Includes several very early suggestions for the use of medical cannabis ('hempsede') - "If a man haue a sounding or piping in his eares / the same cometh somtyme of a hote slymy fylthynesse / or of a hote slymy moystnesse. He that is so diseased / ought to take pilles de iera picra / & then put oyle of Hempsede warme into his eares / mixt wt a litle vinegre / after yt let him leape vpon hys one legge / vpon that syde / where the disease is / than let hym bowe doune ye eare of that syde / if happely any moysture or fylth would issue out." θ Puritanism.- Vestments controversy.- Briefe Examination for the Tyme (A), of a certaine declaration, lately put in print in the name and defence of certaine Ministers in London, refusyng to weare the apparell prescribed by the lawes and orders of the Realme, first edition, black letter, woodcut initials, title a little soiled with margins frayed and small portion of restoration at gutter, a few ff. closely shaved, affecting some text and headlines, D1-D4 with restoration and repair to upper corner and fore-margin with some loss to text, light foxing, extensive notes to rear endpapers, ink inscription in an old hand to 2*2 "The solicitours of these orders were bluddy persecutours", bookplate, 19th century roan, spotted, rubbing to extremities, [STC 10387], small 4to, [In Powles Churchyarde by Richarde Iugge, printer to the Queenes Maiestie], [1566]. ⁂ Rare. The vestments controversy was ostensibly concerning clerical dress but grew to encompass the notion of nonconformity in church practices. The debate reached a peak in 1566 with the publication of Robert Crowley's 'A Briefe Discourse Against the Outwarde Apparel of the Popishe Church' to which this is a response commissioned by (and sometimes attributed to) Archbishop Matthew Parker. The Elements of Geometrie, first edition in English of the first complete translation , translated by Sir Henry Billingsley, preface by John Dee, title within fine woodcut border depicting Ptolemy and Strabo, amongst others, folding letter-press table (torn and repaired, without loss), numerous woodcut diagrams including 37 diagrams on 28 pp. with one or more printed overslips , woodcut portrait of John Day above colophon, woodcut historiated or decorative initials and tail-pieces, lacking final blank, title and final 2ff. with neat restorations to blank outer corners, occasional dampstaining, mostly marginal, 2D2 with burn hole to head, 2V2&3 with small patch of soiling partially obscuring text, small rust hold to 2D1, small paper flaws to 2T2&5 with some minor loss to text, modern antique-style calf with original covers laid down, [STC 10560; cf. PMM 25], by John Daye, [1570]. ⁂ First edition of the first major science book in English . The clear and precise nature of the text coupled with the numerous illustrations ensured this work's continued popularity as a scientific textbook up to the present day. In addition the use of printed slips here (originally printed as six bifolia bound in at the end) mean that this work can lay claim to being the first illustrated popup work in the English language. John Dee's preface is considered by many to be his most important published work. It outlines the practical applications of Euclid's work, lays the foundations for later experimental science and hints at the use of magic and the supernatural in conjunction with the natural. In addition, Dee also contributed further theorems and annotations.

"Educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, Whittingham became a Protestant and Reformed Churchman; as such, it was necessary to flee England when Mary I ascended the throne and initiated her policies of hostility and persecutions against Reformed Churchmen. By 1554, Whittingham made his way to Frankfurt, Germany, where he joined a group of Protestant exiles from Mary's reign. There, he met John Knox and became a supporter of Reformed Theology, a force that would inform and shape later Elizabethan divines. (This would later be pushed back by Laudian forces of anti-Calvinism in the 17th century.) He also married the sister of John Calvin. He took over Knox's role as established, ordained and recognised minister to the English congregation of exiles in Geneva. In Geneva, he started the work for which he is best remembered, a Bible translation that came to be known as the Geneva Bible. In 1560, Whittingham returned to England, and was made Dean of Durham in 1563, an office he held at his death in 1579." (DNB)

⁂ The rare first English edition which "is much less common than the French or Italian versions. The plates in this version are woodcuts, not the copper engravings which were produced for the first edition (Lyon, 1567). The English edition is dedicated to Sir Phillip Sidney and his father Henry by the editor John Stell. It seems to be the only work by the translator Thomas Washington." While his fishing text is freely adapted from Dame Juliana Berners' Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle (1496), his discourse on hunting and trapping is largely original, and, in Schwerdt's opinion, "the earliest special treatise of its kind."

θ [?Cleaver (Robert)] A Godlie Forme of Householde Government: for the Ordering of Private Families...the severall duties of the Husband towards his Wife; and the Wives dutie towards her Husband...First, gathered by R.C. and now newly perused, amended, and augmented, by John Dod, and Robert Clever, fourth edition, woodcut head-pieces and initials, 18thC ink signature of Joseph Lonthion in several places and some other signatures, rather soiled and stained particularly title, damp-staining to fore-edge throughout causing some fraying and slight loss to side-notes, contemporary vellum, yapp edges (a little worn), rubbed and stained, lacking ties, recased, new endpapers, [STC 5385.5], 8vo, for Thomas Man, and George Norton, 1610. ⁂ Rare; ESTC lists only 2 copies of this edition (Trinity College Dublin and Yorkshire County Library) and very few of other editions. It was first published in 1598 and is variously attributed to Roger Carr, John Deacon and Robert Caudry.

θ Wickedness.- Knight (William) A Concordance Axiomaticall, Containing a Survey of Theologicall Propositions: With their Reasons and uses in holie Scripture..., first and only edition, text in 3 columns, woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces, lacking final blank, small ink shelf-mark to foot of a2, final f. with small hole affecting few letters, spotting to title and very occasionally elsewhere, water-stain to head throughout but generally small and light, modern half calf, [STC 15049], folio, for John Bill, 1610. ⁂ Only edition of this rare theological treatise in alphabetical order on hundreds of core beliefs and fundamental statements of the Christian faith related to passages of the Bible by their Reason and Use, as the middle columns of each page read. The entries on Jews (over 6pp.) and the Wicked (32pp.) reveal the author's sympathies for the Puritans. Women hardly cover two pages but tend to be of a reproving character. This concordance of axioms was of course intended to be used by ministers in preparing their sermons, and gives the axioms, or doctrines, in plain vernacular phrases.

⁂ First collected edition of Spenser's works, second (?1615) issue with the title to the second part of the Faerie Queene dated 1612 and the colophon "16012" [sic]. With the Prosopopoia. Or Mo the r Hubberds Tale consisting of a single ga the ring A of 8 leaves and dated 1613 on the title, not found in the first issue.
Provenance: "G.W. & B. Frere , E dono Johannis Frere vicesimo & nono die Januarii ad 1789" (gift inscription to front free endpaper, ownership name "Geo: Frere" also to head of general title).

θ Ireland.- Davies (Sir John) A Discoverie of the True Causes why Ireland was never entirely Subdued...untill the Beginning of his Maiesties happie Raigne, first edition, with initial leaf blank except for signature 'A', with later ink inscription to verso, woodcut device and decoration on title, dedication leaf within typographic borders, corner of O4 torn away with slight loss to ruled border, tear and printing flaw to Y1, V2 and Bb4 with small holes slightly affecting text, some water-staining, occasional slight worming at inner margin, not affecting text, later calf, gilt, extremities bit worn, upper joint split but covers holding firm, [STC 6348], small 4to, for John Jaggard, 1612. ⁂ Important work on Anglo-Irish relations. Davies (1570-1652) was an eminent poet, lawyer and political writer. In 1603 he was sent to Ireland as solicitor-general and soon was promoted to Attorney-general and one of the justices of assizes. This work was the result of a judicial circuit round Ireland and on his return to England he wrote an account to the King. He was appointed Lord Chief Justice of England but died shortly afterwards. Snodham printed 2A-2Y; Okes printed the rest (STC). "The examination of a chyrurgion .. by S[tephen]. H[obbes]." has separate dated title-page; "A particular practise of phisicke" (caption title) begins new pagination on 2A1. The first edition appeared in 1609.

Field] for Edward Blount, 1613. ⁂ In 1609 Dallington presented Prince Henry with a manuscript ' Aphorismes civill and militarie' , comprising pieces selected from the Italian historian Guicciardini. Following the prince's death in 1612 Dallington reworked these, which were published in 1613 with a new dedication to Prince Charles, later King Charles I.
