DESIGNED BY FELIX BRACQUEMOND (1833-1914) FOR E. ROUSSEAU A 'SERVICE ROUSSEAU' FAIENCE PART DINNER SERVICE, 1860s Earthenware, transfer printed and painted in enamels, naturalistically decoration in the Japanese Aesthetic style with coloured birds, flowers and insects. Comprising: a twin-handled tureen and cover, , a smaller vegetable tureen and cover, a double-lipped sauce boat with integral stand, two comports, two round serving dishes, an oval serving dish, two bowls, forty-seven dinner plates and eight soup plates Manufactured by LEBEUF MILLIET & CO.,/CREIL ET MONTEREAU with black printed factory marks Larger tureen; 40cm long Dinner plates; 24cm diameter This service was first exhibited at the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1867, with other early examples of the French interest in the Japanese style. The designs were commissioned by Francois-Eugène Rousseau from Félix-Joseph-Auguste Bracquemond who took the drawings directly from the Mangwa of Hokusai. The service was extremely influential both in France and also in England, notably on W. S. Coleman who produced closely related designs for the Minton porcelain factory. Condition Report: Multiple knocks, losses, fissures and repairs, across the service, consistent with age and use. The character and look of the set remains splendid. The tureens are in better overall condition, aesthetically they present well, a few small internal firing lines and some ingrained dirt in the craquelure. The oval dish in good condition. The cake stand with the ingrained discolouration to the craquelure too. One of the bigger circular plates has two substantial fissures. The sauce bowl has been heavily repaired with rivets. Of the two small bowl, one has a knock/loss at the rim and a strong hairline, the other has a been heavily repaired with rivets. Of the plates and shallow bowls at least 70% have multiple shallow chips to the upper border edge, and a few have hairlines/fissures. There may be other missed minor condition issues, but we have endeavoured to take an image of every item, please see additional images provided. Condition Report Disclaimer
