λ LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY (BRITISH 1887-1976) PORTRAIT OF A MAN IN PROFILE WEARING A HAT Pencil 20.5 x 20cm (8 x 7¾ in.) Unframed Together with a photograph of the artist and six letters from the artist. Provenance: A gift from the artist to the present owner in 1966 The group of six letters were written between November 1965 and February 1967, either from Lowry's home in Cheshire, or the Seaburn Hotel in Sunderland to a final year art student, Anne Kerfoot, who had contacted the artist, asking if he would be willing to be the subject of her final year dissertation. Lowry not only met Miss Kerfoot, spending the day with her, showing his work and answering her questions. He also lent her several drawings selected to show his progression as an artist, from student days to his latest work to augment her thesis. He also gave her a studio portrait photograph, which he apparently had taken after his first exhibition at The Lefevre Gallery because he was 'pleased as punch' with himself. She later recalled that 'when he was sure I had all the information I needed he offered me a boiled egg and Christmas cake. He then finished an amazing day by donning his trilby and overcoat and seeing me safely onto the bus to Stalybridge' The artist and art student corresponded throughout her last year as a student and following her graduation she returned the drawings to him, along with a copy of her thesis. He returned the drawings to her as a keepsake of their time together, writing 'it was very interesting - it always is most interesting to see other view points of one's work. I thank you very much for sending it to me.' (letter 8 February 1967). The portrait was one of the drawings which Lowry gave to the art student. In 1948, Lowry moved from Pendlebury where he had lived with his mother until her death in 1930, to The Elms in Mottrem-in-Longdendale, Cheshire. Although he apparently never liked the 'ugly stone-built house', seeing it as a convenient base from which to travel and see friends. The artist began to visit Berwick-upon-Tweed from the mid-1930s and liked the town so much began to stay there regularly, often for long periods, especially after 1960 and even thought about settling there in the late 1940s, before he bought The Elms. It provided him with a retreat from his life as a successful artist, as well as offering an endless supply of subject matter in the architecture, coast, sea and shipping. He liked to stay at the Seaburn Hotel, always staying in the same room (room 104), which from its shorefront position, looked straight out over the expanse of the North Sea.
