The chairs' design relates to patterns published by Thomas Chippendale in The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director , pl. first edition, 1754, pl. XIII, and again in the the third edition, 1763, pl. X. The pattern was hugely popular and variations were made in quantities, so much so that another closely related design featuring gothic tracery and a quatrefoil to the splat and square tapering legs was issued by Thomas Malton in his Compleat Treatise on Perspective , 1775, pl. XXXIII, fig 130, subscribers to which included no less than Thomas Chippendale, Linnell and Ince & Mayhew.

A REGENCY ORMOLU-MOUNTED PARCEL-GILT AND BRONZED AMBOYNA SECRETAIRE A ABATTANT

The secretaire bears comparison with documented works by the Regency cabinet-makers Marsh & Tatham, of Mount Street, London. The business evolved from an earlier firm established by William Marsh and George Elward, who were joined by Thomas Tatham in 1793, the firm traded as Marsh and Tatham from 1803 and under various names until Tatham's death in 1818 and were celebrated as 'Upholders' to George, Prince of Wales, later George IV.
Thomas Tatham's brother was the architect Charles Heathcote Tatham (d. 1842) whose influential drawings made in Rome were first published in Etchings [...] of Ancient Ornamental Architecture , 1799 and included Roman antiquities as models for cabinet-makers and other craftsmen. He was employed by Henry Holland in 1788 at a time when Holland was involved in the furnishing of Carlton House Terrace and at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, for the Prince of Wales, and he undoubtedly supplied designs to his brother Thomas as well as making introductions to important patrons.
The present lot displays the refined style shared with such items as the suite of four `Grecian' ormolu-mounted yew-wood bookcases supplied by Marsh & Tatham for Carlton House Terrace in 1806, and another pair made of mahogany and ebony, the latter displaying almost identical frieze mounts to the secretaire offered here (see H. Roberts, For The King's Pleasure , London, 2001, pp. 400, 404 & 406).
Interestingly, two pairs of very similar console tables attributed to Marsh and Tatham also featured simulated porphyry plinths, one pair at Castle Howard, Yorkshire, where Marsh & Tatham were recorded as working on two occasions from September 1801 - July 1802, and again from 1811 - 1812 (T. Buckrell Pos, 'Tatham and Italy: Influences on English Neo-classical design', Furniture History , 2002, vol. 38, p. 67), and another at Harewood House, Yorkshire, probably commissioned by Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood (d.1820) as part of the Regency `Egyptian style' refurbishment of Harewood's Entrance Hall, sold Christie's, London, 21 May 2015, lot 46 (£15,000 including premium).

By tradition the first Cumberland-action dining-table was made for Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland, 4th son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and brother of George III. He was a patron in the 1770s of the prominent furniture-maker and designer John Linnell and it's possible that he was the first recipient of a sophisticated design which is a development of the double gateleg table, adapted so that the legs support the weight of the table without obstructing the sitters.

Jacques Dubois, maître in 1742.
Jacques Dubois (1694 - 1763) worked as an ouvrier privilegié in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine before achieving his maîtrise in 1742 and was thus not bound by the strict guild regulations endured by most other ébénistes . Elected a juré of the guild in 1752, he was one of the most prolific cabinet-makers in the Louis XV period and is known to have collaborated with the marchands-merciers Jean-Jacques Machart, Bertin and Pierre I Migeon. Indeed, the inventory taken after his death revealed an extensive workshop with twelve workbenches and over one hundred pieces of furniture in various stages of completion.
Dubois produced a great number of commodes in lacquer, marquetry and parqutry. A comparable commode with two drawers was sold anonymously Christie's, Paris, 4 October 2006, lot 299 (EUR 16,800).

These chairs correspond closely to the large body of work attributed to the Clerkenwell workshop of Giles Grendey (1693-1780), examples of which are illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture , 1996, p. 242, fig. 435 and p. 248, fig 449). Grendey was unusual in that numerous pieces from his workshop bear his trade label and many also the stamped initials of his journeymen. The initials `TT' and `ID' are both previously recorded, the former on a pair of red and gilt japanned chairs that were part of the extensive suite of furniture supplied by Grendey around 1735 - 40 for the Lazcano Castle, San Sebastian, Spain, sold Christie's, London, 10 November 2021, lot 130 (£62,500 including premium), the latter on a chair also bearing Grendey's label, in the collection formed by John H. Bryan, Crab Tree Farm, Illinois.
Another set of four walnut chairs formerly in the historied collections of Percival D. Griffiths and Irwin Untermyer display many characteristics associated with Grendey's oeuvre and additionally feature a carved circlet on the legs similar to the chairs offered here (see C. Jussel & W. DeGrigorio, English Furniture 1680 - 1760 The Percival D. Griffiths Collection , New Haven & London, 2003, p. 131, F114).
Grendey established a large workshop in St. John's Square, Clerkenwell in 1731, trading until at least 1755, and serving both domestic and overseas markets. He is known primarily for seat furniture, predominantly of walnut but also japanned and of mahogany. He counted Richard Hoare at Barn Elms, Sir Jacob Bouverie at Longford Castle, Henry Hoare at Stourhead and Lord Scarsdale at Kedleston Hall among his patrons, while the extensive suite of japanned furniture he supplied for Lazcano Castle, including seat furniture, mirrors, card table, candle stands and secretaire-cabinets, more than 77 items in total, represents one of the most important groups of English 18th century furniture with pieces in major museums worldwide.
A pair of related walnut chairs attributed to Grendey and also with stamped journeyman's initials was sold Sotheby's, London, The Personal Collection of Sir Joseph Hotung, Part II, Sotheby's, London, 8 December 2022, lot 285 (£21,420 including premium).

The chairs are attributed to the Edinburgh furniture maker Alexander Peter (fl. 1713 - 1772) based upon the fret-carving pattern on their legs which corresponds exactly with the set of dining-chairs supplied by Peter to the Earl of Dumfries for Dumfries House in 1759. By that time he was already long-established in Edinburgh, the first known account in his own name being for the Earl of Islay in 1733. He was listed in the 1752 Directory of Edinburgh and in addition to his workshop he maintained warehouses for his stock of ready made furniture and a timber yard. An advertisement in the Edinburgh Chronicle, 23 January 1760, details the wide range of furniture he offered including second hand goods.
Peter's clients included the Duke of Gordon (1738), Lord Doune (1734 - 37), the Earls of Hopetoun (1744 - 1764) and the Earl of Breadalbane (1745 and 1754) while furniture attributed to him is at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and at Gosford House but his reputation rests largely upon the commission for Dumfries House.
Peter had been employed by the Earl of Dumfries in Edinburgh from December 1756, he seems to have been first involved at Dumfries House from early in 1759 and by 1764 he had supplied furniture and carried out work to the value of over £400, nearly all for work at Dumfries. His furniture there complements that of Thomas Chippendale who was was also employed by the Duke, and it follows closely Chippendale's designs; it's clear that Peter was a follower of the `Master', his work shared common stylistic features and his work was of comparable quality. This is no surprise as Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director had been available in Edinburgh very soon after first publication in 1753 so the designs would have been very familiar to both craftsmen and patrons.
Among the most important furniture he supplied for Dumfries was the set of 24 dining-room chairs wt carving on the front & feet , dining-table, and the side board table for ye dining room... high cut wt fret work on ye feet & rails , the design taken from the first edition of Chippendale's Director (1754) with a minor deviation to the pattern of the fretwork. The chairs offered here share the same pattern of fretwork to the legs and stretchers though the backs are different. Another pair of chairs of the same pattern as those offered here, with rococo foliate-carved backs and the same fretwork are very possibly from the same set. Attributed to Alexander Peter, they were recently acquired for the the collection of National Museums Scotland (K.2020.26.1).

The Blake family are perhaps less well known than many of their 19th century competitors and collaborators, but they are documented as makers of fine `buhl' furniture as early as 1826 when Robert Blake is recorded as a `cabinet inlayer and buhl manufacturer' at 8 Stephen Street, London (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700 - 1840 , Leeds,, 1996, p.18). Over subsequent decades Robert's sons George, Charles, James and Henry were all associated with the firm, and they occupied various premises as the firm's activities and fortunes changed. Their interest in Boulle as a designer is illustrated by the series of commodes, exact replicas of those created by Boulle,for Louis XIV at the Grand Trianon of which a pair is in the Frick Collection (116.5.02-3). The firm are likely to have executed ambitious works for the dealer Edward Holmes Baldock, an `ostentatiously splendid' Erard grand piano by G.H.Blake supplied to Thomas Lord Foley for Witley Court is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (59.76). A marquetry table in the Elizabethan revival style was supplied by George Blake & Co., circa 1845 to Paul Methuen, 1st Baron Methuen for Corsham Court, Wilts, now in the Victoria & Albert Museum (acc. no. w.20-1995).
Related tables with stylistic associations with Blake have been sold Christie's, London, 13 November 2014, lot 119 (£7500 including premium) and 23 November 2006, lot 33 (£33,600 including premium), the latter probably having been commissioned around 1848 by Queen Victoria's Board of Works for King Louis-Philippe (d. 1850), the recently abdicated King of France who settled at Claremont, Surrey.
