"Apollo 20 was taken off the schedule five months after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had 'won' the Moon race. Apollo 18 and 19 were canceled soon afterward, as budget cuts, and changing political priorities, impacted NASA. When Schmitt, Cernan and Evans prepared for a dramatic nighttime launch on December 7, 1972, they knew that it would be a good few years before anyone followed them to the Moon, but they never imagined that another half a century would pass, and still no one would have built upon their achievements." - Space historian Piers Bizony (Bizony, p.169)
[original NASA caption for the photograph] CAPE KENNEDY, FLORIDA APOLLO 17 LIFTOFF - The huge, 363-feet tall Apollo 17 (Spacecraft 114/Lunar Module 12/Saturn 512) space vehicle is launched from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 12:33 a.m. (EST), December 7, 1972. Apollo 17, the final lunar landing mission in NASA's Apollo program, was the first nighttime lift off of the Saturn V Launch vehicle. Aboard the Apollo 17 spacecraft were Astronaut Bugene A. Cernan, commander; Astronaut Ronald E. Evans, command module pilot; and Scientist-Astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt, lunar module pilot. Flame from the five F-1 engines of the Apollo/Saturn first (3-1C) stage illuminates the nighttime scene. A two-hour and forty-minute hold delayed the Apollo 17 launching. A man on the Moon-a superb printing of this iconic photograph etched into our collective visual memory.
Aldrin's gold-plated visor reflects his photographer Neil Armstrong, the Eagle, the American flag, the Solar Wind Collector, and even Earth itself-a tiny dot at the top center of the visor. This remarkable composition encapsulates the spirit of the Apollo 11 mission in a single frame. Neil Armstrong captured this legendary full-length portrait of Buzz Aldrin, widely known as the "Visor Shot," using the 70mm Hasselblad 500 EL Data Camera mounted on the Remote Control Unit on his chest. In the photograph, Aldrin stands beside one of the golden landing pads of the Lunar Module (Eagle).
" Nothing prepared me for the starkness of the Moon. The barren terrain was a dusty gray with many little craters in every direction. The sky was utter blackness, void of any stars. As I walked away from the Eagle Lunar Module, Neil said, 'Hold it, Buzz.' So I stopped and turned around, and then he took what has become known as the 'Visor' photo. Captured moments after humanity's first steps on another world, this iconic photograph became a visual emblem of exploration itself-an unmistakable trace of human presence beyond Earth, preserved unchanged on the Moon's surface for millions of years.
Often mistaken for Neil Armstrong's first step, the image in fact records Buzz Aldrin's bootprint impressed into the fine lunar regolith at Tranquility Base during Apollo 11. Aldrin created the impression while carrying out the soil-mechanics footprint (bootprint) task listed on his cuff checklist, intended to assess the bearing strength and cohesion of the lunar surface. The sharply defined imprint of the pressure-ridged sole, set beside a shallow lunar depression, vividly reveals the powdery texture of the Moon's soil and the permanence of human contact in an airless environment.

The most celebrated image of the Earth rising above the Moon's horizon. This is the first Earthrise witnessed by humans and captured in colour on camera. The view was observed by the crew of Apollo 8 at 75h 48m and 39s hours of the mission and during the fourth orbit of the Moon.
A superb printing of this iconic photograph, taken by astronaut William Anders on December 24, 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission, showing Earth rising above the lunar horizon as seen from the spacecraft in orbit around the Moon. This was also the first colour photograph taken during the event.
The view shifted humanity's mindsets of our planet, inspiring the environmental movement and reinforcing the idea of Earth as a small, interconnected, and fragile home for all life. Seeing Earth from this distance brought a new awareness of the planet's vulnerability and its unity, transcending borders, politics, and divisions. It became the cover photo of TIME's Great Images of the 20th Century and the central image on the cover of LIFE's 100 Photographs That Changed the World .
Different versions of the image, with varying contrasts and tones, were released by NASA at the time, including this magnificent version, which closely matches the one published in LIFE Magazine on January 10, 1969. Stunning large-format print of one of the most iconic images in human history.
Buzz Aldrin stands beside the American flag at Tranquility Base during Apollo 11, the first human landing on the Moon. Photographed by Neil Armstrong shortly after the crew succeeded in planting the flag into the firm lunar regolith, the image shows Aldrin pausing in the stark lunar landscape, surrounded by bootprints impressed into the fine soil and framed against the absolute blackness of space.
The photograph was deliberately composed by Armstrong and Aldrin to record this historic moment. Aldrin turns slightly toward Armstrong to confirm the image has been taken; a faint glint of light penetrates his gold visor, revealing a subtle glimpse of his face.
More than a symbol of national achievement, the flag marked humanity's arrival on another world. In the profound silence of the Moon-absent wind, sound, or atmosphere-the scene captures a singular instant in which exploration, technology, and history converged, leaving an enduring trace of human presence beyond Earth.
As the astronauts erected the American flag, the scene was described by Mission Control in Houston to Michael Collins orbiting the Moon in Columbia.

A true vintage print of "The Blue Marble," often cited as the most widely reproduced photograph in history , issued by NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center following Apollo 17. The image shows the fully illuminated Earth, from approximately 18,000 nautical miles, the only such photograph captured by humans. Africa, Madagascar, the Southern Ocean, and Antarctica are revealed in a single, unified view. NASA editors cropped the surrounding blackness of space to magnify Earth's presence, subtly enhancing the image's visual and symbolic power. Upon its release, the photograph became a defining icon of the Space Age and a catalyst for the modern environmental movement.
All three astronauts were profoundly struck by the sight. Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans exclaimed , "The Earth fills up window five... What a beauty!" Commander Gene Cernan reflected, "I suppose we're seeing as 100 percent full Earth as we'll ever see... these are the kinds of views that stick with you forever." Harrison Schmitt observed, "If there ever was a fragile-appearing piece of blue in space, it's the Earth right now."
In May 1972, Kodak introduced photographic paper bearing the watermark "This paper manufactured by Kodak," most often on resin-coated stock. NASA, however, continued to use its remaining supply of earlier fibre-based paper marked "A Kodak Paper" through the end of the Apollo programme. The presence of fibre-based paper here-rather than later resin-coated stock-unmistakably identifies this print as a vintage example produced shortly after the mission, even when bearing the later watermark. From the mission transcript (photograph taken at about T+005:06:24 after launch): 005:03:10 Evans: Oh, I'll change the lens now. 005:03:11 Overmyer (Mission Control): 17, Houston. It's about 30 seconds from the (SIVB) evasive maneuver burn. 005:03:17 Cernan: Okay. 005:03:19 Evans: Here, Jack, can you see him (the discarded SIVB) good? Check the settings there. I took an f/22 stop. 005:03:51 Cernan: There it goes, Bob. 005:03:52 Evans: There it goes; finally. [...] 005:17:37 Schmitt: That view of the Earth for a rev there was something I was looking forward to and I was not disappointed. 005:17:49 Overmyer (Mission Control): That's great, Jack. [...] 005:21:07 Schmitt: Could you give us our distance from the Earth? [...] 005:21:24 Overmyer: 18,100 [nautical miles, 33,520 km], FIDO (Flight Dynamics Officer) says. [...] 005:21:27 Cernan: Okay. And I suppose we're seeing as 100 percent full Earth as we'll ever see; certainly as I've ever seen. It appears to be - it may be a little bit - a little bit of a terminator way out to the - well, to the east - out beyond Australia and beyond India. But beyond that it's about 99 percent pure. 005:22:59 Cernan: Bob, it's these kind of views - these kind of views that stick with you forever. [...] 005:25:56 Cernan: You know - and there's no strings holding it up either. It's out there all by itself. [...] 005:49:47 Overmyer (Mission Control): Did you get any pictures of that, Jack? 005:49:50 Schmitt: Oh, yes. We got some pictures earlier. I'm going to get another one here in a minute. I'll tell you, if there ever was a fragile-appearing piece of blue in space, it's the Earth right now.

A multiple milestone in space photography, this photograph is the first still photograph of a human in space (until this point all released images of astronauts were taken by television or monitoring cameras) and taken by another human. Ed White floated out of the spacecraft wearing a specially designed suit and gold-plated helmet to protect him against unfiltered rays of the sun, as well as emergency oxygen tank. A 25-foot long umbilical line and a tether line connect him to the spacecraft. He used a Hand-Held Manoeuvring Unit (HHMU) to manoeuvre around the spacecraft at more than 100 miles (160 kilometres) above the Pacific Ocean, while James McDivitt took photographs. Aside from being a milestone experiment, it was also a thoroughly enjoyable experience for White, as evidenced in the mission transcript at the moment the photograph was taken:

The dawn of humanity's visual legacy in space.
This historic photograph of Earth from space, captured by John Glenn during Friendship 7's first orbit on February 20, 1962, marks a pivotal moment in space exploration: Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth and the first human to take photographs from space. The planet's blue and brilliant curvature is framed against the black expanse of space, with scattered clouds visible over the ocean. His photographs appeared in National Geographic in June 1962, offering humanity an unprecedented view of Earth's beauty and mystery.
At the time, photography in space was merely experimental-NASA had no dedicated space photography department yet. Glenn even purchased his own camera for the mission, making vintage photographs from his flight extraordinarily rare. Unlike Yuri Gagarin, the first human in orbit, Alan Shepard, the first American in space, who had no camera, or even Gherman Titov who only had a motion picture camera, Glenn carried a still camera aboard his spacecraft: a 35mm Ansco Autoset (a repackaged Minolta Hi-Matic) with a 50mm lens. Initially, NASA vetoed Glenn's request to bring a camera, concerned it would distract him from mission objectives. However, after appealing to NASA Director Robert Gilruth, Glenn was granted permission. Following advice from LIFE photographer Ralph Morse, Glenn purchased the camera at a drugstore in Cocoa Beach, Florida. NASA technicians then modified it with a trigger mechanism so Glenn could operate it while wearing his spacesuit gloves. Glenn's photos gave humanity its first visual understanding of the fragility and interconnectedness of our planet. They shifted human consciousness, planting the seeds of environmental awareness and underscoring the preciousness of Earth. For the first time, our planet appeared vulnerable against the vastness of space-a perspective that profoundly influenced the environmental movement.

Apollo 4 marked the historic first flight of the Saturn V rocket, engineered by its chief architect, Wernher von Braun. This image conveys the immense power and capability of the rocket destined to carry humans to the Moon. Symbolically, it represents humanity's ambition to push boundaries and achieve the extraordinary.
"The [Saturn V] rocket will free man from his remaining chains, the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet. It will open to him the gates of heaven." -Wernher von Braun
On November 9, 1967, at 7:00 a.m. EST, the Saturn V launched from Kennedy Space Center with flames and smoke billowing out as the engines produced a staggering 7.5 million pounds of thrust, lifting the massive vehicle into the sky and producing one of the loudest human-made sounds ever recorded. The roar was so powerful it could be felt three miles away, astonishing even veteran launch viewers. Von Braun, observing the liftoff, famously shouted, " Go, baby, go! "
Apollo 4 was the first mission to launch from Launch Complex 39, a facility specially built for the 363-foot Saturn V rocket. The flight plan placed the Apollo spacecraft and the rocket's third stage into a 117-mile orbit. After two orbits, the third stage re-ignited, propelling the spacecraft to an apogee of 11,400 miles. During descent, the service module engine accelerated the spacecraft to 25,000 miles per hour to simulate lunar reentry conditions. The command module successfully splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, 622 miles northwest of Hawaii.
This mission represented the pinnacle of engineering and innovation at the time and a critical milestone in NASA's journey to land humans on the Moon, proving that the Saturn V could safely deliver astronauts to space and back.

With the distribution of this photograph, humanity could behold, for the first time, a full-colour image of the entire Earth taken from deep space . This view offered mankind a profound new perspective on our planet, suspended in space and illuminated by the Sun. The photograph, looking west, shows Coastal Brazil, Atlantic Ocean, West Africa, Antarctica.
On November 9, 1967, Apollo 4 (Saturn 501) completed two Earth orbits before the third-stage booster fired, placing it into a vast elliptical orbit with a peak altitude of 9,767 nautical miles. This allowed the camera to capture the highest-altitude colour images of Earth ever taken, made possible by the first test flight of the enormous Saturn V rocket.

This historic photograph, captured by Lunar Orbiter 1, shows Earth rising above the Moon's horizon as seen from lunar orbit. The image presents a striking contrast between the barren, gray lunar surface in the foreground and the bright, luminous crescent of Earth against the blackness of space. Taken in 1966, it was the first photograph to reveal our planet from the perspective of lunar orbit, offering humanity a profound new view of Earth as a solitary oasis in the vastness of space.
This high resolution photograph (partial view of Lunar Orbiter frame I-102H) was photographed with the 610 mm lens from an altitude of 1198 km above the Moon over the 233-km Crater Pasteur (cut off at right) and the 173-km Crater Hilbert (cut off at left). The view is centered on a point of latitude: 14.68° S, longitude 104.34° E. The image was transmitted to the deep space tracking station near Madrid, Spain on 23 rd August 1966.
Lunar Orbiter 1 was the first U.S. spacecraft to orbit the Moon. Its mission was to obtain photographs of the Moon's surface. The 200 photos sent by each of the five Lunar Orbiters helped NASA select safe landing sites for the Apollo missions. Other objectives of the program were to collect data on the Moon's gravitational field, and study radiation and micrometeoroid flux in the vicinity of the Moon. *Boeing was NASA's main contractor for Lunar Orbiter

This beautiful photograph, one of Lunar Orbiter's standout accomplishments, provides an oblique view of one of the Moon's most prominent features. The high-resolution image offered Earth-based observers a close-up "witness" experience of the lunar landscape. At the time, Life Magazine hailed it as "The Picture of the Century."
The crater itself is among the most striking on the Moon. It is located in the eastern part of the Oceanus Procellarum region and was named in 1935 to honour Copernicus for his contributions to astronomy. Estimated to be around 800 million years old, the crater is famous for its bright rays-streaks of ejected material radiating outward-and is visible even with small telescopes from Earth.
The photo was taken from approximately 28.4 miles above the lunar surface on 23 November 1966 at 7:05 p.m. EST and was transmitted to the Deep Space Network station in Goldstone, California, on 28 November 1966.

The 363-foot-high vehicle generated a thrust of seven and one-half million pounds during liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A. The two astronauts are to spend 22 hours on the Moon's surface, including two and one-half hours outside the lunar module. They will gather sumples of lunar surface material and will deploy scientific experiments which will transit data about the lunar environment to Earth after the space pilots leave. They will rejoin Collins in the command module spacecraft for the return trip to Earth. Splashdown is to take place in the mid-Pacific at 195 hours, 15 minates ground elapsed time. The National Aeronautice and Space Administration directs the Apollo program.

This exceptionally rare colour frame captures the searing moment of atmospheric reentry as witnessed from inside the unmanned Gemini II spacecraft. Filmed through the hatch window by a 16 mm motion-picture camera, the image shows Earth's horizon engulfed by a brilliant envelope of ionised plasma as the capsule plunged back through the atmosphere.
At peak heating, friction generated extreme temperatures, causing the heat shield's ablative material to burn away-seen here in luminous white and greenish hues-safely dissipating the heat. Both visceral and poetic, the image stands as a rare visual record of one of spaceflight's most violent yet essential phases: the return home.
Launched on January 19, 1965, from Cape Kennedy's Launch Complex 19, Gemini II was an uncrewed suborbital test flight designed to validate the Gemini spacecraft's heat shield and reentry systems. At 6 minutes and 54 seconds after launch, the retrorockets fired, placing the spacecraft into a controlled reentry. The capsule safely parachuted into the Atlantic Ocean and successfully demonstrated the viability of the Gemini heat shield, paving the way for future crewed missions and the Apollo program.

Surrounded by the silence of a vacuum in one-sixth gravity, Aldrin inhabits a landscape untouched by life, hearing only the crackle of communications, the hum of his life-support system, and the rhythmic sound of his own breathing inside his helmet. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot, walks on the surface of the Moon near a leg of the Lunar Module during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity (EVA). Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, Apollo 11 commander, took this photograph with a 70mm lunar surface camera. The astronauts' boot prints are clearly visible in the foreground. While Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the Lunar Module Eagle to explore the Sea of Tranquility, astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Module Columbia in lunar orbit.
As they took their first steps on another world, Aldrin and Armstrong reflected on the experience: "I quickly discovered that I felt balanced comfortably upright only when I was tilted slightly forward. William Anders and his crewmates, James Lovell and Frank Borman, were the first humans to see Earth as a spherical planet suspended in space. The photograph, capturing nearly the entire Western Hemisphere-from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River and nearby Newfoundland down to Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America-was taken by Anders 4 hours and 36 minutes after launch. He used an 80 mm lens from a distance of approximately 27,000 km, producing a view that would captivate the world.

The composition unites four elements in a single frame: the astronaut, the flag, the Moon, and Earth-further echoed in the subtle reflection of Cernan and the flag in Schmitt's gold-plated visor. The flag appears to point directly toward the fragile disc of Earth, creating a powerful visual link between humanity's home planet and its farthest footsteps.
The South Massif rises beyond the scene, grounding the image in the dramatic topography of Taurus-Littrow. Cernan later reflected, "I captured the Earth, the Moon, the man, and the country all in one. I'm proud of this picture."

The first crescent Earthrise ever photographed by humans, showing our planet as a fragile arc of light rising above the Moon's barren horizon. This iconic image was later selected for the cover of Moon, Man's greatest adventure , a landmark 1970 publication celebrating the legacy of Apollo, cementing its place in the visual history of space exploration. This extraordinary wide-angle view was captured with the 60 mm lens and transparent glass reseau plate of the lunar surface Hasselblad Data Camera from the Lunar Module Intrepid , whose reaction control thruster is visible at lower right. The photograph was taken shortly after Acquisition of Signal (AOS) with Earth during Revolution 12. In this perfectly composed frame, the Lunar Module Intrepid soars above the Sea of Clouds west of Crater Ptolemaeus in this striking oblique photograph, taken with the 80mm lens. Captured after its separation from Yankee Clipper on orbit 13, Intrepid appears close to the surface but is actually orbiting approximately 60 nautical miles above the Moon.
This was one of Richard Gordon's final views of Intrepid before beginning his one-and-a-half-day solo flight around the Moon while Conrad and Bean prepared for landing. As the two spacecraft drifted apart, both crews marveled at the sight of their spacecraft above the lunar surface (see mission transcript).
"I made a small burn with the Command Module which allowed for separation from the LM, so we wouldn't collide later on. As I was drifting away, I grabbed the Hasselblad and took some pictures out the window. It was simply a matter of pointing the nose of the spacecraft at the Lunar Module." - Richard Gordon (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 80)

The First Lunar Self-Portrait
Pete Conrad captured this striking image of Alan Bean near Sharp Crater. It is often referred to as the first self-portrait on the Moon. This photograph clearly shows Bean holding a container of lunar soil in his right hand and wears a check-list on his left wrist to facilitate following a pre-planned pattern during the EVA with his Hasselblad camera mounted on his chest control unit. In Bean's visor, Conrad is reflected in sharp detail, creating a compelling and unintentional lunar self-portrait.

This rare photograph captures Jack Swigert and James Lovell inside the lifeboat Lunar Module Aquarius , desperately working on a last-minute fix that prevented carbon dioxide poisoning-a crisis that could have been fatal.
As Apollo 13 drifted through deep space, the astronauts faced a life-threatening buildup of CO₂ due to failing lithium hydroxide canisters. Mission Control engineers, working tirelessly on the ground, devised a crude but effective solution using only materials available onboard. CapCom Joe Kerwin guided Swigert and Lovell step by step as they built a contraption using a suit hose, duct tape, a plastic bag, and the CM's square canisters-famously known as "the mailbox."
In this extraordinary image, Swigert sits next to the taped-over double canister, holding one end of a suit nozzle, while Lovell manipulates the long hose. This ingenious fix, tested on Earth and then replicated in space, saved the crew from suffocation.
James Lovell on facing death in space: "I think that as long as we had an option, it [thoughts of confronting death] never really came up. [...] If there was a chance to get home, you work on the plus side; you don't work on the minus side." - James Lovell (Chaikin, Voices, p. 139) From the mission transcript when the photograph was taken: 113:55:59 Haise: Okay. Extending from that rock toward the camera is a vertical linear dark band which may be due to a one-minute partial obscuration of the landscape due to clouds or dust intervening between the sun and the surface. Associated with several of the rocks are apparent signs of wind transport of granular material. The large rock in the center is about 10 centimeters (4 inches) across and shows three rough facets. To its lower right is a rock near a smooth portion of the Martian surface probably composed of very fine-grained material. It is possible that the rock was moved during Viking 1 descent maneuvers, revealing the finer-grained basement substratum; or that the fine-grained material has accumulated adjacent to the rock. There are a number of other furrows and depressions and places with fine-grained material elsewhere in the picture. At right is a portion of footpad #2. Small quantities of fine grained sand and dust are seen at the center of the footpad near the strut and were deposited at landing. The shadow to the left of the footpad clearly exhibits detail, due to scattering of light either from the Martian atmosphere or from the spacecraft, observable because the Martian sky scatters light into shadowed areas.

Ham was trained at Holloman AeroMedical Research Laboratories and before the mission was known as "Number 65". The name, an acronym of the research facility, was given to him after the completion of the mission.
Ham, trained to perform simple tasks, such as pulling levers in response to lights, demonstrated that a living being could function in microgravity. He became the first primate to survive a 16-minute and 39-second sub-orbital flight. In the immediate aftermath of the spaceflight Ham was physically examined and found to be in good health. His successful performance proved that humans could survive and operate in space conditions, directly paving the way for Alan Shepard's and John Glenn's missions. His flight remains a landmark in space history, symbolizing the role of animals in preparing humans for space exploration

Unlike single-frame images, the 360° panorama captures the entire surroundings of the landing site, giving a complete sense of scale, terrain, and geological context. Surveyor VII's cameras could capture both detailed textures of rocks and soil and the broader landscape.
This allowed scientists and engineers to study crater features, boulders, and slopes in relation to each other - essential for planning future Moon landing missions, critical for crew safety and mission planning . This combination provided an unprecedented scientific dataset for selenography, far beyond what previous orbiters could deliver.
Historically, it marked one of the first times humans could "stand" on the Moon through a robotic perspective and look in every direction without leaving Earth.
The Surveyor programme conducted between 1966 and 1968was NASA's series of robotic lunar landers in the 1960s, designed to prepare for the Apollo human Moon landings. It's specific purpose was to gather detailed surface data. Surveyor VII was the last of NASA's robotic probes to be sent to the Moon in the early Moon exploration missions.

This iconic photograph was taken by Frank Borman through the spacecraft window using an 80 mm lens during the third Earthrise witnessed by humans, on Apollo 8's seventh orbit of the Moon. This sublime, vividly coloured photograph captures Ed White during the first American spacewalk, floating freely outside the Gemini 4 spacecraft. Suspended between the infinite blackness of space and the luminous blue curve of Earth, White's poised, almost effortless posture conveys both the exhilaration and serenity of human movement in zero gravity.
The image was taken by James McDivitt from his command pilot seat as Gemini 4 passed over New Mexico, facing southwest, using a NASA-modified Hasselblad 500C loaded with 70mm Eastman Kodak Ektachrome MS film. White's gold-plated visor reflects the Sun's brilliance, obscuring his face and transforming him into a universal figure of exploration rather than an individual portrait.
The looping, gold-taped tether coils elegantly through the frame, forming a sculptural counterpoint to White's body and subtly underscoring both the fragility and grace of humanity's presence in space. In his hand, he holds the Hand-Held Self-Maneuvering Unit-the "space gun" that allowed him to propel himself during the EVA-while far below, the Gulf of California and Baja California drift past, grounding this moment of freedom above Earth in geographic reality.
An enduring icon of the Space Age, the photograph embodies the moment when human exploration stepped decisively beyond the spacecraft and into outer space.
Reflecting on the experience, McDivitt recalled: "Ed was on a long string, so to speak, and when he'd get out to the end of the line, the tension in it slowed him down, then pulled him back toward the point where the spacecraft was fastened. As he was floating away from the spacecraft and as he moved around, I could look out the hatch and see him against the background of the Earth. That was rather impressive." Russell Schweickart captured this famous photograph of the first two-man EVA in NASA's space program, showing David Scott's stand-up EVA in the open hatch of the Command Module Gumdrop as it remained docked with the Lunar Module Spider in Earth orbit.
Schweickart took this image with the Hasselblad Super Wide camera and its 38mm lens, while performing his own spacewalk, standing on Spider's front porch with his feet secured in the gold-painted foot restraints known as "Golden Slippers." In the open hatch of Gumdrop, Scott is also photographing Schweickart with his Hasselblad camera.

It captures just a bit of the fantastic beauty of the Earth juxtaposed against the infinite black of space. The first rendezvous in space, performed by Gemini VI-A and Gemini VII in December 1965, allowed the crew to capture the incredible first photographs of spacecraft against the backdrop of our Home Planet. This image depicts the graceful dance performed by two small spacecraft in orbit around the blue Earth, about 160 miles below. The two spacecraft are just 37 feet apart here.
"We reviewed the pictures after we got back. When we saw their clarity - the lighting, the Sun angle, and everything - we realized that they described it very well. The mission will be there in history forever." -Thomas Stafford (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 50)
Stafford took the photograph with a Hasselblad 500C camera and its 80mm lens using Kodak SO 217 film with an ASA of 64.

Suspended beneath three main parachutes, the Command Module of Apollo 14 drifts toward the Pacific Ocean moments before splashdown on February 9, 1971. The safe recovery marked the successful conclusion of a ten-day lunar landing mission and NASA's return to the Moon following the near-disaster of Apollo 13.
The capsule splashed down at 3:04:39 p.m. (CST), approximately 765 nautical miles south of American Samoa. Astronauts Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell were retrieved by helicopter and flown to the prime recovery ship, USS New Orleans.
With this mission, Shepard-America's first astronaut-completed his long-awaited dream to journey to the Moon, while Mitchell and Roosa contributed to one of the most scientifically productive explorations of the lunar surface at Fra Mauro.

This Apollo 9 image taken by David Scott from Gumdrop shows Lunar Module Spider drifting upside-down over the cloud-covered Sahara and Atlantic, 145 miles below. At this moment, Spider was preparing for a 24.9-second descent engine burn to adjust its orbit, followed by a 24.4-second manoeuvre to circularize it, raising it 12 miles higher and roughly 100 miles away from Gumdrop . This critical test demonstrated the dual-spacecraft techniques that would later enable Apollo astronauts to land safely on the Moon.

This dramatic nighttime photograph shows an Atlas 8B missile illuminated on its launch stand at Cape Canaveral on September 11, 1958. The image highlights the scale and presence of a rocket originally developed as an intercontinental ballistic missile. Seen here in an early, pre-human spaceflight configuration, the Atlas missile represents the technological groundwork that enabled America's first orbital missions. The Atlas program would soon play a pivotal role in Project Mercury, the United States' first human spaceflight initiative. Most notably it carried John Glenn aboard Friendship 7 in 1962, when he became the first American to orbit Earth.

Often regarded as the most iconic portrait of astronauts in the history of space exploration, this photograph was taken in July 1960 by acclaimed LIFE magazine photographer Ralph Morse. Morse's close access to the astronauts was the result of deep mutual trust. So embedded was he in their daily lives that John Glenn affectionately referred to him as "the eighth astronaut." The photograph was captured during a suit fitting at Langley Air Force Base.

These photographs capture the spirit of America's early space program, when every exercise was pioneering. Alan Shepard and John Glenn are pictured during human centrifuge training at the Aviation Medical Laboratory in Johnsville, Pennsylvania; Gus Grissom is shown at NASA's Mercury headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
These astronauts embodied "the Right Stuff," a term coined by Tom Wolfe, symbolising the bravery, discipline, and technical mastery of the Mercury Seven.
On February 22, 1961, NASA announced that Shepard, Glenn, and Grissom had been selected for special training for Mercury-Redstone 3, the program's first manned flight. Shepard became the first American in space (Mercury-Redstone 3, May 5, 1961); Glenn the first American to orbit Earth (Mercury-Atlas 6, February 20, 1962); and Grissom (Mercury-Redstone 4, July 21, 1961) - who tragically lost his life in the Apollo 1 fire six years later-flew a suborbital mission between their flights.

Donald "Deke" Slayton was originally selected to pilot the second U.S. crewed orbital mission, but in 1962 he was grounded due to an irregular heart rhythm. Ten years later, in March 1972, he was cleared for flight and served as docking module pilot for the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). Slayton remained an influential figure at NASA until 1982, playing a key role in the early development of the Space Shuttle program.

Neil Armstrong is pictured beside an X-15 aircraft in October 1960. At the time, Armstrong was a research pilot for NASA's Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California. His expression is serious yet composed, reflecting the calm demeanor and focus required for such daring experimental missions. The X-15 program, in which Armstrong was a key participant, was crucial in gathering data on high-speed flight and atmospheric re-entry, paving the way for future manned space missions. During one of his flights on April 5, 1960, Armstrong reached an altitude of 179,000 feet-one of the highest ever achieved by the X-15-demonstrating the daring nature of the early flights that pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology.
Armstrong began his career with NASA's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), in 1955 at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio. Later, he transferred to the High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards, California, becoming both an aeronautical research scientist and a test pilot.
His colleagues recognized Armstrong's exceptional technical expertise and aptitude early on. X-15 pilot Milt Thompson once remarked that Armstrong was " the most technically capable of the early X-15 pilots," while fellow pilot Bill Dana noted, "he had a mind that absorbed things like a sponge." These qualities were foundational to his selection for the second group of NASA astronauts on September 17, 1962, long before his historic Apollo 11 mission made him a global icon.

Ham was trained at Holloman AeroMedical Research Laboratories and before the mission was known as "Number 65". The name, an acronym of the research facility, was given to him after the completion of the mission. Ham responded very well to training and became the first primate to survive a 16-minute and 39-second sub-orbital flight. During the flight Ham performed all his tasks up to his training expectations.

Mercury-Atlas 2 (MA-2) was an unmanned suborbital test flight of the Mercury spacecraft using the Atlas launch vehicle. The mission lifted off on February 21, 1961, at 9:12 a.m. (EST) from Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral. Flight objectives focused on the spacecraft's ability to withstand atmospheric re-entry under extreme thermal conditions, as well as the Atlas rocket's capability to achieve precise injection parameters.
The suborbital mission was successful, lasting 17 minutes and 56 seconds, reaching a maximum altitude of 114 miles (183 km) and a velocity of 13,227 mph (21,287 km/h). MA-2 represented a critical validation step as NASA moved closer to launching America's first astronauts into space.

Piloting the Mercury spacecraft Freedom 7, Alan Shepard became the first American in space. During the 15-minute suborbital flight, he experienced five minutes of weightlessness, reached speeds of 5,180 mph, climbed to an altitude of 116.5 miles, and splashed down 302 miles downrange in the Atlantic Ocean.

Captured by National Geographic photographer Dean Conger, this striking image records the helicopter recovery of Alan Shepard and the Freedom 7 capsule following America's first human spaceflight on May 5, 1961.
Broadcast live to millions and witnessed by hundreds of thousands gathered at the launch site, the recovery marked a defining moment in the Space Age-transforming a brief flight into a powerful national triumph. After a 15-minute suborbital flight, Freedom 7 came down approximately 302 miles downrange from Cape Canaveral, near Bermuda. Moments after splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, Shepard radioed, "Everything AOK... dye marker out" , signaling the successful conclusion of his historic mission.
In this photograph, a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter lifts both astronaut and spacecraft from the sea, returning them to the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain , where the recovery took just four minutes. Shepard later recalled the landing as controlled and calm, noting that rescue arrived so quickly he had barely begun post-landing checks when the helicopter was already calling him home.

On Level Three of the gantry at Pad 5, Virgil "Gus" Grissom pauses for a photograph as fellow astronaut John Glenn and a technician complete last-minute adjustments for launch inside Liberty Bell 7. The Mercury capsule sits atop its Redstone booster at Cape Canaveral, poised for the United States' second crewed spaceflight. The nearby cherry picker-positioned for a last-second extraction-underscores the ever-present risk faced by the Mercury astronauts.
Launched on 21 July 1961, the suborbital mission carried Grissom to an altitude of approximately 118 miles, further extending the limits of human spaceflight during the height of the Space Race. Drama followed on splashdown when Liberty Bell 7 flooded and sank moments after landing. Grissom was safely recovered, epitomising the resolve and resilience of NASA's early pioneers. Six years later, he would tragically lose his life in the Apollo 1 fire, cementing his legacy as one of the bravest figures of the Space Age.

These photographs capture one of the most dramatic episodes of the early American space program. Astronaut Gus Grissom, the second American to travel into space, narrowly escaped death following the failed helicopter recovery of his Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft after splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean. After Grissom exited the capsule, a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter lowered a harness and lifted him to safety. Moments later, the spacecraft flooded and sank beneath the surface (first photograph). In the second photograph, Grissom is welcomed by a visibly relieved crew aboard the USS Randolph.
The loss of Liberty Bell 7 was caused by the premature activation of its explosively actuated side hatch. Fortunately Grissom escaped immediately and was rescued within minutes of entering the water. Shortly after his evacuation, the capsule plunged to a depth of nearly 15,000 feet, leaving no in-flight photographs of the mission.

This striking close-up was taken during the countdown for the launch of the Saturn I space vehicle-designed by Wernher von Braun's team-on October 27, 1961, at Launch Complex 34 at Cape Canaveral. Standing 163 feet tall, the Saturn I booster marked a decisive leap in size and power over earlier rockets, paving the way for the monumental Saturn V Moon rocket.
This revolutionary launch vehicle was three times taller, required six times more fuel, and produced ten times more thrust than the Jupiter-C rocket that placed Explorer 1, America's first satellite, into orbit in 1958. At the time, NASA opted against "all-up" testing-where an entire system is tested at once-choosing instead an incremental approach. For the SA-1 mission, only the S-I first stage was live, while the upper stages were inert, water-filled dummies.
The uncrewed suborbital flight reached an altitude of 136.5 km and a downrange distance of 345.7 km, successfully verifying the aerodynamic and structural integrity of the Saturn I booster.

This rare and early colour photograph of Earth from orbit, showing cloud cover over the ocean, was captured through the window of the Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft carrying the chimpanzee Enos, and marks the infancy of space photography. The clock of the automatic-sequence camera-a Maurer 220G equipped with a 75 mm lens and loaded with GAF Super Anscochrome T-100 Superior ASA 64 color reversal film-is visible at the lower right. During the flight, the spacecraft reached an apogee of 147.5 miles and a perigee of 99.6 miles.
