A LIMOGES GRISAILLE PAINTED ENAMEL PLATE WORKSHOP OF PIERRE REYMOND, 16TH CENTURY "Jason and Medea conversing in a forest", plate 8 from The Legend of the Golden Fleece, the borders with rims with interlinked scrolls and chariots interspersed with frolicking putti and satyrs, both backs painted with profile portraits surrounded with a band of fruit and foliate scrollwork grisaille and partially gilt painted enamel on copper, monogrammed 'PR' and numbered '8' 20cm diameter Provenance: Private Collection. The inventory for the collection records that this item came from the "Estate of J Mendelson" but there are no recorded dates of acquisition or sale/purchase details and the vendor is unable to provide further information. This plate depicts Jason and Medea conversing in a forest taken from engravings by René Boyvin after drawings by Léonard Thiry for the 1563 publication of the Book of the Conquest of the Golden Fleece. Condition Report: Provenance: Private Collection. The inventory for the collection records that this item came from the "Estate of J Mendelson" but there are no recorded dates of acquisition or sale/purchase details. With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning but with losses, knocks and damages notably to front raised edges from clumsy handling or accidental contacts. Edge frits and small knocks- largest damages to around 11 o'clock with copper structure visible. Small spur/firing holes to reverse- some thin cracks visible and small scattered areas of loss- small rubbing to base and to painted decoration throughout Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report.
