A GEORGE III EMBOSSED PAPER BIRD PICTURE
ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM HAYES (1729-1799), LATE 18TH CENTURY
Depicting a grey heron (Ardea cinerea) by reeds and river, basso relievo with hand tinting, glass eye, later mounted in a glazed giltwood frame with Cambridge blue and gilt mount, reverse with hand inscribed label "Sacher" and further faintly inscribed in pencil "Centre left hand side"
the image approximately 49 x 29cm, the frame 63 x 42.5cm
William Hayes was an ornithologist and artist who in 1771 published a volume containing forty hand-coloured engravings "A Natural History of British Birds etc.". In the late 1780s, he was employed at Osterley, recording the exotic birds in the Child's 'menagerie'. This resulted in the publication between 1794 and 1799 of his "Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds with their Descriptions". Drawing on first-hand experience he produced a series of basso relievo bird pictures such as this- much in the manner of his Irish contemporary Samuel Dixon. The present bird picture incorporates a glass eye - a feature favoured by Hayes.

Provenance:
Possibly purchased from O.F. Wilson Antiques in the 1970s. Jack Wilson the owner of the antique shop at the time was a very close friend of the vendor's mother.
It is likely that this a selected section that Spence took from his own large figural group of Venus and Cupid ( please see the example in The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Henry P. McIlhenny Collection in memory of Frances P. McIlhenny, 198, Accession Number: 1986-26-268). The completed work Venus and Cupid was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1856, which may suggest that this present lot formed part of the artist's working through his full length composition.
Condition Report:
With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Stone with natural inclusions scattered throughout and mostly visible as smaller dark spots, notably to décolletage. Some losses and indentations to the true right breast which are probably inclusions that have lifted from the surface, similar small holes are visible to the right side of her chin, both cheeks, centre of tiara, side and back of neck and scattered throughout. Small chips visible mostly to margins and extremities, notable to true left shoulder, tip of tiara, right shoulder and along the reverse. Dirt to the surface of shoulders, chest and hair. Slight orange staining to true right top of head.
Has two pins uniting with socle base but slightly loose on socle

With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The whole with surface dirt ingrained notably to recesses. With colour variance to patina resulting in a paler colour notably to front and raised elements of reverse. Both calves with what appears to be remnants of old glue or tape residue which has partially removed existing patina, bases with historic losses notably around edges and corners.

The original marble version of this work was first recorded in collection of Grand Duke of Tuscany, Florence 1665 and is now in the Uffizi, Florence. Several other versions were discovered, and it became widely copied throughout the Grand Tour most notably by Duchemin. The unusual base and casting suggests that this may be by one of the early 19th century London foundries.

Heinrich Imhof was one of many sculptors who set up a studio in Rome in the early to mid-19th century to craft work for the wealthy visiting Grand Tourists. Few examples of his work have appeared at auction with only several larger mythological or Christian figural sculptures known. Examples of his portrait busts have appeared but unlike other artists he didn't inscribe the socle or reverse with the sitter's details and the people he portrayed are mostly unknown as with this example. From the high raised hairline and moustache, it is possible that the subject is probably Austrian, German, or Swiss. Ludwig I (King of Bavaria) seems to have shared certain facial similarities and employed the artist at exactly this time.
Condition Report:
With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Stone with natural inclusions scattered throughout and mostly visible as smaller dark spots, including but not limited to forehead and sternum. Small rubbing and wear to surface, notable to front of hair, true left eyebrow, true right side of moustache and to margins of the whole. The nose with slight vertical flaws. Slight diagonal natural stone flaw visible throughout top back of head. Small scuffs and scratches notably to back of neck. Probably previously formally mortared to a different base and with losses notably to reverse of stem from detachment with that base. Current base a good match but slight size and position variance. Inside of his true right shoulder with scored hatching but also with what may be partially inscribed initials - "LG"? 'E.M' or 'E.W'?? - small symbol above second letter?

As with the example held in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Accession number 7622-1861) this is a stucco squeeze (or cast) probably cast from a terracotta or marble. The V&A example retains the architectural setting (and later 16th century base design)of Ferrucci's marble relief in the Palazzo Communale at Solarolo (near Ravenna), which was originally housed in the Rocca of Solarolo.
This example is slightly pared back focusing on the primary image but shares the same composition, scrolling chair arm, fingers placement of her right hand over the standing child's right leg, and broad brushstrokes of clothing design. It lacks the oval medallion or brooch and her head is tilted fractionally less open- closer to an example in terracotta sold Sotheby's London, Old Master Sculpture and Works of Art, 10 th July 2014 lot 174.
Condition Report:
The whole with characteristic wear, losses and retouching as is typical for an object of this period and size. Under natural light diagonal crack running from middle of lower margin of plaque up through her right hand and across mid body of child. Old inset damage and losses to wooden frame and signs of later strengthening to painted details. Under UV light the majority of the painted surface showing signs of later remedial retouching. All three carved elements reattached.

Condition Report:
The bronzes with wear commensurate with age and handling. Paler patination to raised extremities, notably tops and details of heads. Front leg and rear of spine and tail. Traces of what appear to be original gilding to the saddle cloth and with dirt to surface which has turned crusty to recesses. Almost certainly remounted on bases, both of which show restorations of varying ages more conspicuously under UV.

Isabel Nicholas, later Rawsthorne (1912-1992) was an artist and the biological mother of Epstein's son Jackie. As a young art student she modelled for Epstein who produced two portraits of her in 1932. She went on to become a painter and designed two ballets. She married three times, first to the political journalist Sefton Delmer and then to the composers Constant Lambert and Alan Rawsthorne. Her personality and looks appealed to a variety of artists and she went on to be portrayed by Picasso, André Derain, Francis Bacon and Alberto Giacometti the latter describing her as " a tigress. No. More like a panther, a real devourer of men".
A very similar example of this work measuring 70.6cm high is held in the New Art Gallery Walsall, acquired from the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
