NEWTON, LONDON, PUBLISHED 1823 The sphere applied with two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved split half gores incorporating circular trade label inscribed NEWTON'S, NEW, TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, EXHIBITING, The Tracks and Discoveries made by, CAPTAIN COOK, Also those of CAPTAIN VANCOUVER on the, NORTH WEST COAST OF AMERICA, And M. DE LA PEROUSE on the COAST of TARTARY, TOGETHER, With every other Improvement collected from, Various Navigators and Travellers, To the present time, Made & Sold by J. & W. Newton 66 Chancery Lane, LONDON with additional text WITH CORRECTIONS and ADDITIONS to 1823 beneath to the Atlantic Ocean, with fully graduated equatorial and ecliptic rings and the Pacific with an analemma of the TABLE of EQUATION..., the oceans with many explorer's tracks and the land masses with nation states faintly colour tinted and principal cities labelled, topographic features labelled and also pictured, Antarctica with no land showing and the most southerly point annotated Firm Fields & Vast, Mountains of Ice, 71.10 Highest South, Lat'd Cap't Cook, the sphere pivoted via the polar axis within a brass meridian circle divided for degrees and with brass hour circle to the North pole, set within printed paper horizon ring annotated with compass points and degrees, together with Zodiac and calendar scales, raised on three slender inverted baluster turned legs united by conforming turned stretcher assembly over tapered feet. 67cm (26.5ins) high, 61cm (24ins) diameter overall. The highly regarded Newton family of globe makers was established by John Newton who initially trained under Thomas Bateman before setting-up business at 128 Chancery Lane, London in 1783. He moved to 97 Chancery Lane in 1803 and then again to number 66 in 1817, where he entered into partnership with his son, William, the following year. The engineer Miles Berry joined the business in 1831 forming the partnership 'Newton, Son and Berry' which lasted until 1841, when the firm passed to the ownership of William Newton's eldest son, William Edward Newton (1818-1879).

A RARE GEORGE III BRASS 'MOST IMPROVED' TYPE COMPOUND MONOCULAR MICROSCOPE THOMAS RIBRIGHT, LONDON, EARLY 19 th CENTURY The body tube signed THO'S RIBRIGHT, LONDON to exterior and with knurled screw rack-and-pinion focus adjustment for the insert fitted with eyepiece opposing objective assembly, set via a threaded bracket and slider with locking screw onto a triangular section limb over fixed stage incorporating tool apertures, further conforming slider and terminating with support for the pivoted plano-concave mirror, the whole raised via an axis pivot joint set behind the stage onto an architectural column uprights fitted with a moulded screw collar issuing three hinged tapered supports at the base, the microscope packed by reversing and folding the support assembly into the original horizontal mahogany box, incorporating fitted interior to take accessories including five additional objectives, a Lieberkuhn reflector, stage mounted condenser lens, forceps, three bone sliders, a sprung slider clamp and a frog plate, The instrument 54cm (21.25ins) high approx. assembled, the box 41.5cm (16.25ins) wide, 16cm (6.25ins) deep, 9cm (3.5ins) high. Thomas Ribright junior is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers as apprenticed to George Ribright in 1768 with whom he went into partnership at 40 Poultry, London in 1778. George Ribright died in 1783 leaving the business to Thomas who continued there up until around 1802, after which he is recorded as working from 20 Gloucester St., Queen's Square, London. He retired in 1806 and received charity from the Spectaclemakers' Company until his death in 1811. The form of the current lot appears to based on a the 'Most Improved Microscope' design made popular by W. and S. Jones after they acquired the stock and rights of George Adams junior in around 1795. Although the general design is often credited to them it was actually first outlined by Adams in his 1787 publication Essays on The Microscope . Condition Report: The tube is generally in very good original condition with the rack-and-pinion focus operating as it should. The smaller diameter objective tube has a noticeable dent as well as some very slight denting. The objective lens assembly has dust/dirt but instrument will focus and all lens threads etc. appear sound. The stage assembly is in good original condition, the intermediate sub-stage slider appears to be lacking its fitment (no condensor mirror present with the instrument that will fit the aperture). The plano-concave mirror is free from any problematic foxing. The T flange that forms the mount for the instrument onto the pivot joint is missing two of its four securing screws. The stand is generally in very good original condition. Instrument retains old lacquer finish but with overall wear and moderate oxidation. The box is in good original condition, a locating block is split/detached but present and there are a few vacant slots for accessories that are no longer present (three shallow baize-line apertures). The exterior of the box has a very slight shrinkage crack and a small veneer edge chip to lid and some slight wear to the edge of the base board towards the front right-hand corner. Otherwise faults are limited to relatively minor bumps, scuffs and other age-related blemishes, surface is essentially untouched and hence is currently a little flat/dull but colour is good. There is no key for the lock but both hook catches are present. Condition Report Disclaimer
