ITALIAN, 19TH CENTURY
Modelled after the Righetti model without supporting tree trunks, on polished black marble bases

The original Centaurs were discovered during excavations (conducted by Monsignor Furietti) at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli on the outskirts of Rome in 1736. They were acquired by Pope Clement XIII from Furietti's heirs and placed in the Capitoline Museum. Bronze reproductions were made by famous 18th century bronze foundries such as those established by Righetti and Zofolli to cater for demand from Grand Tourists. Their decorative appeal to the Georgians was enhanced by the fact that they were a classical, symmetrical pair.
An 18th example from the Righetti workshop can be seen in the V&A collection. Accession number: 979-1882

A MARBLE PROFILE RELIEF PANEL DEPICTING SIR JOHN DAVIS (1560-1625)
EARLY TO MID 17TH CENTURY
Inscribed in ink to reverse in later hand " Bere Court Chapel, *** Miss Breca**"

Sir John Davis settled in Bere Court, Pangbourne West Berkshire in 1613. This followed his conviction, death and sentence and subsequent pardon following his involvement in the Duke of Essex's rebellion of 1601.
Davis was a follower of the Earl of Essex, Robert Devereux, who knighted him at Cadiz in Spain in 1596 and it had been suggested that this panel depicted Devereux himself. However, it would seem to be an unwise and unlikely memorial for Davis to have had on display, even in his private chapel. The public memorial to Davis and his two wives is in the nearby Pangbourne church of St James the Less. Reading Museum holds in its collections an oil portrait on panel of Sir John, with a physiognomy, beard and hair not dissimilar from this panel (REDMG: 1945.141.1).

Set on a cylindrical red and black marble base, foundry mark Nelli Roma
69cm high overall, the base 13cm diameter
Alessandro Nelli's foundry was situated at 43, Via Luciano Manara, Rome and covered an area of some 5000 square metres. Nelli had two retail outlets in Rome from 1880 to 1900, one at 139, 140 and 140A Via del Babuino, and the other at 58, Via Santa Chiara.
This model was illustrated in the 1899 Nelli Foundry catalogue. Item No. 245 "Mercure de Giambologna". We are grateful to Steve Parlanti of Parlanti Bronze Foundries for his assistance with cataloguing this.
Condition Report:
bronze- slightly crusty dirty surface- wear and paler patina to extremities (elbows, feet, base rim and hands) from handling and age. Small scratches to right thigh, left shin, left elbow and torso. sits on the base- but is not fixed to it- current rod from centre of base is not threaded whereas hole to underside of bronze is. base faintly inscribed to top- illegible, small edge frits and chips

This bronze of a rearing horse is related to a bronze group of a horse and rider which is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. The Budapest bronze has, since the early 20th century, been associated with Leonardo da Vinci and his studies for two unexecuted monuments, one to Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, and the other to General Gian Giacomo Trivulzio (Balogh, loc. cit.). Additionally comparison has been made with a sheet by Leonardo da Vinci in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle (no.12331) representing his preliminary thoughts for the Battle of Anghiari fresco, recently re-discovered in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence.
Other variant examples of the horse exist in bronze, including one in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and another in the Hunt Museum in Limerick, although the Metropolitan bronze is currently thought to be a 19th or early 20th century cast.

A VIENNA TWO HANDLED 'CAPTAIN COOK ANTARCTIC' CABINET CUP 19TH CENTURY The urn shaped body with two gilt loop handles and raised on a gilt slender circular stem and foot decorated with band of leaves, the upper section painted with a continuous Antarctic scene after William Hodges of Commander James Cook's HMS Resolution at anchor among ice bergs and four row boats, with the crew collecting ice and one figure shooting a rifle at polar bear, with painted mark " Eisinseln entdeckt den a 9 Januar 1773 " (Ice islands discovered 9th January 1773), impressed 832 and other numbers 12.5cm high The scene depicted on this Vienna two-handled cup is after a drawing by Captain Cook's official artist, William Hodges. It relates to an action on 9 th January 1773 recorded in Cook's 'A Voyage Towards the South Pole and Round the World 1772-1775':
" Saturday 9. But, at four o'clock in the morning, finding ourselves to leeward of this ice, we bore down to an island to leeward of us; there being about it some loose ice, part ow which we saw break off. There we bought to; hoisted out three boats; and in about five or six hours, took up as much ice as yielded fifteen tons of good fresh water. The pieces we took were hard, and solid as a rock; some of them were so large, that we were obliged to break them with pick-axes, before they could be taken into the boats." Isidore-Jules Bonheur was born on the 15th May, 1827 in Bordeaux, France, and was the third of four children of Christine (1797-1833) and Raymond Bonheur (1796-1849). Christine was a musician and Raymond a drawing tutor and painter and all their children went on to forge successful artistic careers, Isidore and Rosa as sculptors and painters, Juliette and Auguste as animal and landscape painters. Isidore-Jules Bonheur trained under his father alongside his sister Rosa Bonheur and his first submission to the Paris Salon in 1848 was a sculpture executed in plaster and a painting of the same subject: "Cavalier Africain Attaqué par un Lion". Although he is known mostly for his sculpture, he was a prolific and talented painter of animals and landscapes.
As with this example, the majority of his work was cast in his lifetime by his brother-in-law, Hippolyte Peyrol, husband to Isidore's sister, Juliette Bonheur. Peyrol operated his own foundry and cast the majority of Rosa and Isidore's work which are distinguished by their exceptional casting and finely chased and patinated presentation.
As well as exhibiting at The Salon for over 50 years, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1875 and 1876. Recognizing the likely market engendered by British sporting culture, he modelled numerous hunting groups and equine subjects.

This work is from Thornycroft's Teucer and depicts the stepbrother of Ajax, acknowledged as the best archer among the Greeks of Troy. As with his work The Mower (1882/1884), the model for the work was Orazio Cervi (1854-1942), an Italian labourer and life model renowned for his 'perfectly proportioned physique'. Thornycroft had written ' Every workman's face I meet in the street interests me, and I feel sympathy with the hard-handed toilers & not with the lazy do nothing selfish 'upper-ten. '
The clay model for this work was begun early in November 1880 and the full-size plaster was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881 (1495). The bronze figure was exhibited the following year at the R.A and the contemporary critic Miss Helen Zimmern wrote:
" There has rarely been such unanimity of applause as greeted this statue. . . it is very easy to admit that recent times have shown us nothing in England to compare with it ."
Individual cast sections of this work are relatively rare. Perhaps the best known example is the bronze head now held in the Leighton House Museum (Gifted by Agatha Thornycroft, née Cox (1865-1958 the artist's wife - Accession number LH0319), the 35cm high bronze was probably cast by the Herbert Singer foundry in Frome and is signed to the cast "Hamo Thornycroft SC". The work is slightly more idealised in form with a smoother more worked finish.
It is also recorded that a large bronze head for the statue (14in. high) was lent by Lady Thornycroft to the R.A. memorial exhibition in 1927 and was presented by her to the Athenaeum 1939. The Athenaeum have confirmed that the head is no longer in their collection. At the time of cataloguing, the only other comparable example of bronze Teucer head is listed in the Tate Museum description of the full size Teucer bronze (Presented by the Trustees of the Chantrey Bequest 1882- N01751): " A small head of Cervi, 13 in. high, belongs to his widow (Agatha Thornycroft, née Cox (1865-1958)". This work seems to be currently untraced.
This lot is unsigned and bears comparison with the later torso and head bronze held in the Royal Academy Collection which was cast from their own example (Given by Colonel Malcolm Donaldson F.R.C.S. 1948- object number 03/1827).

After debuting at the Paris Salon in 1870, Emile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin became well-known for his taste for 'Orientalist' figures, Accommodating the taste of the wealthier and better travelled buyers, he specialised in producing models of figures from 'exotic' far-flung regions: courtesans from Japan, women and men from Turkey and Algiers, hunters and falconers from the Middle East and women from India and Persia.
This figure of Femme Indienne was first modelled in 1872 and, after acquiring the rights to produce this model and two other pairs of sculptures, Barbedienne offered this sculpture in their 1886 catalogue as " Deux Femmes, Indienne et Persane " depicting both an Indian and a Persian female lifting torcheres in their upraised arms. They were offered in a choice of sizes: 200cm, 120cm, 95cm and 78cm high. An example of the largest version of the pair were installed to flank the entrance to the Barbedienne estate and were sold in 1984 at the Hotel des Ventes for 530,000 francs.
Condition Report:
Formerly electrified and with vacant holes from switches and prior mountings to upper right arm, base and to light stem. Traces of wiring visible to light section but the whole will require rewiring if wanted for domestic use.
Probably repaired to base of top central stem which is slightly darker in colour. No glass globes.
Surface of bronze with small remnants of previous more golden finish. Sone wear and scuffs notably to her left and hand and large scratch to base.
Her right arm with construction joint to upper end- this has worked loose- probably from handling/rewiring and has small pin which may be original- and later screws mismatched which are not- will benefit greatly from remedial repinning
Pedestal probably formerly painted- now stripped and with some rust from damp storage. Hole to top of one side presumably from prior wiring

Moritz Geiss championed the use of zinc for casting sculpture at his manufactory in Berlin and produced furniture and household metalware designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel as well as sculpture after August-Karl-Edouard Kiss and Erdmann Theodor Kalide. A number of life-size copies of popular statues were displayed by Geiss at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchased eleven of these to decorate the gardens of Osborne House where they still reside: Urania, Euterpe, L'Adorant, Ganymede, Venus of Capua, Meleager, Bacchus, Venus de Medici, Ceres, Medea and Venus d'Arles.

It has been suggested that this impressive figure could also be titled "Ruth" in reference to the biblical story. However, the iconography of the harvest emblematic of success, fertility and the season of Autumn was also commonly found in Italian workshops in Florence and Rome at this period.
