A VICTORIAN 18 INCH TERRESTRIAL FLOOR-STANDING LIBRARY GLOBE

The sphere applied with two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores incorporating trade label inscribed To the Rt. Honourable, SIR JOSEPH BANKS BAR. K.B., President of the Royal Society, This New British Terrestrial Clobe, Containing all the latest Discoveries and Communications, from the most, correct and authentic Observations and Surveys, to the year 1840, by Capt'n Cook and more recent Navigators. Engraved from, an accurate Drawing by Mr. Arrowsmith, Geographer, Respectfully Dedicated, by his most obedient h'ble servants, W. & T.M. Bardin, over further applied label inscribed Bate, London to the North Pacific, with fully graduated equatorial and ecliptic rings and the Pacific with THE ANELEMA scale, the oceans with many explorer's tracks and Monsoon indications, the land masses with nation states faintly colour tinted and principal cities labelled, topographic features labelled and also pictured, Antarctica with no land showing and the most southerly point annotated 14 (degrees) 15 (minutes) most southern Lat. Of, Mr. Weddell 20 th Feb'y 1823, the sphere pivoted via the polar axis within a brass meridian circle divided for degrees and with brass hours circles to both poles, set within printed paper horizon ring annotated with compass points and degrees in both directions, Zodiac and calendar scales, in a stand with four down-curved quadrant supports cradling the globe over baluster turned upright issuing three out-swept supports each terminating with down-curved tapered feet and brass castors.

William Bardin (1783-98) was a freeman of the Leatherseller's Company who starting making globes in around 1780. His first globes were 9 and 12 inch diameter published in collaboration with Gabriel Wright on 1st January 1782. Wright was a mathematical instrument maker who had previously worked for Benjamin Martin who, in turn, had acquired the plates of Senex's celebrated globes from James Ferguson. William's son, Thomas Marriott, is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as a globe maker apprenticed to his father in 1783, with whom he went into partnership in 1790. Bardin and Son initially worked from 4 Hind Court, Fleet Street, London before moving to 16 Salisbury Square in 1975. William Bardin died in 1795 leaving the business in the hands of Thomas Marriott. The firm was taken-on by Thomas's daughter, Elizabeth Marriott, after his death in 1820 and then by her husband, S.S. Edkins. on their marriage in 1832. They took a son into partnership in 1848 and the business continued until shortly after S.S. Edkins's death in 1853.
The applied trade label will almost certainly be for Robert Brettell Bate who is recorded by Clifton, as working from Poultry, London 1808-42 and then 33 Royal Exchange 1846-47. Bate was known as a maker of all types of instrument however was celebrated for his nautical instruments including marine barometers and latterly was appointed Instrument-maker to Her Majesty s Honourable Boards if Excise and Customs.

The highly regarded Newton family of globe makers was established by John Newton who initially trained under Thomas Bateman before setting-up business at 128 Chancery Lane, London in 1783. He moved to 97 Chancery Lane in 1803 and then again to number 66 in 1817, where he entered into partnership with his son, William, the following year. The engineer Miles Berry joined the business in 1831 forming the partnership 'Newton, Son and Berry' which lasted until 1841, when the firm passed to the ownership of William Newton's eldest son, William Edward Newton (1818-1879).

A REGENCY LACQUERED BRASS AND MAHOGANY FLOOR-STANDING TWO-INCH REFRACTING TELESCOPE
TUTHER, LONDON, CIRCA 1825.
The 45.5 inch mahogany bound tube with brass cylindrical shade for the objective opposing single draw signed Tuther, 221 Holborn, London fitted with a shuttered eyepiece, mounted via a universal pivot joint onto a rotating column-turned upright over three tall hinged mahogany legs terminating with pointed feet.
The tube 150.5cm (59.25ins) maximum long extended, the telescope on stand approximately 180cm (71ins) high.
John Tuther is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as working from several addresses in London 1816-27, including 221 High Holborn 1822-27.

A RARE GEORGE III BRASS 'MOST IMPROVED' TYPE COMPOUND MONOCULAR MICROSCOPE
THOMAS RIBRIGHT, LONDON, EARLY 19 th CENTURY
The body tube signed THO'S RIBRIGHT, LONDON to exterior and with knurled screw rack-and-pinion focus adjustment for the insert fitted with eyepiece opposing objective assembly, set via a threaded bracket and slider with locking screw onto a triangular section limb over fixed stage incorporating tool apertures, further conforming slider and terminating with support for the pivoted plano-concave mirror, the whole raised via an axis pivot joint set behind the stage onto an architectural column uprights fitted with a moulded screw collar issuing three hinged tapered supports at the base, the microscope packed by reversing and folding the support assembly into the original horizontal mahogany box, incorporating fitted interior to take accessories including five additional objectives, a Lieberkuhn reflector, stage mounted condenser lens, forceps, three bone sliders, a sprung slider clamp and a frog plate,
The instrument 54cm (21.25ins) high approx. assembled, the box 41.5cm (16.25ins) wide, 16cm (6.25ins) deep, 9cm (3.5ins) high.
Thomas Ribright junior is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers as apprenticed to George Ribright in 1768 with whom he went into partnership at 40 Poultry, London in 1778. George Ribright died in 1783 leaving the business to Thomas who continued there up until around 1802, after which he is recorded as working from 20 Gloucester St., Queen's Square, London. He retired in 1806 and received charity from the Spectaclemakers' Company until his death in 1811.
The form of the current lot appears to based on a the 'Most Improved Microscope' design made popular by W. and S. Jones after they acquired the stock and rights of George Adams junior in around 1795. Although the general design is often credited to them it was actually first outlined by Adams in his 1787 publication Essays on The Microscope .
Condition Report:
The tube is generally in very good original condition with the rack-and-pinion focus operating as it should. The smaller diameter objective tube has a noticeable dent as well as some very slight denting. The objective lens assembly has dust/dirt but instrument will focus and all lens threads etc. appear sound. The stage assembly is in good original condition, the intermediate sub-stage slider appears to be lacking its fitment (no condensor mirror present with the instrument that will fit the aperture). The plano-concave mirror is free from any problematic foxing. The T flange that forms the mount for the instrument onto the pivot joint is missing two of its four securing screws. The stand is generally in very good original condition. Instrument retains old lacquer finish but with overall wear and moderate oxidation. The box is in good original condition, a locating block is split/detached but present and there are a few vacant slots for accessories that are no longer present (three shallow baize-line apertures). The exterior of the box has a very slight shrinkage crack and a small veneer edge chip to lid and some slight wear to the edge of the base board towards the front right-hand corner. Otherwise faults are limited to relatively minor bumps, scuffs and other age-related blemishes, surface is essentially untouched and hence is currently a little flat/dull but colour is good. There is no key for the lock but both hook catches are present.

The pivoted frame with circular anchor-weight fitted to an adjustable slider against an engraved ratio scale to one of the long outer arms opposing fixed pencil holder to the other, the centre fitted with a pair subsidiary pivoted arms applied with further adjustable slider against a similar scale for the tracing stylus and signed PARKES & SON, BIRMINGHAM to upper surface, the underside fitted with ivory wheel castors to each junction/terminal, in original tapered mahogany box with tracing pointer and one other accessory.
The box 87cm (34.25ins) long, 16.5cm (6.25ins) deep, 9.5cm (3.75ins) high.

UNSIGNED, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 18 th CENTURY
With 4.75 inch circular hand-annotated card disc with month of the year aperture over a polychrome decorated half-sunburst mask motif incorporating brass inset radial 'rays' to the right-hand half of the centre, set next to a list of the days of the week and adjacent sector revealing an adjustable scale of seven consecutive dates-of-the month interrupting the green brass zig-zag inset panel and foliate trail painted outer border, contained within a circular glazed double cavetto moulded ebonised wood frame with the back panel cut-away at the apex to allow adjustment of the concentric card discs.

A VICTORIAN GILT BRASS ANEROID POCKET BAROMETER COMPENDIUM WITH ALTIMETER, THERMOMETER AND COMPASS
UNSIGNED, LATE 19th CENTURY
The circular silvered register with steel pointer for reading against the rotating outer scale calibrated 0 to 8000 for altitude in FEET divided into fifty foot increments, and inner scale similarly divided and calibrated for barometric inches annotated RAIN, CHANGE, FAIR, over Compensated to centre, in cylindrical frosted gilt brass case with knurled collar for the rotating altimeter scale, suspension post and bow to top, the rear with small glazed enamel-dial compass incorporating rose annotated with sixteen cardinal points and locking lever to the pointer, within curved mercury tube Fahrenheit thermometer to circumference; with original leather travelling case with hinged cover to each side.
The instrument 4.7cm (1.85ins) diameter, 2.3cm (0.875ins) deep; the case 6cm (2.375ins) diameter, 4cm (1.5ins) deep.

Condition Report:
Barometer responds to change in pressure (has been bag tested), the dial is in very good original condition and of even colour throughout. The compass is in working order with no visible faults to the enamel dial. The thermometer in in working condition although the scale has patchy discolouration/tarnishing. The case is in original condition but with noticeable patchy oxidation. The leather covered outer case is in sound condition with noticeable faults limited some slight lifting to the covering and patches applied over the clasp buttons.

AN INTERESTING TOILE PEINTE WALL BAROMETER WITH POSSIBLE ROYAL PROVENANCE

The tube applied to a rectangular silvered scale calibrated in Fahrenheit and annotated with observations FH, BH, SH, T and F beneath engraved signature Haas, LONDON to upper margin, the rectangular case formed from tin plated steel finished with black japanning incorporating panel over the thermometer bulb polychrome and gilt painted with crown over G III R cypher, the back panel extended and pierced with key-hole shaped apertures for wall mounting both to upper and lower margins, the rear of the case applied with a manuscript paper label inscribed in ink This Thermometer hung in the small private Drawing Room of Hid late Majesty King George 3 rd at Weymouth and was purchased at the sale that took place there on Friday 21 st July 1820 and afterwards presented to ....Powell Esq'r. ...

Jacob Bernhard Haas is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as working from Bull Yard, St Ann's Court, Soho, London, 1789-99.
The inscription to the rear of the present lot suggests that the thermometer formed part of King George III possessions housed at Gloucester Lodge, Weymouth which was built in 1780. The King became a regular visitor during the summer months particularly from 1789 in order to convalesce from bouts of the mental illness from which he was known to suffer. Indeed he attended every year from 1791-1805 except 1793 and 1803, and was particularly fond on bathing, riding, walking and sailing. He also engaged with local residents in a relatively informal manner particularly farmers and other landowners which contributed to his nickname 'Farmer George'. Gloucester Lodge was extended in around 1850 and the interiors sadly gutted by fire in 1927.
Condition Report:
The thermometer tube is broken/missing and the lower part of the scale has red pigment staining. The tube column is intact and the silvering to the scale otherwise generally in good condition albeit with dirt residue mostly towards the top edge and slight oxidation. The glass is broken along the lower margin and of incorrect arched profile at the top hence appears to be an older mis-matched replacement. The top cap to the case is missing otherwise case is in sound original unrestored condition with faults limited to edge wear and some flaking to the finishes.

With cavetto cornice over rectangular silvered Vernier scale, calibrated in barometric inches and with slider to the right-hand side opposing the usual observations to the left, the upper margin engraved HEATH & WING LONDON, flanked by scroll carved corbels abutting the cornice, over exposed tube to the caddy moulded trunk veneered with the grain angled upwards from the centre, over rounded base incorporating scroll carved ears and applied with a hemispherical 'orb' shaped cistern cover.

The partnership between the celebrated instrument maker, Thomas Heath, and his former apprentice, Tycho Wing, is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as operating from several addresses in London 1751-73 including 'Hercules and Globe' next door to Fountain Tavern, Strand in 1759 and Near the Savoy Gate in the Strand in 1771. They were succeeded by Thomas Newman.

A RARE GEORGE III SCOTTISH CHEVRON-EDGED MAHOGANY MERCURY STICK BAROMETER
JOHN RUSSELL, FALKIRK, CIRCA 1790
The chevron banded case with swan neck pediment above arch-glazed door enclosing fine engraved silvered brass scale with arched banner titled BAROMETER over Vernier scale calibrated in barometric inches to the right and opposing the usual weather observations to the left, the lower margin signed Rufsell, Falkirk , the trunk applied with full-height half column enclosing the tube flanked by forty-five degree angle-grain veneers and chevron angles, over a slightly domed oval cistern cover.

The Dr. Castle Collection of barometers and other weather instruments. Purchased at Bonhams, London sale of FINE CLOCKS Wednesday 7 th July 2016 (lot 2) for £1,690.
John Russell is recorded in Goodison, Nicholas ENGLISH BAROMETERS 1680-1860 as settling in Falkirk in 1770 where he set up shop opposite the top of Kirk Wynd. He proved to be a very talented watchmaker who was subsequently appointed maker to the Prince of Wales in 1811. In addition to making watches and barometers he advertised as being able to supply musical clocks, organs, microscopes and thermometers. Of his barometers his best known models are a type similar to the present lot, but also fitted with a hygrometer and thermometer (following the specification of Benjamin Martin's 'weather glasses'), and his landmark 'royal' barometers - which are essentially an early design of wheel barometer with subsidiary dials allowing changes in pressure to be obtained down to increments of 0.001 of an inch. John Russell died in 1817 and was succeeded by William Dobbie who was known to have produced a few barometers to Russell's designs.
Condition Report:
Instrument is filled with mercury but has a very small amount of air as the column will stop around 5mm short of the top of the tube when the instrument is inclined slightly. The scale is in good condition with fairly bright and relatively even colouring to the silvering. The case presents very well however the pediment has been restored and there is a small veneer patch repair to glazed aperture surround. Visible faults are otherwise visible faults are otherwise limited to a small stain to the lower part of the right hand-side and a few very minor age related bumps, scuffs, shrinkage and wear.

Peter Dollond is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1680-1860 as born 1730 and died 1820. He was the son of John Dollond, a Huguenot silk weaver and started business as an optician in 1750. He was joined by his father in 1752 until his death in 1761, and then by his brother, John, until his death in 1804. The family business was continued by Peter Dollond's nephew, George Huggins, who changed his surname to Dollond. George Dollond became instrument maker to William IV and Queen Victoria, exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and died 1856. The firm became one of the largest makers and suppliers of scientific and optical instruments and continued trading under various guises throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

With concave-sided upstand and cavetto cornice over rectangular bow-glazed silvered brass Vernier scale calibrated in barometric inches and with slider to the right-hand side opposing the usual observations to the left, the upper margin engraved Cary, LONDON , the ebony line-edged flame figured mahogany trunk of the same bowed profile incorporating Vernier setting square beneath the cavetto throat moulding, the base with turned ebonised half vase cistern cover flanked by canted angles inlaid with ebony baton motifs, over cavetto moulded underside incorporating level adjustment square.

The celebrated Cary family business of scientific instrument and globe makers was established by John Cary at Johnson's Court, Fleet Street, London in 1782 moving to a new address at 'Corner of Arundel Square', Strand the following year. He was primarily an engraver of maps, charts and globes who moved again in 1783 to 188 Strand. By 1791 he had entered into what appeared to be a relatively casual partnership with his brother, William; this partnership lasted until circa 1816 by which time William and John Cary had moved again to 181 Strand before finally settling in 86 St. James in 1820. The following year he was succeeded by his sons, John (II) and George Cary, who continued from the firm's 181 Strand address until 1851/2 when the business was acquired by Henry Gould.

H. McQueen and Company are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as makers of marine barometers with sympiesometers working form 63 Clyde Place, Glasgow circa 1840-60.
The sympiesometer was invented by Alexander Adie of Edinburgh in 1818 and is essentially an improved version of Robert Hooke's thermobarometer which was subject of a paper presented to the Royal Society in 1668. The instrument works by having a syphon tube filled with liquid open to the air at one end and with trapped gas at the other (sulphuric acid and hydrogen were used in later sympiesometers). As barometric pressure increases the liquid will be forced down the tube causing the gas to be compressed, resulting in a change in level in the tube; however the volume of the gas changes with temperature so before a reliable reading can be taken the instrument would first need to be calibrated by adjusting the position of the movable barometer scale in relation to the temperature scale behind to reflect the reading provided by the thermometer. The sympiesometer was conceived by Adie as an alternative to the mercury marine barometer as it was smaller and believed to be less susceptible to the motion of a vessel at sea.

With steel framed large going barrel movement set behind a glass panel beneath the vertical silver and gold painted cast iron bed applied with an opposing pair of 6.75 inch tuned steel combs, the centre with arbor applied with a respective series of star wheels for engaging with the pierced projections in the interchangeable revolving steel tune disc, secured over the mechanism by a pivoted latched arm and driven by a toothed wheel engaging with perforations to the rim of the disc at the base, the upper section of the iron bed with Britannia and Lion cast surmount, the case with turned finials and balustrade gallery over ogee cornice and fretwork frieze to entablature, the front with a pair of book-matched veneered crossbanded and line inlaid doors applied with Britannia and Royal Warrant transfers, the inside of each ebonised and inscribed The Britannia to the left opposing B.H.A., Made in St. CROIX, SWITZERLAND to the left, the right-hand side with winding arbor and PLAY/STOP towards the lower edge, on cavetto moulded skirt base; now resting on a later oak two cabinet enclosing the discs over turned feet; with twenty discs.
The cabinet 110cm (39.5ins) high, 63.5cm (25ins) wide, 30cm (11.75ins) deep; the cabinet on stand 125cm (49.25ins) high, 54cm (21.25ins) deep overall.
Barnett Henry Abrahams was born in 1839, he was initially a dealer in music boxes but by 1857 had emigrated to Switzerland where he founded a musical box manufacturing business. In 1895 he established himself in Sainte-Croix and started to manufacture disc music boxes, many of which were for the British market and hence labelled 'The Britannia'. The business had a London address at 133/135 Houndsditch and was continued after Abrahams death in 1902 by his sons until around 1915.
Condition Report:
Mechanism is complete, intact and essentially in original working condition however is generally in dirty/neglected condition hence requires a clean/service. The combs have two broken teeth and two more missing their tips. The case is generally in good original condition with good complete transfers. The ebonised back panel has a surface blemish to the right of the steel frame and the left-hand door has some slight shrinkage cracking. Faults are otherwise limited to relatively minor bumps, scuffs and other age-related blemishes. The later stand is not well made and the front doors have bowed/come loose hence is probably best dispensed with. The discs are generally in useable condition but with surface rusting.

THE ORGAN PROBABLY FRIEBURG AREA, EARLY 19 th CENTURY, NOW FITTED WITH AN ENGLISH MOVEMENT AND DIAL
The substituted English four pillar eight-day rack and gong striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum, now fitted with a 12 inch circular brass dial with subsidiary seconds dial and scroll-border engraved blanked-off calendar aperture to the matted centre, within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers, Arabic five minutes to outer track and engraved W'm Carter, Ampthill to lower margin, with scroll pierced steel hands, mounted on later blocks onto the front of the substantial wooden-framed organ movement, constructed with an upper tier comprising a 17.25 inch staple-pinned wooden cylinder of 6.5 inch diameter configured to play a choice of eight tunes every hour on an arrangement of eighty-two pipes via twenty-eight lifters, over lower tier with gear train to the left of the clock movement and large bellow assembly behind, the exterior of the mechanism with tune selection adjustment levers to right-hand side opposing three stop sliders the left, in a case probably of English construction with shallow break-ach cavetto moulded pediment over fluted frieze and a rectangular carved fretwork panel decorated with a musical trophy, above hinged convex glazed cast brass bezel set within panel moulded spandrels flanked by full height line inlaid pilasters, the sides with panelled doors, the full width trunk fronted with a line-bordered flame-figured panel door flanked by conforming pilasters, the base with moulded waist over further raised mouldings forming a geometric panel flanked by further pilasters, on shallow moulded skirt.

UNSIGNED, PROBABLY GENEVA, CIRCA 1900
With U-shaped brass frame fitted with brass handwheel and bevel gears driving a 4.75 inch faceplate applied with three adjustable 'dogs', opposing tailstock fitted via slider onto the integral steel bed with X and Y screw adjusting tool post and rest to further sliders between, now mounted via the tongue at the base and a substantial brass angle bracket onto a wooden plinth.
The frame 38.5cm (15.25ins) long; 46cm (18ins) approx. long overall, 19cm (7.5ins) wide, 23.5cm (9.25ins) high.
A closely related mandrel is illustrated in an 1894 advert for GRIMSHAW & BAXTER, 33 & 35 GOSWELL ROAD, LONDON reproduced in Crom, Theodore R. Horological Shop Tools 1700-1900 page 533 (Figure 1056).

Of standard form with work held vertically on a back-and forth sliding frame between poppets, opposing split threaded cutter and hinged tail to facilitate the continuous passing of a toothed wheel work piece, driven via a sequence of pulleys by a four-spoke hand wheel with serpentine crossings, on tapered brass foot secured to walnut baseboard.

The first section with U-shaped headstock frame enclosing graduated pulleys driving the spindle currently fitted with a 3 inch brass mandrel faceplate incorporating three steel dogs, set on a 11.5 inch D-section bed and with tongue for the bench mounting post to underside, the second section with similar headstock but incorporating index pin holes to the pulley rim, set on a 9.75 inch bed opposing slider with tool rest and a tailstock, with a series of accessories for turning and polishing as well as twenty-three 6mm split collets, a 2.5 inch three-jaw chuck and a similar five-jaw radius chuck, most of the components stamped Lorch and contained as a set in a fitted teak box with panelled lid, in addition to the cased set further accessories include a slider with fine screw X/Y positioning and 0-20 degree rotation lock-off, a remote pulley assembly complete with drilled flange for bench mounting, and a conforming bench post for the lathe assembly itself, together with four original Lorch trade catalogues and an illustrated supply list for PROUT & ORR LIMITED, 35 DOCK STREET, HULL , (qty).
The teak box 39cm (15ins) wide, 25cm (9.75ins) deep, 15cm (6ins) high.
Lorch, Schmidt and Company were specialist manufacturers of precision lathes and related tools founded in Frankfurt 1885. The present box set would appear to conform to Lathe Combination IXb 'righthand' illustrated in catalogue D No. 19 included in the present lot.

The sector pivoted at the base and engraved with divisions numbered up to 106 beneath locking arc incorporating screw adjustment, the pivot end stamped G.P.P. ; the measuring calipers each with fine-biting jaws and nearby pivot opposing amplified arc scale; the poising tools of 'figure-of-eight' design, together with three brass folding rulers, a protractor, a rule, a steel pinion sizer, six steel C-shaped callipers, five sprung pivot compass/calipers and three various slide calipers, (38).
The sector 33cm (13ins) long, 11cm (4.25ins) wide at the locking end; the largest caliper 18cm (7ins) long, 11.5cm (4.5ins) wide at the arc.

A COLLECTION OF 'DENT'S PORTABLE TELL-TALE' TIMEPIECES WITH FACTORY TOOLING AND PARTS

Including thirteen timepieces of varying dates and with serial numbers spanning from 39622 to 79277 , each in differing states of repair with going barrel movement incorporating shaped platform lever escapement regulated by sprung monometallic balance, the rotating dial plates overlaid with removable circular paper Arabic numeral hour discs, set behind locked covers each with porthole showing the hour beneath a slot to allow for a point in time to be recording by inserting a punch, the fronts variously inscribed RECORDING CLOCK over DENT triangular trademark along with serial number and respective addresses of the firm at the time of manufacture, together with three circular cast iron receptacles for fixed location punch stamping, two tooled steel punch assemblies for producing movement sub plates, a large quantity of printed paper hour discs, a significant quantity of escapement components including jewelled pallets and endstone plates, mainsprings, screws, bushes wheels etc., also included is a pair of steel punch stamp assemblies for producing hands for an unrelated design of timepiece, (qty).

Previously the property of a former workman of E. Dent and Company.
Edward John Dent was a talented horologist who at the age of 17 transferred his apprenticeship from the trade of tallow chandler to watchmaking under the charge of Edward Gaudin in 1807. By 1817 he had become well known as a watch and clockmaker receiving commissions from the Admiralty for a 'Standard Astronomical Clock' and pocket chronometers for the Colonial Office Africa Expedition. In 1830 Dent went into partnership with the renowned watch and chronometer maker John Roger Arnold which continued until 1840 when he left and set up business alone as E.J. Dent at 82 Strand, London, primarily making marine chronometers, watches and precision clocks.
In 1843 the firm expanded taking on a second premises at 33 Cocksur Street, with the Strand premises moving down the road to number 61 by 1851. In 1852 Edward Dent successfully tendered to make the 'great clock' to be housed in Stephen's tower at the New Palace of Westminster. The clock was completed by 1859, apparently at a financial loss to the firm, however it ensured that Dent became a household name synonymous with fine clockmaking. Unfortunately Edward John Dent did not live to see the installation of the 'great clock' as he died in 1853. He was succeeded by his stepson Frederick Rippon Dent, who, in partnership with his brother Richard, continued to expand the business.
By 1862 the firm had added 34 Cockspur Street and 34 & 35 Royal Exchange to their list of addresses and, although having seen natural passage of ownership over the intervening years, the business still continues to trade today as Dent & Co.
Dent started numbering their clocks, watches and chronometers from 1876 starting at number 38,000.
The design for 'Dent's Portable Tell-Tale' timepiece was patented by Thomas Buckney 12 th May 1862 (No. 1431) and essentially takes the form of a noctuary that is carried by the watchman. A record of his rounds would be recorded by inserting the timepiece into a series of cast iron receptacles fitted with punches secured at various locations on his route. This system has the advantage of being more cost-effective than the previous method of having several individual timepieces spaced around his route.

Chester(?) between the IIII and VIII numerals.

The gnomon is set at 52 degrees 30 minutes which is correlates to the approximate latitude of Birmingham.

A CONTEMPORARY LIMITED EDITION GILT BRASS AND ACRYLIC 'LOVE STAR' DESK TIMEPIECE

With quartz movement and recessed circular dial decorated with series of equilateral triangles with their apexes locating the hours within polychrome infill transitioning through a sequence of green, blue pink red and yellow tones, the hands formed as red hour and blue minute bordered triangles each thickening at one end to denote orientation, set behind a glass panel incorporating a repeating triangle decoration outer border, the rear with brushed gilt finish cylinder housing the movement applied with Agam trademark over inscribed copyright 1989 and MOVADO WATCH CO., 154/250 to the rear also incorporating knurled hand setting knob and threaded battery compartment cover, the rear of the dial below further inscribed 87.10. 802 N , mounted via a pin to allow rotation onto a gilt finish foot also inscribed Agam ; with a card box inscribed MOVADO to lid.
The timepiece 17cm diameter, 4cm deep, 20cm high including the pyramid foot.
The above timepiece was designed by the Israeli kinetic artist Yaacov Agam (born 1928 ) as part of his 'Multidimension Collection' series for Movado in 1989.

The gilt full-plate single fusee movement with four square section baluster pillars pinned through the backplate, scroll-pierced stop-iron block and verge escapement regulated by sprung three-arm steel balance with Tompion type regulation, the backplate with asymmetric foliate scroll pierced and engraved balance cock and scroll-decorated wedge-shaped foot, flanked by silvered regulation disc set within a conforming engraved panel opposing signature Jn'o Grantham, London and number 1682 , the circular slightly convex white enamel Roman numeral dial with Arabic five minutes beyond the outer dot minute track and sculpted blued steel beetle and poker hands, the inner case applied with suspension post and bow at twelve o'clock, the outer case with moulded collar to circumference, both cases with marks for London 1770 makers H.B. ; with a silver curb-link albert with nickel T-bar, (2).
The pillar plate 3.5cm (1.375ins) diameter, the outer case 5cm (2ins) diameter.
John Grantham is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in London circa 1762.
Condition Report:
Movement is in sound slightly dirty condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements, the gilding has minimal wear, discolouration or other blemishes. The movement is currently wound and will run but is prone to stopping indicating that a gentle clean/service is required. Faults to the dial are very much limited to a couple of light surface scratches; hands are nicely worked and appear undamaged although a little rusty. The inner case has had the suspension post re-secured with solder and the rear fairly crudely engraved with monogram 'J.E.B.' and wheatear decoration otherwise is in sound original condition. The outer case has wear to the clasp button and slight surface denting and evidence of working/hammering formr the inside otherwise is also in sound original condition. The albert is in good condition although the T-bar appears to be a nickel-finish replacement.
Watch has a winding key.

Hill, LONDON and date 1827 , with a 3.5 inch circular convex cream painted Roman numeral dial and blued steel hands set behind a hinged convex bevel-glazed cast brass bezel, the rectangular ebonised case applied with brass rosettes to the corners within a brass outer frame, the rear with circular hinged brass cover for the movement beneath a shield-shaped suspension loop; with a brass mounted ebonised sedan timepiece, early 19 th century, now fitted with gilt fusee verge watch movement inscribed B. Edmunds, Liverpool, No. 6415 , with a 4 inch circular convex white enamel dial with vertically aligned Arabic hour numerals and brass spade hands set behind a hinged brass convex glazed ogee moulded bezel, in a circular case with cavetto moulded surround and brass bound outer edge, the rear hinged brass movement cover beneath a suspension loop, (2).
The first 23cm (9ins) high including suspension loop, 13.5cm (5.25ins) wide, 5cm (2ins) deep; the second 20cm (8ins high), 15cm (6ins) diameter, 4.5cm (1.75ins) deep.
The rectangular timepiece in the current lot is probably by Stephen Hill who is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in London in 1839.

The French rectangular eight-day movement with platform lever escapement regulated by sprung monometallic balance and with integral hinged winding key to backplate, the 1.25 inch circular white Roman numeral enamel dial inscribed ASPREY, BOND ST. to centre, with gilt spade hands set within a silver surround fitted with a convex glass, the rectangular tortoiseshell case surmounted with a hinged break-arch handle over rounded top and bottom edges to sides, the rear with full-width hinged door, on silver bun feet, Hallmarks for London 1902 maker HA for Harris Adelstein.

A FRENCH GORGE CASED GRANDE SONNERIE STRIKING CARRIAGE CLOCK WITH ALARM
RETAILED BY ELKINGTON AND COMPANY, LIVERPOOL, LATE 19th CENTURY
The eight-day two train movement ting-tang striking the quarters on a graduated pair of gongs and sounding the hour every quarter hour on the larger of the two, with large silvered platform lever escapement regulated by sprung bimetallic balance and alarm mechanism positioned between the plates at two-o'clock sounding on the smaller gong, the inside of the front plate stamped 606 and the backplate with serial number 1814 to the lower left corner beneath initials F D within an oval cartouche to the upper edge of the gong block, the rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial inscribed ELKINGTON & Co., LIVERPOOL to centre and with blued steel moon hands over subsidiary alarm setting dial to lower margin, the satin-gilt brass gorge case with hinged carrying handle over rectangular top glass, trip-repeat button to front rail and channel-moulded uprights, the rear with pin-hinged glazed door over ogee-outline base with three-position selection lever annotated CLOCK/SILENT/QUARTERS to underside.
15cm (6ins) high with handle down, 10cm (4ins) wide, 9cm (3.5ins) deep.
The Liverpool branch of the celebrated firm of silversmiths, innovator of plated wares, retail jewellers and supplier of luxury goods is noted in Grace's Guide as being established by 1882. Subsequent adverts noted that they worked form 27-29 Lord Street up until at least the mid 1920's.
Condition Report:
CONDITION:
Movement is complete with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. All functions are working correctly, and the clock is running however the strike is very lazy and the mechanism is generally tarnished with dry lubrication hence will require a gentle clean/service before putting into long-term service. The dial appears free from visible faults other than very slight rubbing to the 'LIVERPOOL' text to the centre. The case is generally in fine condition with no visible chips to the glasses or noticeable wear to the gilding although the surface does have some overall slight spotting.
Clock does not have a winding key.

AN INTERESTING FRENCH LOUIS PHILIPPE PORTABLE MANTEL CLOCK WITH TWO-PLANE 'CHAFFCUTTER' ESCAPEMENT

The circular eight-day two train movement with two-plane 'chaffcutter' escapement regulated by sprung three-arm monometallic balance set between the plates and countwheel striking the hours on a bell mounted on the backplate, stamped with P.G., Brevete trademark to upper left and applied with plate engraved SILVANI, AT PARIS beneath stamped 2II to centre, the 3.25 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with slightly recessed centre and blued steel moon variant hands, set within a generous gilt twist milled bezel surround surmounted by silvered lunette-shaped regulation dial engraved RETARD/ADVANCE , the movement and dial mounted on an ebonised ogee outline pedestal upright inlaid with an oval motif flanked by scrolls to fascia, set on a circular base channelled to take the bell-jar type cover, with the glass contained within a brass two-arm frame incorporating ring handle at the apex and is secured via two latches to the underside engaging with integral pierced lugs passing through the plinth.
23.5cm (9.25ins) high with handle down, 14.5cm (5.75ins) diameter at the base.
Paul Garnier is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS Their history and development as born 1801 and studying under Antide Janvier before setting up his own workshops in 1825. Garnier was awarded Silver Medals in the Paris Exhibitions of 1827, 34, and 39; and gold medals in 1844 and 49. He worked from various addresses at Rue Taitbout, Paris and died in 1869 leaving the business to his son of the same name who was still exhibiting carriage clocks in the Paris Exhibition of 1889. In 1916 Paul Garnier's watch and clock collection was bequeathed to the Louvre. Garnier is generally credited for being the first maker to essentially standardise the 'petit pendule portative' which was in effect to become the prototype for the archetypal French carriage clock. The current lot utilises Garniers 'chaffcutter' escapement -the design of which is based on Sully and Debaufre's frictional rest watch/chronometer escapements.
Although Silvani is apparently not specifically recorded in the usual sources, many clocks stylistically dating to the period 1835-60 signed/inscribed for Silvani or J. Silvani are known. A carriage clock also made in the workshop of Paul Garnier but signed for Silvani et Cie is noted in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their History and development on page 57 (footnote 22).
The current lot is an interesting example in that it is conceived for the movement to be seen unhindered by casework whilst still remaining functional as a form of portable timepiece. With this in mind it mat well be appropriate to speculate that it may have been made for exhibition or sales demonstration purposes.

A VICTORIAN GILT CARRIAGE TIMEPIECE IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS COLE
UNSIGNED, PROBABLY LONDON, MID 19 th CENTURY
The eight-day single train going barrel movement with five-spoke wheel crossings and platform lever escapement regulated by sprung steel monometallic balance, the plates united by four delicate column-turned pillars pinned at the rear and the backplate stamped B 1831 to lower margin, the 2.125 inch wide rectangular silvered Roman numeral dial with fine matted ground asymmetric foliate rococo scroll decorated centre and conforming infill around the chapter ring incorporating regulation adjustment to upper margin, with blued steel spade hands and set within a gilt frame mask, the rectangular case with acanthus decorated scroll-shaped hinged carrying handle centred with a keystone motif over matted ground rococo decorated top panel flanked by ball finials, with stepped top mouldings over slightly projecting square section uprights to angles decorated with further rococo scrollwork, the front with hinged glazed door and the sides and rear with panels of additional matted ground foliate scrolls with the rear also incorporating diamond lattice work, on stepped skirt base with turned tapered feet.
12cm (4.75ins) high with handle down, 8.5cm (3.25ins) wide, 6cm (2.375ins) deep.
The design of the current lot can be compared to an example stamped and numbered by Thomas Cole illustrated in Roberts, Derek CARRIAGE and Other Travelling CLOCKS on page 276 (Figure 18-13 to the right of the image). Most notably the handle of the example signed by Cole follows a similar scroll profile and the frame has the same sequence of elements in its construction.
Condition Report:
Movement appears complete and all-original but is a little dry/tarnished. It is fully wound but the escapement will only beat for a few seconds before stopping. The escapement will keep running if a small amount of additional motive power is manually applied to the train hence a gentle clean/service is probably all that is required. The dial is in good original condition with faults essentially limited to slight wear to the numerals and overall light tarnishing to the silvering. The case is generally also in good original condition with faults limited to overall edge wear, tarnishing/dirt to the gilding and a few small bumps, scuff and scratches. The front door glass has tiny corner chips to three of the four corners which are only visible on very close examination.
There is no winding key included with this timepiece.

A FINE VICTORIAN ENGRAVED GILT BRASS STRUT TIMEPIECE WITH MANUAL CALENDAR

The eight-day movement of rectangular form with the mainspring barrel and all wheels of the train positioned behind a backplate occupying the lower two thirds with four back-screwed pillars, the upper section with vertical gilt platform English lever escapement applied to the inside of the frontplate, regulated by three arm monometallic balance with jewelled endstone and SLOW/FAST regulation lever to the balance cock, the three inch wide rectangular silvered Roman numeral dial with elaborate scroll engraved H monogram to centre and fine blued steel hands, set within fine floral bloom and foliate scroll horizontal line-hatched ground infill, over a tabulated manual calendar panel providing columns for dates-of-the-month next to a revolving day-of-the-week cylinder adjusted via a square to the underside, the dial set within a slender shaped gilt mask engraved with floral sprays to the fretwork decorated spandrel areas, behind a bevelled glass panel with rounded top corners, the case with leafy scroll engraved hinged suspension loop pivoted between shaped bracket upstands also decorated with foliate motifs and continuing as abstract angular scrolls to drape over the rounded shoulders of the rectangular frame, the front applied with a horizontal line-hatched ground leafy trail engraved bezel framing the glass incorporating shallow projections to carry gilt securing nuts with canted edges between, the top and sides of the frame applied with a continuous foliate strapwork decorated raised band within angle-hatched borders, over blocks at the base issuing sculpted waisted feet with rococo scroll panel engraved rotating support to the centre between, the rear with raised panel incorporating drop-down flap engraved C.F. HANCOCK, a Successor of, STORR & MORTIMER, by appointment to, H.M. Queen Adelaide, H.I.M. the Emporer of Rufsia, 39 Bruton Street, London revealing the escapement and HANDS setting square, over pivoted shaped strut foot drilled for the winding square, the underside stamped 643 , with original engraved gilt brass winding key.
15cm (6ins high) overall standing on the central pivoted foot, 10cm (4ins) wide.
The life and work of Thomas Cole is extensively documented in Hawkins, J.B. THOMAS COLE & VICTORIAN CLOCKMAKING . Thomas Cole was born in Nether Stowey, Somerset in 1800. His father, Thomas senior, was a local clockmaker who is now known to have moved his family to Taunton in around 1815; he was a talented maker who probably taught both Thomas and his older brother, James Ferguson, the clockmaking trade. By 1821 James Ferguson had moved to London and filed a Patent for a pivoted detent escapement, by 1823 he was working from New Bond Street where he was joined by his younger brother, Thomas.
Over the next twelve years the two brothers worked alongside each other and produced a series of highly complicated silver 'humpback' carriage clocks very much in the manner of Abraham Louis Breguet (leading some to speculate a connection between Breguet and the Cole brothers). The brothers then went their separate ways with James Ferguson going on to explore his technical abilities later developing a series of escapement designs including a 'resilient' lever escapement (1830), a 'double rotary' escapement (1840), a detached escapement calliper (1849) and an escapement with negative diameter (1859).
Thomas Cole sought to specialise in small decorative timepieces of the highest quality. By 1845 he was advertising himself as a 'designer and maker of ornamental clocks' and in 1851 submitted examples for display at the Great Exhibition, both under his name, and on the stands of other leading retailers such as Hunt and Roskel and C.F. Hancock. He then went on to exhibit at the Paris Exhibition of 1855 where his entry warranted an 'Honourable Mention', and again at the British International Exhibition in 1862 where he was awarded a medal for 'Excellence of taste and design'.
Thomas Cole was elected to the Royal Society of Arts in June 1861; he died three years later of typhoid fever, at his home at 1 Westbourne Park Road, Paddington, leaving his second wife Charlotte and their three children (two boys and one girl).
The originality and inventiveness of design coupled with the exceptional quality of finish ensured an enduring popularity for Thomas Cole's work, mainly from the rising Nouveau Riche class of Victorians made wealthy from the Industrial Revolution.
Charles Frederick Hancock was born in Birmingham in 1807. He was a partner in the famous firm of silversmiths, jewellers and retailers of luxury goods, Hunt and Roskell, who then went on to set-up on his own at 39 Bruton Street (as successor to Stoor and Mortimer) in 1849. In 1866 Charles Frederick Hancock partially retired hence the firm became Hancock Son and Company and then Hancocks and Company on his full retirement in 1870
This type of 'strut' timepiece is synonymous with Thomas Cole and were first introduced in around 1845. The earlier models were not numbered or signed by him but were often bore the names of retailers to whom he supplied. Hawkins notes that the earlier models also featured both the rotating central foot and hinged reap prop; whilst later versions dispensed with the rotating foot (see Hawkins, J.B. THOMAS COLE & VICTORIAN CLOCKMAKING page 48).
Condition Report:
Movement is in relatively clean working condition although a precautionary gentle clean and service is advised. There is no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The dial has a few very light surface scratches and slight oxidation to the margins. The numerals are a little faded including to the calendar beneath. The calendar adjustment operates as it should. The case is in fine condition with good strong gilding exhibiting next to no wear, oxidation or spotting. Faults are very much limited to some slight edge chipping/nibbling to the lower right-hand corner of the glass and minor casting blemishes to the feet.
Timepiece is complete with engraved winding/setting key.

CIRERD LONDON at twelve o'clock and delicate blued steel fleur-de-lys hands, set behind a glass with silvered bezel insert, the frosted gilt tazza-form case with eight-sided shaped outline top engraved with foliate floral scrollwork infill into a line-hatched ground and an inner band of entwined leaves bordering the dial, the underside with shallow bowl over upright formed from a radial arrangement of six stretched-scroll outline supports spreading out at the junction with the circular platform base, with the upper surface engraved with repeating spade-shaped motifs to the segments between the uprights, over engraved fluted collar to circumference and crisply cast stepped ogee mouldings forming the junction with the bottom ring, further engraved with repeating S-scrolls and fitted with six downcurved shaped-panel feet decorated with bellflowers, the underside with disc incorporating central winding square beneath shuttered HANDS setting and FAST regulation adjustment apertures opposing stamped number 1025, 3 to lower edge.

The life and work of Thomas Cole is extensively documented in Hawkins, J.B. THOMAS COLE & VICTORIAN CLOCKMAKING . Thomas Cole was born in Nether Stowey, Somerset in 1800. His father, Thomas senior, was a local clockmaker who is now known to have moved his family to Taunton in around 1815; he was a talented maker who probably taught both Thomas and his older brother, James Ferguson, the clockmaking trade. By 1821 James Ferguson had moved to London and filed a Patent for a pivoted detent escapement, by 1823 he was working from New Bond Street where he was joined by his younger brother, Thomas.
Over the next twelve years the two brothers worked alongside each other and produced a series of highly complicated silver 'humpback' carriage clocks very much in the manner of Abraham Louis Breguet (leading some to speculate a connection between Breguet and the Cole brothers). The brothers then went their separate ways with James Ferguson going on to explore his technical abilities later developing a series of escapement designs including a 'resilient' lever escapement (1830), a 'double rotary' escapement (1840), a detached escapement calliper (1849) and an escapement with negative diameter (1859).
Thomas Cole sought to specialise in small decorative timepieces of the highest quality. By 1845 he was advertising himself as a 'designer and maker of ornamental clocks' and in 1851 submitted examples for display at the Great Exhibition, both under his name, and on the stands of other leading retailers such as Hunt and Roskel and C.F. Hancock. He then went on to exhibit at the Paris Exhibition of 1855 where his entry warranted an 'Honourable Mention', and again at the British International Exhibition in 1862 where he was awarded a medal for 'Excellence of taste and design'.
Thomas Cole was elected to the Royal Society of Arts in June 1861; he died three years later of typhoid fever, at his home at 1 Westbourne Park Road, Paddington, leaving his second wife Charlotte and their three children (two boys and one girl).
The originality and inventiveness of design coupled with the exceptional quality of finish ensured an enduring popularity for Thomas Cole's work, mainly from the rising Nouveau Riche class of Victorians made wealthy from the Industrial Revolution.
The present lot is an extremely rare example of Thomas Cole's work and belongs to a group of relatively few designs for timepieces which follow the 'form' of other objects. Amongst these were extraordinary full-sized tilt-top tripod tables, an example of which was sold in these rooms, 15 th September 2015 (lot 170), for £60,000 hammer. Smaller models include bob-bon dishes, one of which was sold at Bonhams sale of FINE CLOCKS 13 th December 2017 (lot 62) for £10,000.
To the best of our knowledge the present lot is the only example of this design and has the complexity of the having the dial remote to the movement (requiring take-off work to be installed within the stem of the tazza). The large going barrel and five-wheel train to the movement would also suggest a duration of eight days.
The name 'J.B. Cirerd, London' inscribed to the top edge of the dial is most likely for the original retailer of the current timepiece, unfortunately no record of a retailer of this

A RARE MEISSEN PORCELAIN-CASED MANTEL CLOCK DECORATED IN THE LIMOGES ENAMEL STYLE

The circular eight-day two train bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum incorporating Brocot type regulation to suspension, the backplate stamped 1884 towards the left hand margin and 5 5 to lower edge, the 4 inch slightly convex circular blue-on-white enamel Roman numeral dial with large black Arabic five-minutes beyond the minute track and scroll-pierced gilt brass hands set behind a hinged convex bevel-glazed engine-milled bezel, in a rectangular architectural deep cobalt blue glazed porcelain case, with oval section twin handled urn surmount en grisaille enamel decorated in the Limoges enamel style with twin cherubs in flight and with generous gilt laurel band to the foot, over concave hipped superstructure further enamelled with panels enclosing gilt heightened Neoclassical scrollwork incorporating a winged muse to the front, and architectural cornice further decorated with Neoclassical motifs and with canted angles, the conforming front with scrollwork spandrel panel infill around the dial and to the canted corner panels, the sides with recessed panels finely enamelled with stylised Classical females over symmetrical scrollwork, the rear marching the front except for the lack of spandrel decoration to the centre panel and hinged circular glazed cover set into a shallow-arch recess, on gilt leaf moulded skirt base further decorated with panels of gilt-heighted Classical scrollwork over gilt leaf painted lobed bun feet, the underside with underglaze blue crossed swords mark.

This type of decoration was developed under Ernst August Leuteritz who was a designer and subsequent Director of the modelling department at Meissen 1836-86. Leuteritz introduced this type of en grisaille enamelling in response to the popularity of Renaissance style Limoges enamel decoration at this time.
Condition Report:
Movement is intact and will run and strike, however is in dirty/neglected condition hence will require a clean/service. The square for adjusting the Brocot type regulation is missing from the front of the assembly. The hammer and bell-stand have solder repairs and the pendulum is non-original also with a solder repair. The dial has a filled enamel repair just beyond the III numeral and is erroneously retouched '45' rather than 15 beyond. There is also a small filled edge chip above twelve o'clock; the hands are in good condition. The movement and dial are secured in the usual way (via straps secured by screws to the rear bezel) to a shallow-arch plate set into a conforming recessed aperture to the rear. The moulding of the porcelain suggests that this rear panel was originally intended to be a hinged door with fixing points/holes for the clasp and hinges incorporated into the modelling of porcelain. It would appear that these holes were never used, hence the current configuration may well be how the clock was finished. However, because of this detail, we are not able to offer firm assurances that the movement and dial are original to the case.
The case generally appears to be in fine original condition with no notable/visible damage evident. The urn surmount now has a later gilt metal cover; it may have originally had a porcelain cover (or not). The urn appears free from damage or noticeable restoration. The rest of the case also appears to be in fine condition with no visible chips or noticeable restoration. There is some slight movement/distortion in the porcelain evident from firing/manufacturing causing the front a rear to have a slight concave profile. The gilding exhibits minimal wear but does have some built-up grime within the crevices/edges. The interior has some firing cracks which have taken-on the blue colouring of the cobalt glaze; none of these are structural or problematic in any way. The feet are in good condition with no visible evidence of being re-attached etc.
Clock has a pendulum and a winding key.

SIGNED FOR LE CLERC, BRUSSELS, CIRCA 1790
The circular two train outside countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob with silk suspension, the 4.5 inch circular slightly convex white enamel Roman numeral dial inscribed LeClerc, a Bruxelles to centre and with Arabic fifteen minutes within the outer minute track, with blued steel moon hands and engine-milled bezel surround, the drumhead type case with large vase of flowers surmount issuing elaborate fruiting vine trails over the drum housing the movement and dial, supported on an out-swept cradle fronted with a panel cast with a Bacchante and attendant Putto, flanked by applied female masks to sides each adorned with fruiting vine and leafy spray surmounts, the rear with convex-glazed cover for the movement over a gilt panel, the skirt base applied with bead moulding to upper edges and inset with vine-leaf mounts to front and sides, on four engine-milled gilt toupe feet.

A clockmaker with the name Le Clerc is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as a maker of mantel clocks active in Brussels during the early 19 th century. A Jean Jacques Henri Le Clerc is recorded by Baillie as becoming a Master in Paris, 1787 hence it is possible that the present lot may be by him or another close relative who were perhaps displaced by the French Revolution.
Condition Report:
Movement appears complete with no visible alteration or noticeable replacements. The ratchet click for the going train wind is currently slipping hence needs attention, however the spring appears sound and the train will beat when motive force is applied to the train. The strike train is in working order. The movement is a little dull/tarnished hence a gentle clean/service is advised. The dial has fill-repaired chips around the winding holes and another to the edge at nine o'clock; these repairs are poorly matched hence would benefit from further work. The dial otherwise appears free from noticeable faults. The case is generally in very good original condition with faults limited to some slight denting to the left-hand side of the drum (at around ten o'clock) where the vine mount is secured as well as some slight rubbing and general discolouration/oxidation to the gilt finishes.
Clock has a pendulum but no winding key.

Louis Potonie is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history & development as working from 5 Rue Neuve Saint-Francois, Paris. They had a retail outlet at 20 Red Lion Square, London and exhibited many kinds of clocks including 'pendules de voyage' at the London 1851 Great Exhibition.
Condition Report:
Movement is in full working condition and appears complete and free from visible alteration or noticeable replacements. The mechanism is a little oxidised hence may benefit from a gentle clean. The dial is in very good condition with visible faults limited to a tiny corner crack to the XII numeral and small chip to the IIII numeral. The case is generally in very good original condition albeit slightly tarnished in places. The back door does not have a latch to hold it shut hence would probably benefit from having one made and fitted.
Clock is complete with a pendulum and a winding key.

The firm of 'Le Roy and Fils' can be traced back to 1785 when the business was founded by Basille Charles Le Roy at 60 Galerie de Pierre, Palais Royal, Paris. During the Revolutionary years the firm relocated to 88 Rue de L'Egalite before finally settling at Galerie Montpensier, 13 and 15 Palais Royal. In 1828 Basille Charles died leaving the business to his son, Charles-Louis, who continued producing clocks signed 'Le Roy & Fils' until 1845 when the firm was sold to his former employee Casimir Halley Desfontaines; who in turn was succeeded by his son M. George Halley Desfontaines in 1883.
In 1888 M. George Halley died leaving the business to his brother Jules Halley who then took-in as a partner Louis Leroy (apparently no relation to the founders of the firm). In 1899 the firm left Palais Royal and moved to Boulevard de La Madeleine where it continued trading in the hands of various successors until well into the 20th century. Such was the success of Le Roy and Fils that they were able to open branches in London, firstly at 211 Regent Street from mid 1800s to before 1885 when they moved to 57 Bond Street.
The 'Majolica' style case of the present lot follows very much in the Renaissance revival style made popular by the likes of Minton's and Della Robbia during the latter third of the 19 th century.

A FRENCH TOLE PEINTE CIRCULAR WALL CLOCK
UNSIGNED, PROBABLY PARIS, MID 19 th CENTURY
The circular two train eight-day countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum incorporating silk suspension regulation, the backplate stamped 7-2 over 576 and C towards the lower margin, the 6 inch circular slightly convex white enamel Roman numeral dial with blued steel moon hands set behind a hinged convex glazed egg-and-dart cast gilt brass bezel, the circular green japanned metal concave moulded case gilt painted with a generous continuous band of flowering foliage around the dial within a wheatear outer border, the rear with hinged cover and the top with an oversized gilt ball finial fitted with a suspension ring.
58cm (15ins) diameter, 44.5cm (17.5ins) high excluding ring.

A RARE VIENNA BIEDERMEIER LOCHENASH 'DACHLUHR' WALL TIMEPIECE
UNSIGNED, PROBABLY VIENNA, CIRCA 1830
The four pillar single-weight driven movement with plates measuring 4.25 by 3.25 inches enclosing five -wheel train and deadbeat escapement, regulated by steel rod pendulum with large diameter brass-faced lenticular bob reading against a silvered beat-scale applied to the lower edge of the case backboard, the 6.75 inch circular two-piece silvered Roman numeral dial with concentric canted gilt band around the centre, delicate blued steel hands and fine gilt engine-milled surround, the movement and dial supported within the case via keyhole slots to the backplate engaging with corresponding posts fitted to a brass plate applied to the veneered backboard, the exterior with shallow triangular pediment incorporating canted mouldings, over conforming cornice and full-height hinged rectangular two-panel glazed front, the sides with a conforming arrangement of narrow glazed apertures, the base of tapered concave form capped with cavetto pendant moulding.
