A FLEMISH BIBLICAL NARRATIVE TAPESTRY DEPICTING JUDITH AND THE BETHULIANS 17TH CENTURY approximately 353 x 287cm A comparable example to this tapestry hangs in the Cathedrale de la Sainte-Trinite de Laval, Mayenne France. It depicts a scene where the elders of the city of Bethulia, besieged by the Assyrian armies of Holophernes and succumbing to famine, ask Judith to intercede on their behalf and lend aid. Condition Report: With wear, marks, repairs and sun fading as per age, and dyes leading to fading and discolourations with right side having slightly stronger tones. Numerous odd cuts to border suggesting it may be associated. upper left quadrant with darker stains scattered- these look to be not mould but possibly prior contact with damp darker backing or wall. There are also areas here where the darker areas are by design- darker weaves to indicate shadows and areas such as door. With numerous areas of historic stitch and small patch repairs- but with fragility resulting in further losses, loose threading and open areas. It has had vertical strips of material attached to sides and spaced throughout to ensure better hanging but will need remedial conservation and probable rebacking prior to installation in domestic setting. A GEORGE I GILT GESSO SIDE TABLE IN THE MANNER OF JAMES MOORE, CIRCA 1720 The legs carved with pendant husks, the carved gilt gesso top centred with a monogram or cypher within a cartouche 85cm high, 124cm wide, 64 cm deep Provenance: The 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma and thence by descent The present table relates to examples of carved gilt gesso tables made by James Moore and other cabinet makers, including the Pelletiers and John Belchier, inspired by the late baroque designs published by Daniel Marot (1661-1752) at the beginning of the 18 th century. Marot designed ornamentation details for house interiors, fittings and furnishings including ceilings and headboards with related design features including strap work, patera, carved acanthus and flowerheads, all carved in shallow relief on a punched ground to the present table. Carved gilt gesso tables of this type demonstrate high status of the original owner, and the present lot is enhanced by the presence of a monogram or cypher (entwined Cs, X & A?) within a garter inspired cartouche, which relates to tops for tables made, for example, for the Privy Chamber in the King's apartments at Kensington and the Duke of Marlborough for Blenheim - see Bowett, Adam, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, Antique Collectors' Club, 2009, p201, pl.5:1. For an example of a carved gilt gesso table with entwined 'C' cypher, thought to be supplied by James Moore for the Duke of Chandos, see Murdoch, Tessa, The King's cabinet maker: the giltwood furniture of James Moore the Elder, The Burlington Magazine, June 2003, p417, fig 22. Bowett, ibid. p210, adds 'One might reasonably assume that gilt tops, which were both expensive and relatively vulnerable, were reserved for high status rooms, or rooms which saw little regular or informal use. Some support for this hypothesis comes from contemporary inventories. At Chicheley, built for Sir John Chester between c1718 and c1722, the only room to have a table with a gilt top was the Lady's Drawing Room, whereas the Gentleman's Drawing Room, hall and dining room and parlours had marble ones. Even so, the gilt top was protected by a leather case, and this was common practice. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use The top has some ground cracks the gesso as can be seen from the images, the underside has evidence of former bearers, or braces that are now removed The table is remarkably firm given its age and construction, with the inevitable signs of light woodworm activity to the pine blocks of the under frame. A PAIR OF LOUIS XV BEAUVAIS 'FABLES DE LA FONTAINE' TAPESTRIES CIRCA 1740 From the series 'Des Fables de la Fontaine' after Jean-Baptiste Oudry in wool and silk, with a richly decorated border of flower heads between foliage, each with royal armorial cartouche at top centre with the arms of France and Navarre, and illustrating La Lice et sa Compagne (The Bitch and Her Companion) and Les Deux Chevres, le Renard et le Buste (The Two Goats, the Fox and the Bust), both signed J B Oudry 1736 approximately 272cm high, 282cm wide Provenance: Sotheby's Monaco, 8 February 1981, lots 308 and 309 Sotheby's New York, Property from the Collections of Lily & Edmond J. Safra, 3 November 2005, lot 136 Private Collection Literature : M. Jules Badin, La Manufacture de Tapisseries de Beauvais, Paris 1909. The two present compositions are derived from designs by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (Paris 1686 - 1755 Beauvais). A painter at the Versailles court of Louis XV, Oudry was well known for his pastoral scenes and, in particular, his renderings of animals. He was appointed director of the Beauvais manufactory in 1734 and then became director of the Gobelins manufactory. The present pair of weavings came from his series of La Fontaine, first woven at Beauvais in 1736. The second weaving is probably a synthesis of two stories: Le Deux Chèvres and Le Cheval et Le Loup. It is possible that La Lice et sa Compagne was exhibited at the "Chefs-d'Oeuvre de la curiosite du Monde", Musee Des Arts Decoratifs Paris 10 June-20th September 1954. Condition Report: With wear, marks, creasing and fold marks, repairs and sun fading as per age, use and handling. Both with browning throughout and fading and discolouration. Both look to have had a remedial conservation and restoration within last 50 years. Later backing to both and with historic stitch and small repairs throughout- these are often diagonal and there has been reweaving to the more fragile areas. The fixing to later backing has led to a ripple surface. Some later areas of loose threading and open areas notably to lower edges. A PAIR OF CARVED WALNUT ARMCHAIRS IN GEORGE II STYLE, POSSIBLY INCORPORATING SOME PERIOD ELEMENTS The estimate has been updated to £8,000 -12,000 Condition Report: A PAIR OF CARVED WALNUT ARMCHAIRS IN GEORGE II STYLE, POSSIBLY INCORPORATING SOME PERIOD ELEMENTS 106cm high, 82cm wide, 62cm deep Please note: This lot should be described as above and not as originally listed in the printed catalogue The estimate has been updated to £8,000 -12,000 Condition report 14/02/26 With marks, knocks, scratches, slight chips and abrasions commensurate with age and use, covering both chairs in this lot Chair 1: Some old repairs throughout, please see images. Castor marks on back feet and less distinct marks on front feet. Slight flex across the frame as to be expected of a chair frame without covering. Signs of old wood worm to all of the underframe but not to the point of porosity and would take a tack Arms have old but effective repairs, some patches where the arms meet the backs Some ear brackets are possibly replaced and carved to match. The chair is of good colour and stands well and fairly firm given its "Nude" condition bereft of webbing or upholstery Chair 2: Some old repairs, please see images. Signs of old running repairs between top or cresting rail and back uprights as per usual with this design Carving on front legs seems a little crisp in places Seat frame partly upholstered, top of seat rail unavailable to see but in all likelihood showing some signs of old woodworm activity Inner rails with signs of an ochre wash and dark pigmented polish to simulate the dirt of ages Some veneer missing from side rails Left hand side is missing a contour block where arm meets back upright missing. The chair is of good mostly matching but variable colour and stands well and fairly firm given its semi "naked" state bereft of a large proportion of its upholstery Please see all additional images as a visual reference to this report.
