(6) Literature: Published London: R. Ackermann (parts I & II) or Smith, Elder & Co. (parts III-VI), 1826-1830. Captain Robert Melville Grindlay was a British soldier, artist, and banker. Grindlay, a self-taught amateur artist, went to India in 1803, aged 17, he served with the East India Company's military service from 1804-20 and during this period made a large number of sketches and drawings recording the life and landscape of India. The book was hailed as 'Next to Daniell, the most attractive colour plate book on India. One of the few books in which the name of the colourist is mentioned', see Abbey Travel 442. ENGLISH SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) AFTER THOMAS PACKER TWO VIEWS DEPICTING THE KEY SITES OF THE CRIMEAN WAR: A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE ENTRENCHMENT OF ALLIED ARMIES OF ENGLAND AND FRANCE BEFORE SABASTOPOL; AND A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE GULF OF FINLAND AND THE BALTIC SEA, WITH THE FORTIFIED PLACES FROM THE ALAND ISLES TO ST PETERSBURG Oil on canvas 94 x 126cm (37 x 49½in.) (2) These impressive and detailed topographical landscapes depict aerial views of the principal sites of the Crimean War on the Black Sea. They closely relate to the lithographs by Thomas Packer (active 1855-1880s) which were published in 1855. Their impressive scale and level of finish suggests that the works were commissioned by someone with a close association to the campaign Condition Report: The canvases have been relined, examination under ultraviolet light reveals a matt varnish, which makes the works somewhat difficult to read however, there are areas of fine brush strokes and hatched areas of retouching scattered throughout, particularly, but not limited to the sky and lighter areas. The painitings read well and are presented in gilded frames in good condition (see illustrations) and could be considered ready to hang without further attention. Condition Report Disclaimer

ENTRY TICKET TO THE FONTHILL ABBEY SALE OF 1823 Engraving on toned card signed by the auctioneer Harry Phillips and numbered No 918 (lower right) and with inscription (on the reverse) 18 x 11.5cm (7 x 4½in.) frame 24 by 17.5cm The ticket is made out to a Mr Langridge and Miss Lidler [?] and signed by the auctioneer Harry Phillips admitting two visitors for any two days of the public viewing ahead of the 37 day auction of William Beckford's vast art collection in September and October 1823. The engraving showing the Eastern Towers of the Abbey with the Central Tower beyond within a Gothic surround, was engraved by Thomas Higham after the drawing by the architect Stedman Whitwell.William Beckford (1760-1844) accrued large debts as a consequence of the collapse in the West Indian sugar market. He therefore invited the auctioneer James Christie the younger (1773-1831) to put Fonthill and its contents up for sale in 1822. 72,000 copies of the auction catalogue were sold and during the months of August and September 1822 between 600 and 700 people visited each day. In a a sudden change of plan and due to the huge interest caused, Beckford sold the Abbey and its contents at an inflated price of £330,000 to a wealthy Scottish gunpowder dealer called John Farquhar. The 1823 auction was therefore not instigated by Beckford, but by Farquhar and the sale was conducted by Harry Phillips (d.1839) who had formerly been senior clerk to James Christie senior (1730-1803). Public interest was again immense and the Duke of Wellington was said to have visited. William Hazlitt described the event as 'a desert of magnificence, a glittering waste of laborious idleness, a cathedral turned into a toy shop'. Beckford retired to Landsdown Crescent Bath, and purchased a number of items back from the auction. The main tower of Fonthill Abbey collapsed in 1825, and much of the vast structure was rapidly demolished thereafter leaving only the western end intact, Condition Report: Some browning from sunlight exposure and small scattered foxing, glass (visible) size is 18.1 x 11.6.
