SIR ERNEST ALBERT WATERLOW (BRITISH 1850-1919) CATTLE IN A WINTER LANDSCAPE, SUNSET Oil on canvas 36 x 51cm (14 x 20 in.) Provenance: Verity Waterlow Bequest Offered in the collection are a number of landscapes and animal studies by Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow. Born in London in 1850, he received a formal education in Germany and Switzerland, after which he returned to London to study under the artist Francis Stephen Cary, and later at the Royal Academy Schools in 1872. Inspired by the works of Turner and the French Barbizon School, Waterlow was exposed to both the inheritance of Romanticism and the advances of Realism during the 19 th Century. In the 1890s, he visited Barbizon and Fontainebleau in the Îlle-de-France, where artists such as Theodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet, and Camille Corot painted in the sur le motif method: painting in the landscape to convey its nature most truthfully. Waterlow painted with a keen sensitivity to composition, light, and tone, representing rural life with an unflinching honesty. His contemporary, Martin Hardie, wrote 'his somewhat idyllic landscapes found mainly in southern England, are marked by harmony of colour and quiet refinement.' (Martin Hardie, Watercolour Painting in Britain, Vol. II, London, 1967). His Cattle in A Winter Landscape, Sunset (lot 208) reflects a mastery of tonal values, painting cool blues into the surface of the snow, and heightened oranges into the haze of the setting sun. His animal sketches, in a more intimate manner, showcase his understanding of tonal harmonies in a close composition. His Two Sketches of Geese (lot 212) details white plumage in a dappled light, paying careful attention to the changes in warm and cool tones across the surface of the geese's bodies, as seen in his Galway Gossip , 1887 (Tate, London). During his life, Waterlow received significant recognition, being awarded the Turner Gold Medal by the Royal Academy in 1872, elected president of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1894, knighted in 1902, and elected Royal Academician in 1903. Waterlow's studio sale was held a year after his death at Christie's, however many of his plein air sketches were retained in the family until sold through The Court Gallery, Nether Stoney as part of the Verity Waterlow Bequest.
