A Chinese Han women's formal skirt , circa 1840, embroidered on a coral red satin silk ground with panels of dragon and phoenix, wide pleats, 90cm high hem to top of cotton band
These skirts with the dragon and phoenix motif were used for either wedding celebrations or part of court regalia when attending a Palace function with their husbands. They wore a three quarter length jacket and fringed waistcoat displaying a rank badge reflecting their husbands rank within the court.

In 1722 Richard Bourchier married in Calcutta, Bengal, India, Sarah Hawkins (1703-1739) who died in Calcutta. He was an official of the East India Company and served as Governor of Bengal 1750-1760 before returning to his home at Chaceley, Sussex.
