Provenance: From the private collection of Micky Johnson Exhibited: London, No 20 Arts, Twelve at Number Twenty , 1 February - 12 March 2017 Paula Rego was a Portuguese-born artist who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and became a key member of The London Group alongside David Hockney and Frank Auerbach. Widely regarded as the pre-eminent female artist of the late 20th and early 21st century, Rego's work explores human relationships through stories of women's agency, resilience, and survival. Drawing on folk tales, literature and politics, her work ranges from prints and storybook-inspired drawings to the Abortion series (1998-99) and Female Genital Mutilation series (2008-09). The present work titled Grandmother from 2001 illustrates Rego's exploration of hand painting lithographs to add a unique layer of individuality to each piece. The work is transformed from a limited edition print into a one-of-a kind artwork. This technique allowed for a more personal, tactile connection to the image. Rego could control the emotional intensity of the work, adjust the mood and emphasise important elements. Rego explored this method with other series of prints including those produced in her Jane Eyre series. Rego's work is held in major collections including the British Museum, the Tate, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Major exhibitions include a large-scale retrospective at Tate Britain in 2021 and inclusion of Rego's works in the 59th Venice Biennale ( The Milk of Dreams , 2022).
