Michael Harding-Hill ' Windsor Chairs ', pg. 87 states that one of the first Worksop chair makers, John Gabbitass (fl.1822-39) made what is arguably the best nineteenth century low-back. After his death, his widow Elizabeth Gabbitass carried on the business (1839-44), the only recorded woman to run a chair workshop.
For further reference please see: Bernard D Cotton ' The English Regional Chair ' (Woodbridge, 1999), pp. 168-9 for details of the Gabbitass family and examples of essentially identical Elizabeth Gabbittas chairs. Some old losses.
The hardware is not original, there are previous old holes to the reverse of the drawer fronts, both the handles and escutcheons are replaced. However they are in period taste and suit the piece well. There are 'shadows' to the drawer fronts from where previous handles and escutcheons were previously affixed.
The chest would have originally had bun feet, these have been replaced with bracket feet which are well matched to the piece and well constructed.
The backboard appears to be original and has later tape applied over historic splits.
Solid and stable overall.
The appearance could be greatly improved by attention from a qualified restorer.

The legs carved with pendant husks, the carved gilt gesso top centred with a monogram or cypher within a cartouche

The present table relates to examples of carved gilt gesso tables made by James Moore and other cabinet makers, including the Pelletiers and John Belchier, inspired by the late baroque designs published by Daniel Marot (1661-1752) at the beginning of the 18 th century. Marot designed ornamentation details for house interiors, fittings and furnishings including ceilings and headboards with related design features including strap work, patera, carved acanthus and flowerheads, all carved in shallow relief on a punched ground to the present table.
Carved gilt gesso tables of this type demonstrate high status of the original owner, and the present lot is enhanced by the presence of a monogram or cypher (entwined Cs, X & A?) within a garter inspired cartouche, which relates to tops for tables made, for example, for the Privy Chamber in the King's apartments at Kensington and the Duke of Marlborough for Blenheim - see Bowett, Adam, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, Antique Collectors' Club, 2009, p201, pl.5:1. For an example of a carved gilt gesso table with entwined 'C' cypher, thought to be supplied by James Moore for the Duke of Chandos, see Murdoch, Tessa, The King's cabinet maker: the giltwood furniture of James Moore the Elder, The Burlington Magazine, June 2003, p417, fig 22.
Bowett, ibid. p210, adds 'One might reasonably assume that gilt tops, which were both expensive and relatively vulnerable, were reserved for high status rooms, or rooms which saw little regular or informal use. Some support for this hypothesis comes from contemporary inventories. At Chicheley, built for Sir John Chester between c1718 and c1722, the only room to have a table with a gilt top was the Lady's Drawing Room, whereas the Gentleman's Drawing Room, hall and dining room and parlours had marble ones. Even so, the gilt top was protected by a leather case, and this was common practice.

Chair 1:
Old repairs to the junction of the top or cresting rails and uprights of the back
Old repairs to the back feet
Castor marks on back feet and less distinct marks on front feet.
Slight flex across the frame as to be expected of a chair frame without covering.
Signs of wood worm to all of the underframe but not to the point of porosity and would take a tack
Arms have old but effective repairs, some patches where the arms meet the backs
Some ear brackets are possibly replaced and carved to match.
The chair is of good colour and stands well and fairly firm given its "Nude" condition bereft of webbing or upholstery
Chair 2:
Signs of old running repairs between top or cresting rail and back uprights as per usual with this design
Old running repairs to the rear feet/ legs
Carving on front legs seems a little too crisp in places
Seat frame partly upholstered, top of seat rail unavailable to see but in all likelihood showing some signs of woodworm activity
Inner rails with signs of an ochre wash and dark pigmented polish to simulate the dirt of ages
Some veneer missing from side rails
Both arms with repairs and the left hand side missing a contour block where arm meets back upright missing.
The chair is of good mostly matching but variable colour and stands well and fairly

Headfort House was designed by George Semple in the 1760s, with a suite of rooms later designed by Robert Adam between 1771 and 1775.
Condition Report:

This appears to be a Period library fitment, the panelled back was probably added later when the bookcase was removed and adapted to be free standing,

There are scratches, knocks, chips, marks, scuffing and cracks consistent with age and use.
There is some constructional joint movement so that the hinged top is not flat and does not sit flat on it's hinged counterpart.
Some cleaning and later polish to the tables that is more apparent and extensive to one table, some small variations to the carving.
The tables different style of hinges, both of age.
There are some repairs and replacements to the hinged leg support area and around the hinges of the top and to some sections of veneer; some possible later timber to the underside of the table top possibly to flatten the surface. There are some dowel repairs.
A pleasing feature of this pair of tables is the burr wood ovals to the exterior and interior surfaces.

The top with some water marks and minor discolouration, see images for extent. However, this can be easily rectified with the attention from a qualified restorer.

The present cabinets relate to the work of Ince & Mayhew (1758-1811) through the use of satinwood and specimen timber neoclassical marquetry, specifically with the use of anthemion, wreaths, ribbons, pendant swags and painted portrait medallions. For a further comparable pair of cabinets after designs by Thomas Chippendale Junior, see Christie's, London, Apter-Fredericks: 75 Years of Important English Furniture, 19th January 2021, lot 40 (£106,250 incl. BP).
Mrs. Plant (née Mae Caldwell, formerly Manwaring, and later Mrs. William Hayward and Mrs. John Rovensky) and her husband, the Morton F. Plant (1851-1918), were building their new residence at Fifth Avenue and 86th Street and looking to sell their mansion at Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street. In what is now considered a famous exchange, the mansion (valued at $950,000) was exchanged in a deal with Cartier for an exceptional pair of natural pearl necklaces valued at $1.5 million, plus $100. This famous deal placed Cartier in secured a grand mansion to serve as Cartier's New York headquarters which remains today.
Between 15th-19th January 1957, Mrs Plants collection from her Fifth Avenue residence, along with selected pieces from her additional property at Clarendon Court, were sold in a landmark auction, 'The Art Collection of the Late Mrs. John E. Rovensky' , Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York. The present lot was offered in this sale as lot 595.

This elegant table compares very closely to a number of other known tables of this design and which were likely to have been made by Chippendale. In Christopher Gilbert's 'The Life & Work Of Thomas Chippendale, this model of table is described as one of Chippendale's 'most popular occasional table design types' with its veneer segmented hexagonal top, baluster shaped pedestal and similarly profiled legs, although variously presented. Chippendale supplied tables of this type to some of his most relevant patrons, for example: three tables to Edward Lascelles at Harewood House; another to Sir Lawrence Dundas at 19 Arlington Street, London; and another to Ninian Home at Paxton House.
The present lot varies from the majority of this group by having lion paw feet, however for three examples sold at auction with outward scrolling feet, see Christie's, London , The Barratt Collection - from Crowe Hall, Bath (7821), 16th December 2010, Lot 77 (£23,750 incl. BP); The English Collector & Tapestries - 500 Years Decorative Arts Europe (7996), 3rd November 2011, Lot 68 (£23,750 incl. BP); and Sotheby's New York, The Vision of Aso O. S. Jamar, recorded BIFMO in London and Liverpool; cabinet maker (fl. 1818-45), at 29 Wardour St, Soho. In 1818 Jamar advertised his range of furniture in the French manner that he manufactured in London.
For a related Regency rosewood and brass inlaid table stamped 'S Jamar' see Christie's, London, Important English Furniture, 6th April 2000, Lot 108 (£11,750 incl. BP).
The title to the underside for Mr Burdett-Coutts is a likely reference to William Lehman Ashmead Bartlett Burdett-Coutts (1851-1921), husband to Baroness Burdett-Coutts. Angela Georgina (1814-1906), the youngest daughter of Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Baronet (1770-1844) by Sophia (1794-1849), eldest daughter of Thomas Coutts and his first wife, Susan, changed her name by royal licence in 1837 to Burdett-Coutts. Following the inheritance of her grandfather's fortune of £1.8 million in 1837, she was widely known as 'the richest heiress in England' and in 1871 Miss Burdett-Coutts, who was a friend of Queen Victoria and one of the greatest philanthropists of the 19th century, was created Baroness Burdett-Coutts. Following the Baroness' death in 1906 and her husband's in 1921, in May 1922 the 'Burdett-Coutts Collection of Porcelain Objects of Art' was sold at Messrs. Christie, Manson & Woods.

Y A GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND BRASS MOUNTED CAMPAIGN OR PURSER'S WRITING DESK OR BOX

Fitted interior with side aperture for safe fixing to wood table support, with a hidden brass catch operating to reveal three shallow drawers with ivory handles, with a printed maker's label " N Middleton 162 The Strand..."

Nicholas Middleton is recorded at 162 The Strand, London, 1801-1810. In 1801 he is recorded as supplying the Royal Household with 'a Case for Box seat to the Nabob' costing £1 16s; and on 27 December 1810, a writing box costing £5 4s. 10d., recorded in the accounts on 22nd January 1812. [Windsor Royal Archives, 88916, 89031].

A REGENCY CARVED GILTWOOD CONVEX GIRANDOLE MIRROR

Condition Report:
Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use.
Some old chips and splits.
Some minor old repairs, the gilding has been refreshed at some point and bears the expected areas of loss, wear and minor discolouration.
The mirror plate is a later replacement, the back board holding the plate in position is also later replaced.
The gilded surface with some areas of additional chips and losses most notably to the scroll arm supports.
The two carved floral sprays positioned on the top edge of the mirror are held with pins to holes within the frame, the positioning of this may not be correct and there may be some additional losses to this carving.
Overall, of pleasing stature and carving with great presence in the room.

Locks and handles appear to be original
Very very minor historical old worm activity at the back legs
Old minor cracking to the veneer to the side of each bookcase
Standing well and of good figuring
