EARLY 19TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY SCOTTISH
The circular plate in a moulded and button-decorated surround surmounted by foliage, rockwork and a seahorse, with an apron of shell and thistle foliage issuing scrolled candle branches

Such mirrored girandoles were first promoted in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary , 1803, which stated `the perspective of the room in which they are suspended.... produces an agreeable effect ', and later in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration , 1808.
The thistle has long been the national symbol of Scotland suggesting
the mirror was supplied for a Scottish house. Interestingly a pair of convex girandoles similarly featuring seahorses or hippocampi were likely commissioned by Sir Lewis Grant, 5th Earl of Seafield, or his brother Francis William Grant, 6th Earl, for Cullen House, Banffshire, sold Christie's, London, 19 May 2016, lot 259 (£11,875 including premium).

This distinctive pattern of Windsor chair has traditionally been associated with the village of Mendlesham, Suffolk. The chairs were reputedly first made by Richard Day, born in 1783 but not listed trade directories until 1830 (as a cabinet and chair-maker). That he identified as a cabinet maker would explain why these chairs include elements of joinery rather than being entirely turned and bent, but variations among the large group of chairs indicate that there must have been a number of makers, all working in the same cultural tradition. The chairs offered here demonstrate stylistic differences within the group, mainly in the treatment of the chair backs. See Bernard D. Cotton, The English Regional Chair , Woodbridge, 1991, pp. 241 - 259.

Condition Report:
Good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks throughout. The handles are replaced and the cross-shaped motifs to the centre of each drawer are added (to mask earlier central knobs) . The top with marks and discoloration and evidence of old nailing associated with the earlier superstructure, there is a small square patched repair to the right end of the top.
Overall a good colour and patina and of useful small size.

Some staining and discoloration. Some drawers with sprung catches attached to their undersides (now broken). Some minor old worm. The upper right drawer part re-lined.
Overall a remarkably honest chest and a rare thing to be made of walnut.
