θ Georgian Irish actress & socialite.- Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. This present Wednesday, being the 18th of February, will be presented a Comedy call'd The Constant Couple; or a trip to the Jubilee. Sir Harry Wildair by Mrs. Woffington , printed playbill, folds, some fraying to edges, little spotting, lightly browned, 250 x 180mm., no printer, [1756]. ⁂ Margaret [Peg] Woffington (1720-1760), was an Irish actress and socialite. It was her 'breeches role' as Sir Harry Wildair in The Constant Couple that 'thrust her into the limelight', as the role had up until then been associated with the great Robert Wilks. In 1749 she became the first female member of a Beefsteak Club founded by the theatre manager and director John Rich, and went on to be its first female President the following year (members included Garrick and Hogarth).

Schmied (François-Louis) Illustrations for Victor Bérard's translation of 'L'Odyssée ' , 96 pochoir prints (of 98) on vellum, heightened in gold and silver, all signed 'F.L.S' or 'F. L. Schmied', images of various sizes, including portrait format approx. 205 x 130 mm (8 x 5 1/8 in), landscape format 144 x 70 mm (5 5/8 x 2 3/4 in), and one circular portrait with title 131 x 161 mm (5 1/4 x 6 1/4 in), each sheet approx. 240 x 170 mm (9 1/2 x 6 3/4 in), all neatly presented in uniform mounts, tissue guards, colours bright and vivid, all loose, unframed, [ circa 1930] Provenance: Collection of the late Christopher White ⁂ These vibrant illustrations were created by François-Louis Schmied (1873–1941) for Victor Bérard’s translation of Homer’s Odyssey . Produced in a limited edition for the Bibliophiles de l’Automobile Club de France, the work was printed entirely on vellum. However, due to its inherent cost, not all planned copies were completed. This particular suite lacks the customary blue and gold borders as well as the accompanying text leaves, suggesting it may never have been part of a bound volume.

θ Gill (Eric) An album of c.120 wood-engravings on various hand-made papers, comprising much of Gill's output whilst at Ditchling , 13 signed or initialled by the artist, 4 printed in gold on black, 3 with hand-colouring, most tipped onto album leaves, original half morocco with "Eric Gill" lettered on spine, lower cover detached, rubbing and wear to extremities, 4to , 1908-24. ⁂ A superb album, that encompasses Gill's first wood-engraving for Ditchling (Physick 1, his first recorded wood-engraving, this in two states) and his last (271). Highlights include: an impressions of Crucifix, Chalice and Host (45) and Crucifix (89) in gold on black paper; an example of St. George and the Dragon (90) initialed and hand-coloured; signed examples of Ascension (140), Madonna and Child (154), Madonna and Child with base (155), Nude Crucifix (192) and The Plait (195); an example of Clare (196) with hand-colouring; and examples of rare prints St. Sebastian (200), Crucifix, robed (258), Madonna and Child (268), no copies of which were in the artist's personal file. θ Gill (Eric) Wood-Engravings..., number IV of 50 copies from an edition limited to 150, title and one plate printed in red and black, 32 woodcut or wood-engraved plates by Eric Gill , bookplate of Andrew & Mary Henderson Bishop to front pastedown, original cream linen, spotted, uncut, blue dust-jacket with woodcut illustration and lettering in black, spine a little sunned, light creasing to head, an excellent example, [Gill 410; Taylor & Sewell A129a], 4to, Ditchling, S. Dominic's Press, 1924 . ⁂ Scarce Gill item, particularly in the dust-jacket, this one of the copies numbered by hand on the leaf following the title. Gill moved away from Ditchling to Capel-y-Ffin in Wales, and wanted to take the engraved woodblocks with him as his personal property. Pepler claimed they belonged to the St.Dominic's lay order and press and so kept them, resulting in Gill 's refusal to speak to Pepler again.

Castelli (1578-1643) was Galileo's closest disciple and a major proponent and teacher of Galilean thought. On Galileo's recommendation he became professor of mathematics at the University of Pisa. His students included Bonaventura Cavalieri, Alfonso Borelli and Evangelista Torricelli. It was to Castelli that Galileo wrote on Dec. 21, 1613 arguing that Scripture is an infallible guide to salvation, but it is often silent on matters of science, for which Nature must be our guide. This was the beginning of "the Galileo affair," the twenty-year saga that culminated in Galileo's trial for heresy in 1633.

In 1845 Captain Warre was sent by the British government to the Oregon Territory, at the height of the dispute with the United States over its ownership, to scout out the country in case British troops were brought into Oregon. He travelled overland across Canada to the Pacific North west, visiting present-day Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. By the time he returned the political crisis had been resolved. Warre , an accomplished artist, executed these illustrations on the spot, and published them upon his return to London." (Best of the West, 105)
