From the collection of the vendor's grandfather, the Classical archaeologist and fellow of New College Oxford, Stanley Casson FSA (1889-1944). At New College he lectured in archaeology and delivered lectures for Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum. In 1927 he was promoted to university lecturer as the first holder of Oxford's Readership in Classical Archaeology. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, made an honorary member of the Bulgarian Archaeological Institute, and awarded the Greek Order of the Redeemer.

ATTRIBUTED TO SIR FRANCIS CHANTREY R.A. (1781-1842), A MARBLE PORTRAIT BUST OF JAMES NORTHCOTE R.A. 19TH CENTURY Later signed and dated 'CHANTREY. 1811 to reverse, on a circular marble socle 82cm high overall, 61.5cm wide across the shoulders, the base approximately 27cm diameter Provenance : Private Collection Literature : Alison Yarrington, Ilene D Lieberman, Alex Potts and Malcolm Barber, An Edition of the Ledger of Sir Francis Chantrey, R.A., at the Royal Academy, 1809-1842, The fifty-sixth volume of the Walpole Society 1991/1992, London, 1994 ( Chantrey Ledgers ). Mrs Reginald Lane Poole, Catalogue of Portraits in the Possession of the University, Colleges, City, and County of Oxford (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1912), Cat No. 639. Martin Postle, Northcote, James (1746-1831), artist and author, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. This portrait bust has been in a private collection for the last thirty or so years with the subject depicted unknown. Research has revealed that it is possibly a work believed lost, Chantrey's bust of fellow artist James Northcote which Chantrey exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1812. There are two know depictions of Northcote by Chantrey, the best known being his 1831 life-size seated memorial figure at Exeter Cathedral. The second is the plaster cast of the bust which was presented by Lady Chantrey to the Ashmolean in 1842 (Accession no. WA1842.136). Inspection of his ledgers for 1811-1812 shows a large marble bust appearing not as a client commission but rather it is listed in the Checklist of busts not included in the ledger (Chantrey Ledgers pp.334). The whereabouts of the bust seemed to be unknown however it is mentioned as part of the description for Chantrey's 1831 memorial (Chantrey Ledgers 237a, pp.266) in which Alison Yarrington suggests that 28-30 years later he would have been able to refer to the earlier bust still held in his studio. Despite the evident later damages to the plaster, in comparison with this bust it is more "true to life"- with eyebrows and skin imperfections more visible. It is likely that in his Royal Academy presented work, Chantrey smoothed back the imperfections presenting a figure with the more idealised ageless surface of the Ancients. The memorial depiction captures the painter at a later stage of life- but still retaining what Postle describes- a man who was "small and lean with angular features". James Northcote had died at his home in Argyll Place, London, in 1831, leaving a small fortune with a specific bequest of " £1000 to the sculptor Francis Chantrey for his monument to be placed in St Andrew's Church, Plymouth " (although it ended up in Exeter Cathedral). Northcote had earnt his wealth as a portraitist, narrative and genre painter, as well as being an author of note and biographer of Sir Joshua Reynolds. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1786, becoming a full member in 1787. He exhibited at the Royal Academy every year from 1781 to 1825 (apart from 1790) and worked widely across genres, producing literary works for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, genre works and animal paintings, with portraits remaining a staple throughout his career. There are several recorded portraits of Northcote from this time which bear comparison when identifying the subject: James Northcote by George Henry Harlow oil on panel, circa 1817 (National Portrait Gallery NPG 969): James Northcote by Henry Meyer, published by Henry Colburn, after John Jackson stipple engraving, published 24 June 1813 (National Portrait Gallery NPG D14710).

RICHARD JAMES WYATT (1795-1850), A WHITE MARBLE BUST OF A YOUNG NYMPH

Muriel Emily ('Molly') Ashley (née Spencer) (d.1954), 2nd wife of Wilfred William Ashley, 1st Baron Mount Temple, at Broadlands, Hampshire, and thence by descent to her niece, The Hon. Angela Delevingne (née Greenwood) (1912-2014).
The grandson of the architect James Wyatt, Wyatt studied alongside John Gibson in Rome under Canova and Thorvaldsen. A frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy, he settled in Rome and exhibited 10 works at The Great Exhibition and was awarded one of the four first-class gold medals retrospectively.
This head is derived from a full length work by Wyatt "Nymph Bathing", an example of which is held by English Heritage, at Wrest Park (Accession number 88272040). Wyatt designed Nymph going to the Bath in 1831, originally for Maximilian de Beauharnais, Duc de Leuchtenburg, and exhibited the original at the Royal Academy in 1831.
A comparable example of a depiction of just the head of a nymph by Wyatt is held in the National Trust Collection at Tyntesfield, North Somerset, acquired from Marseille Middleton Holloway (25 Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London) by William Gibbs (for £57 15s for the pair) in 1861 (NT 20163).

The original 4th century marble figure on which this is based was excavated by Gavin Hamilton in 1792 on Prince Borghese's property at Gabii outside Rome. In September 1807 it was purchased together with the bulk of the Borghese antiquities by Napoleon Bonaparte and was sent from Rome to Paris and by 1820 it was displayed in the Louvre where it still stands.

Formerly in the collection of the Shaw scholar Dan H. Laurence.
Comparison should be made with the photograph of the original work by Strobl held in the Victoria & Albert Museum (Accession number 5347-1938). The photograph is from a collection bequeathed by William Kineton Parkes in 1938. Kineton Parkes was a novelist, art historian and librarian, who sent out questionnaires to sculptors in the 1920s. The photograph is one of many which were sent to Kineton Parkes by the sculptors he approached to complete the questionnaire. The Strobl original bust was circa 1932.
Condition Report:
Surface dirt and paint cracking, pooling from various layers of applied decoration. Small margin bruises and darker patches which seem to be by design to better indicate modelling and shadows - reverse bottom edge with white scuffs

Weathered and with no fixed base- currently with two shaped wedges to base of each feet- these will not keep a figure upright and this will require attention to sort. Signs of old repairs around construction joints- neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, knees and ankles. Probably has aggregate within legs which has swelled in frost and caused some splits . Colour variance from exposure, rain etc
