A GEORGE II STYLE WALNUT AND NEEDLEWORK SETTEE EARLY 20TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF GILES GRENDEY, POSSIBLY BY CHARLES TOZER, BROOK STREET With a rectangular padded back, out-turned arms and a loose cushion, covered in floral needlework, the rails with palmette cartouches, on shell-carved cabriole legs with claw and ball feet 102cm high, 220cm wide, 85cm deep
The distinctive cartouche displayed on the seat rail derives from a pattern employed by the Clerkenwell furniture maker Giles Grendey (d.1780). A similar device features on a pair of walnut chairs of c.1730 that bear Grendey's trade label (recorded in the UK trade), a single chair from the collection of Percy Macquoid is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, Dictionary of English Furniture , 1954, vol. I, p. 263, fig. 114 and on a settee bearing the arms of Chetham's Hospital, Manchester ( ibid . vol . III, p. 82, fig 26). The pattern also corresponds to the Houghton Hall `Eagle suite', supplied to Sir Robert Walpole in the 1720s. Excecuted in giltwood with a sanded surface, the maker of this suite of furniture comprising twelve armchairs and a settee is undocumented but the likely candidates are either William Bradshaw (d.1775) or Benjamin Goodison (d.1767).
Charles Tozer was a cabinetmaker and retailer of high-quality revivalist furniture, notably in the Queen Anne and early Georgian styles with showrooms at 25 Brook Street, (previously a gallery occupied by the legendary dealer Joseph Duveen) from 1910 to 1975.

The plates apparently original. Some losses to the gilt divisions and borders of the marginal plates. As noted originally with a cresting - there is a redundant securing hole in the top of the frame, and likely with a bracket below (for candle branches?).

The latter had the rare distinction of having been in the collections of both Percival Griffiths and Frederick Poke. Griffiths (d.1937) created arguably the most important 20th century British collection of `classic' English furniture at his home Sandridgebury, Herts under the guidance of the writer and furniture historian Robert Wemyss Symonds and his collection has come to be regarded as a benchmark of excellence. Poke (d.1974) was one of a slightly later group of distinguished collectors also advised by Symonds who, through his relationships, often acted as a conduit for the transfer of objects between collectors.

Good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks throughout, minor losses to the carving and the gilding is worn revealing the red bole beneath.
Some of the decoration is formed of gesso and there are losses revealing the carved pine carcase.
Some old worm damage to the carcases.
The marble tops are intact and apparently original. Some edge nibbles. One marble repaired with a reinforcing slab cemented to the underside.

A GEORGE III PARCEL GILT AND BRONZED SYCAMORE AND WENGE SIDE CABINET

With a white marble top and brass grille doors flanked by tapering pilasters with Egyptian terms and turned feet, inscribed in chalk to the underside Davy

The cabinet shows marked similarity with the work of George Simson (d.1839), cabinet-maker and undertaker of 19 St Paul's Churchyard. He was a subscriber to Sheraton's Drawing Book in 1793 and was listed as master cabinet-maker in the 1803 Cabinet Dictionary .
Simson had a substantial business but little is known of his customers. Payments are recorded from the 2nd Viscount Palmerston, possibly in connection with Broadlands, Hants, and a bill dated 13 February 1809 for upholstery goods supplied by Simson is in the accounts for Gorhambury House, Herts. His label, and in later years his stamp, is recorded on a large number of high quality items employing exotic and well-figured veneers and he was probably also the maker of the distinctive cabinets retailed by the Weeks Museum of Haymarket, established in 1797. Notably, a mahogany cabinet by Simson was designed in the Egyptian taste (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700 - 1840 , Leeds, 1996, p.426, fig. 853) and a bookcase in the Egyptian style has also been noted.
