Y A GEORGE III GOLD MOUNTED BLUE GLASS SQUARE ETUI POSSIBLY BY THE JAMES GILES WORKSHOP, CIRCA 1760-1770 With scroll chased mounts, chamfered corners, the blue foiled glass surfaces decorated in gilt with chinoiserie river islets, with a hinged lid with white enamel band inscribed with 'Amor Sin/Fin No/Iiene Fin' (from the Spanish ' Endless love has no end'), with gemstone button, containing two glass scent bottles with stopped and screw covers, a shaped patch box with mirror insert, an aide memoire, a pair of tweezers, a folding knife, a pencil, a toothpick and another implement 5.7cm high, 5.5cm wide, 5.5cm deep Provenance The Heber-Percy family. This box item was recorded in a family inventory of 1927 as belonging to Alice Heber-Percy (nee Lockwood), the daughter of Mary Isabella Percy and the Rev. F. V. Lockwood of Canterbury. She married Algernon Heber-Percy (1845-1911) in 1867. Thence by descent The aide memoire has a faint pencil inscription 'when this is read remember poor EP'. EP may refer to Elizabeth Anne Frances Percy (1744 - 1761), the daughter of Elizabeth, Baroness Percy and Hugh, 1st Duke of Northumberland, who died when she was only 17. The white enamel on the box might also suggest a memorial to a child or unmarried young adult. The grandson of Huguenot refugees from Nîmes, James Giles (1718-1780) was one of the most renowned porcelain decorators of the mid 18th century. Having been apprenticed to a jeweller in the 1730s, Giles gained skills in enamelling, gilding, and fine metalwork, and opened his first workshop in Kentish Town, followed by a studio in Berwick Street, Soho, in 1763. In the early 1770s he moved to the fashionable Arts Museum in Cockspur Street, near to the artistic community of St Martins Lane, of which the furniture designer Thomas Chippendale was a member. Giles was renowned for producing an enormous range of exquisitely decorated luxury porcelain and glass, using high quality porcelain blanks, often sourced from the Worcester factory, in the style of Derby, Bow and Chelsea porcelain as well as more European Rococo styles from Meissen and Sevres. Other objects created in Giles' studios were gilt and enamel decorated glass decanters, drinking-glasses, perfume bottles and rosewater sprinklers. His glassware is much more original and distinctive in its design than much of his porcelain decoration, with intricate gilding and elaborate grounds that post 1770 catered to fashionable tastes for splendid objets de luxe, cementing his reputation as a versatile artisan. His clientele were the cream of 18th century society and included the Princess Amelia, the daughter of George II; the Dukes of Northumberland and Marlborough; Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive (Clive of India); Thomas Pitt; the author and diarist Horace Walpole; the artist George Stubbs and the playwright Richard Sheridan. Condition Report: Etui - Hinge good, catch requires attention, the cover does not close flush, one end of the mount requires pinning (which will be carried out by a professional jeweller), losses to the white enamel band, there is a crack to the front panel of glass to the body, some rubbing to the gilding, the jewelled button is heavily chipped Glass bottles - Some rubbing to the gilding, no signs of significant chips or cracks Knife - Losses to the mother of pearl around the swivel point, so the blade is not attached Aide memoir - Minor chips Patch box - One glass panel with two heavy cracks and chips, hinge good, mirror plate in poor condition None of the pieces are marked.
