnes (née Knox) (1894-1997) for her endeavours in helping to set up the soup kitchens in Tianjin. See Lot 138 (following lot) for the Barnes Family album of Chinese photographs, including the view of the Qingyan Boat and the family image showing Anne Evelind Barnes in one of the soup kitchens she set up in Tianjin.

Active as a painter between 1880 and 1910, Zhou Peichun had a studio in Beijing, where he catered to mostly Western customers, painting portraits of trades, punishments, and characters that one can meet on the streets of the capital. He is thought to also have had a brief foray in Guangzhou's Shisanhang, before returning to Beijing.

A Chinese celadon jade hoof-shaped ornament, Neolithic period, Longshan culture (circa 3000 - 1900 BC), with wood stand
Provenance:
Private collection, previously purchased from Hong Kong Antique Fair in 1970
This distinct shape this jade ornament has been labeled 'horse hoof' or mati by Chinese archaeologists working on Hongshan cultural sites in Liaoning and northern Hebei provinces. The working of the jade tends to be thinner at the upper walls of these ornaments, which are now thought to be some kind of hair ornament. One of these ornaments from a tomb in Liaoning, which like the present example has a hole drilled on either side above the lower edge, is illustrated by Xiaoneng Yang, ed., in The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology: Celebrated Discoveries from the People's Republic of China, National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1999, pp. 83-4, no. 11. See a similar one sold at Christie's New York, 21 March 2025, Lot 1001.

A large and finely carved Chinese pale celadon jade rhyton, gong, 17th-18th century, carved with zoomorphic features including a bifurcated tail, the sides decorated with four lively chilong dragons in high relief and taotie masks and archaistic scroll in low relief, 21.5cm high

Archaistic jade rhytons of this type have their antecedents in jade rhytons of Han dynasty date, such as the example from the Han dynasty tomb of the King of Nanyue, illustrated by J. Rawson in Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, British Museum, 1995, p. 70, fig. 61. By the Song and Ming dynasties, and into the Qing dynasty, this shape was modified and the sides were carved with bands of decoration inspired by that found on bronzes and jades of Eastern Zhou dynasty, as well as Han dynasty, date, often with the addition of chilong carved in high relief. See a similar example sold at Christie's New York, 23 September 2022, Lot733.
