A FINE WILLIAM & MARY OLIVEWOOD OYSTER VENEERED CABINET ON STAND CIRCA 1690 With holly banding and inlay, the doors opening to reveal a fitted interior of drawers around a central cupboard enclosing small drawers, the stand with 'barley twist' supports 165cm high, 109cm wide, 50cm deep Provenance: Aston Court, Shropshire For a closely related cabinet on stand see Sotheby's, Tom Devenish: A Collection of Important English Furniture, 27th April 2008, Lot 1 ($73,000 excl. BP). Condition Report: The marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits, chips and losses. Various old repairs throughout. Lock and escutcheons to main doors appear to be of the period and key present to operate. Handles to interior are likely replacements, handles with remnants of gilding. No alternative marks and holes from previous handles. Steel lock to interior door is late 18th century with associated key to operate. Some fading to the interior. Several legs of the stand appear original, at least one is a very well matched replacement. Rear panels of the cabinet section are possibly 18th or early 19th century replacements. Some old cracks and stains to drawer linings as expected for age. Turned bun feet are later replacements designed in an appearance of which is entirely in keeping. Possible later elements to the stretcher of the stand. Main door hinges are probably 18th century replacements. Drawer of base previously had a Georgian loop handle, now holes have been carefully filled, current handles are in period style. Highly attractive and refined veneers throughout including selected 'oyster' cross grain mouldings. Overall a highly impressive cabinet on stand, made to a very high standard. A QUEEN ANNE BLACK LACQUER AND CHINOISERIE DECORATED CHEST ON STAND CIRCA 1710 157cm high, 95cm wide, 53cm deep Condition Report: Some scratches, marks, and abrasions consistent with age and use. The 'chinoiserie' or 'japanning' has been charmingly executed and had good character. Varying degrees of wear to the surface overall and therefore areas of decoration. The decoration to the exterior side panels largely lost or worn away. The exterior side panels appear to have been re-finished to a degree to resolve the significantly worn/ lost areas of decoration there. This has been done sympathetically and some evidence of the decoration remains albeit faintly (see additional images) Old chips and splits as expected for age. some small losses. Where there have been some old fragmentary losses to the painted/ decorated surface, areas have been sympathetically 'touched in' . This may have taken place in other areas such as drawer linings and rear panels to some degree also but all very symathetically done. Some old repairs. Some evidence of old worm as expected for age. Some worm holes have been sympathetically filled to disguise The handle holes have been neatly plugged from the reverse and the handles re-secured. The handles are likely replacements but have age and are very much of the period style. Only very close inspection reveals them unlikely to be original. The securing fixtures and bolts to each handle from the interior side of the drawers are certainly later. There are only locks to the drawers of the lower section. The locks are of late 18th century date. Lacking keys and drawers are open (not locked) The feet are well and sympathetically executed late 18th century replacements. TWO CIRCULAR ANGLO-GALLIC ENAMEL ROUNDELS 14TH CENTURY OR LATER Each with a fully caparisoned jousting knight; charging left and right and their arms being 'gules a bend d'or' and 'or a lion rampant sable armed gules' respectively; each subject contained in two distinct formal circular borders, one with plain colours; the other floral approximately 8.65cm diameter Saleroom Notice: Please note, the description has been updated and differ from the printed catalogue. " TWO CIRCULAR ANGLO-GALLIC ENAMEL ROUNDELS 14TH CENTURY OR LATER" Provenance: Formerly Lord Carmichael of Skirling collection, sold Sotheby & Co, New Bond Street, 8-10th June 1926, lot 412 and catalogued as; "Two medallions, decorated in champleve enamel, with knights in full armour on horseback, gilt, one medallion has a border of circles, the other a border with scrolling foliage with white flowers...English or French XIV century" (£420) This lot is sold with two reports. The first from Dr Peter Northover, an analysis and metallography report from November 2010 concludes; "The condition of the enamel, both in terms of its inhomogeneity and gas porosity, and its degradation are fully consistent with the proposed 14 th century date. ...We may therefore accept these roundels as historic and authentic". The second from Sr Andrew Shortland, Cranfield University 2010 states: "The roundels have some of the characteristics of early enamels, with the correct range of colouring elements in most cases. However, they do not find an easy compositional fit with the enamels known from the three papers cited. There are three possible interpretations that might account for this: 1.These are early enamels from an unknown workshop which is operating with different recipes to those so far identified; 2. The roundels have been extensively restored sometime ago, mixing early enamels with later restorations containing modern colorants; 3. They are a later production, perhaps from the nineteenth century. The presence of later colouring elements makes option 1 seem the least likely and can probably be ruled out. It is hard to determine purely compositionally whether 2 or 3 is the most possible. It is possible that the application of more sensitive techniques, either by destructive sampling for SEM-WDS or quasi-non-destructive techniques such as LA-ICPMS might reveal more. Similarly, a more comprehensive survey of the roundels to attempt to identify large areas of restoration might distinguish between 2 and 3. However, this present short study is unable to determine with any certainty precisely how much of the enamels dates from the early period and how extensive later additions might be."

A VIENNA (DU PACQUIER) DODECAGONAL PLATE CIRCA 1730 Painted with an exotic bird perched on a tree with flowers issuing from stylised rockwork, enriched in gilding, the reverse with three trailing flower branches 23.5cm wide Provenance: The Counts Morzin, Schloss Hohenelbe, By descent to Count Rudolf Morzin (d. 1881), and by descent to his daughter Countess Aloisia Morzin (m. 1853 Count Hermann Czernin) By descent to The Counts Czernin, Schloss Hohenelbe, until the Second World War, when moved to Schloss Marschendorf Sotheby's, The Rudolf Just Collection , 11th December 2001, Lot 5 Henry Lawrence Collection (1925-2016) and thence by descent Literature: J.F. Hayward, Johann Gregor Herold at Vienna , in Mitteilungsblatt der Keramikfreunde de Schweiz, 29, July 1957, fig. 1 (illustrated pl.1) Condition Report: The plate was originally painted with the marriage arms of Count Bubna-Litic and another in violet on the rim. According to Rudolf Just's notes, a matching 29cm dish originally bore the marriage arms of Countess Morzin. A larger dish of this type is in the collection of A. Weissberger, Prague, exhibited in the 1904 exhibition 'Ausstellung von Alt-Wiener Porzellan', cat. No. 19. Six similarly decorated round plates were in the possession of the Archduke Ludwig Viktor, nos. 292 and 633 the Dorotheum sale catalogue, Vienna 1921. Similar plates are also illustrated in M. Chilton/C. Lehner-Jobst (eds.), Fired by Passion (2009), cat. Nos. 193-195. Examined under UV light and in natural light and no restoration detected. Some historic surface scratches and wear. A CHINESE EXPORT BLACK AND GILT LACQUER BUREAU CABINET PROBABLY CANTON (GUANGZHOU), MID 18TH CENTURY The architectural pediment top with doors enclosing an arrangement of recesses, divisions, drawers and slides, some with pierced fretwork, the serpentine bureau with a fall enclosing stepped and shaped drawers flanking a European inspired shepherd with sheep, reverse painted on mirror in Chinese hand 227.5cm high, 114cm wide, 62cm deep For a related bureau cabinet see Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Accession number W.28:1 to 6-1935, about which is written 'This bureau cabinet was made in Canton (Guangzhou) in southern China, which in the 18th century became the principal - and later the only - trading port at which Europeans were permitted to buy Chinese goods. A formalised commercial system developed there, and Chinese merchants and artisans became increasingly familiar with western tastes and demands. The elaborate design of this cabinet shows how Chinese craftsmen were able to master the complex forms of western furniture, although in its arrangement of compartments and drawers the upper section of the cabinet is more Asian in style. The palette of black and gold is not typically Chinese but imitates Japanese lacquer, which was expensive and difficult to procure in the 18th century. The cabinet features typical lacquer decoration of natural themes such as flowers, animals and landscape scenes, which would have had exotic appeal in the West.' The reverse painted mirror door to the interior of the bureau appears to be a rare feature. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. The finish has overall craquelure and aging with some rubbing to the painted detail and some later painting; the cornice is probably missing a central finial as there is a vacant slot; there are some construction joint cracks and indentations; some warping to the fall and doors so that they do not quite sit flush with the carcass; a later piece of wood to the base; some repairs and later ebonising; there is some evidence of old worm; there is a key but it does not operate any of the later locks; the feet possibly later. A striking and unusual decorative bureau cabinet, with a reverse painted panel to the interior.
