With a rectangular Sicilian jasper slab above a foliate panelled frieze with guilloche and beaded borders on beaded and acanthus-carved tapering and spiral-fluted legs, restorations to jasper slab

Rt. Hon. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay (1877-1945), Stepleton House, Blandford Forum, Dorset and thence by descent
Stepleton House was built in the mid 17 th century by Thomas Fownes on land he bought from George Pitt of Stratfield Saye. The property was sold in 1745 by Fownes' descendent, also Thomas, to Julines Beckford, brother of William Beckford of Fonthill House, Wilts. Beckford extensively remodelled the house and surroundings, adding flanking pavilions in 1758 and creating pleasure gardens by damming the River Iwerne. Beckford's son Peter inherited around 1764 and in 1773 he married the Hon. Louisa Pitt, daughter of George Pitt, 1 st Baron Rivers. The estate was ultimately sold by the (then) Pitt Rivers family in 1917.
Patrick inherited Stepleton from his great-uncle Sir Ronald Lindsay (d.1945), British Diplomat and Ambassador to the United States from 1930 - 39. Patrick however never lived at Stepleton, instead it was rented by Lady Amabel's cousin Robert Fermor-Hesketh who asked for Amabel's help in decorating it, retaining a number of pieces from Ronald's time including the impressive table offered here and three mirrors (lots 5, 60 and 198).
Condition Report:
Good `country house condition' , structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks. The jasper slab is generally good but with repair to front left corner and visible areas of filler across the top. The decoration scuffed and chipped, some losses to the carved decorations of the frieze rails, the legs scuffed.

Overall a good and attractive table, certainly by a top maker with access to interesting and exotic timbers such as Gillow.
Additionally, the castors are stamped B S & P PATENT beneath a crown; these castors have been recorded on several pieces of furniture with close association with Gillows.

The bookcase corresponds to designs issued by Thomas Chippendale in the third edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director , 1762. In particular pl. XCV illustrates a Library Bookcase with a stepped upper section, broken pediment centred by a plinth, and the lower doors with cut cornered panels. The bookcase offered here features the same variation in the glazing pattern as Chippendale's pl. XCIII, the centre doors having hexagonal panes while the flanking doors have rectangular panes.

Some dents and chips to leading edges and corners, for example to the cornice and projecting mouldings. The glass apparently largely original, one pane cracked to upper left of centre section. Some missing mouldings, including the upper side return mouldings of the base sections.
The shelves apparently original, four long shelves in the centre, three short shelves to the right, four to the left. The drawers with original handles and false escutcheons.

The chair back derives from patterns issued by Robert Manwaring, self described as a cabinet-maker of Haymarket, London, but whose reputation rests on several pattern books issued between 1760-66. He contributed the majority of plates 1-28 for seat furniture in the Society of Upholsterers' Household Furniture in the Genteel Taste for the Year 1760 , re-published in 1766 by Robert Sayer, while his best known work was The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion , 1765, subtitled as including upwards of one Hundred new and useful Designs for all Sorts of Chairs.....amongst which are some very elegant in the Chinese and Gothic Taste.
