A rare bronze figure of a crouching dragon, possibly Jin dynasty (1115-1234), cast seated on three powerful legs, its left forepaw raised above cloud vapor, the ferocious head detailed with a long curled horn above large protruding eyes and a long upturned snout exposing sharp fangs and a curled tongue, the sinewy body with long flowing flames issuing from its shoulders, its spine trailing to a upturned curving tail, 20.5cm high, 1928.5 gram
Compare a closely related example attributed to the Jin dynasty, similarly cast in a seated position with one claw raised grasping a cloud wisp and tail curled upward behind the back, discovered in Acheng, Heilongjiang province, now in the Heilongjiang Museum, Harbin, exhibited in Zhongguo jiyi. Wuqiannian wenming guibao [The Chinese Memory. Treasures of the 5000-year Civilization], Capital Museum, Beijing, 2008, cat. no. 59. A smaller example, with the left claw raised to support a 'Flaming Pearl' from the Junkunc Collection, was offered in Sotheby's, 10th September 2019, lot 231.

A Chinese bronze tripod censer, 17th century, tthe exterior moulded with emblems of the Eight Immortals, the base with an incised six-character mark, Yunjian Zhu Zhenming zhi , 'Made by Zhu Zhenming of Yunjian', in a rectangular panel, 11cm wide, weight 566 grams
The craftsman, previously unrecorded, evidently worked in Hu Wen Ming's workshop. It is difficult to be certain whether, as a master in his own right, he was able to use his own mark, or set up in competition after completely assimilating the Hu Wen-ming style without further documentary evidence.

A Sino-Tibetan parcel gilt bronze figure of Tsongkhapa , Qing dynasty, 18th century, the lama is seated in vajrasana on a lotus base with his hands in dharmacakramudra, a pair of lotus flowers trail along his upper arms and support the Sword of Knowledge and the Book of Wisdom. He is clad in monastic robes with the borders incised with scrolling tendrils. His face displays a serene expression with downcast eyes, urna and faintly smiling lips. His head is topped with a cap; the body is with traces of cold-gilding, 16cm high, 1510 grams
Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) is a revered Tibetan religious philosopher, and a central figure of the Gelugpa sect that ruled Tibet until the middle of the 20th century. According to tradition, he is an emanation of the Bodhisattva Manjushri. The attributes supported by the blossoms at his shoulder, the flaming sword that cuts through ignorance and the book of wisdom, are also those of Manjushri.

A pair of rare gilt-bronze and cloisonné enamel garlic-head vases, mark of Qianlong and of the period, (1736-1795), both shaped with rounded body, one attractively enamelled on each side with luxuriantly-petalled pink, yellow and purple peony flowers issuing from leafy branches, the other vase enamelled with auspicious birds perched on flowering wisteria and magnolia branches, all on a turquoise keyfret patterned ground, the body narrowing to a slender neck ringed by a gilt band and terminating in a bulbous mouth, the neck flanked by two ruyi-shaped handles, the gilded base cast with a six-character qianlong mark and of the period, 28cm high (2)
Provenance:
By repute formerly in the collection of former U.S. Congressman Perkins Bass (1912-2011) and by family descent and then to the current collector.
Cloisonné enamel vases with such a bulbous lower body and garlic-head mouth are extremely rare. See, however, a related example, 18th century, but of ovoid form and enamelled with floral sprays, previously from the collection of Baroness Salomon de Rothschild and now in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, illustrated by B. Quette, Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties , New York, 2011, p.164, fig.8.18. A related garlic-head vase, also enamelled with peony but slightly smaller (25cm high) was sold at Christie's Paris, 14 December 2011, lot 247. Compare also another example which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 11 September 2012, lot 344.
This particular shape appears to be associated with the highest order of imperial works of art dating to the Qianlong reign, as would suggest a magnificent pair of famille rose vases of the same shape with exceptionally well-painted butterflies and flowers sold at Christie's London, 9 May 2017, lot 99. A few other examples of comparable Qianlong period cloisonné enamel double-gourd vases are known, such as a pair sold at Christie's London, 15 May 2018, lot 4. Also see a similar pair sold at Christie's Paris, 10 December 2025, Lot 82
