UV light reveals a few retouches on the visage, most notably on the cheeks and above the left eye, as well as a few slight retouches on the cap and on the beard. Further restoration is visible on the hand resting on the skull, as well as a few retouches in the background. There is, of course, slight restoration on the splits. UV light reveals scattered retouches in the sky, and a 'T'-shaped restoration of approximately 8 cm in the land and sky to the left of the ruin on the horizon (near the left border). Further slight retouching is present on the figures, and an approximately 4 cm patch of retouching in the foliage just above Saint John the Baptist, together with a smaller one of approximately 3 cm in length. A further restoration of approx. 7 cm in present towards the end of the largest tree to the right, and there a few retouches in the water. Fine paint shrinkage is present throughout with a more prominent area to the upper right corner. Abrasions with some associated losses to the edges of the panel, commensurate with rubbing to a frame. Restoration to some of these areas are visible in natural light, most notably along the left and lower edges. A further abrasion of approximately 1.5cm is present to the upper right quadrant with corresponding retouching. THE MONOGRAMIST A.W. IN. F (FLEMISH 17TH CENTURY) VENUS AND ADONIS Oil on copper 58 x 80.5cm (22¾ x 31½in.) The present picture can be connected stylistically to the oeuvre of the artist signing 'A.W.IN.F.', active in Antwerp in the mid-17th century.Although traditionally identified solely as the painter Abraham Willemsens (1614-1672), more recent research, based on the inventory records of Antwerp dealers Musson and Forchondt, has revealed the A.W.IN.F. signature likely belonged to a whole family workshop of artists, all signing with the same monogram, which included Abraham, Antoni, Angela and Gilliam Willemsens (see Uwe Cordes, Das Monogram A.W.IN.F. und die Antwerpener Malerfamilie Willemsens (Oppenheim, 2021)). This workshop practice explains why, for example, no works by Angela Willemsens (1602-c.1670) have been conclusively identified, despite over 70 of her paintings being recorded by Musson-Fourmenois, the husband-and-wife dealership she supplied. The Willemsens workshop's paintings were often based on the models of the great Antwerp masters and exported to Paris, Spain and the Americas. In the case of this painting, the figures of Venus and Adonis relate to a prototype by Sir Peter Paul Rubens of which several studio versions are known (see Mythological Subjects: Paris to Venus (Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, XI.3), edited by Elizabeth McGrath and Bert Schepers (London and Turnhout: Harvey Miller/Brepols Publishers, 2025), no. 133a, Version I-IV, pp. 424-437). Bertin.', La Revue du Louvre et der Musée de France, nos. 4-5, p. 358, note 7 The subject of this painting is taken from the Book of Exodus (2:16-22): Jethro's daughters are driven away by Midianite shepherds while drawing water at a well, but Moses comes to their rescue. In gratitude, Jethro gives him his eldest daughter, Zipporah, in marriage. A smaller version of this subject by the artist is in the Musée de l'Hôtel Sandelin, Saint-Omer. Nicolas Bertin trained under Jean Jouvenet and Bon Boullogne before entering the Academy. He won the Prix de Rome in 1685 and, after returning to France in 1689, worked at Versailles with the support of his brother Claude, a sculptor. Until 1701, his work consisted mainly of small mythological scenes. He was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1703 with Hercules Releasing Prometheus (Louvre, Paris) and became a professor in 1715, later working for Louis XIV at the Château du Trianon and for Elector Max Emmanuel of Bavaria. Burwell Jr. Their sale, Christie's, New York, Old Master Paintings, 25 May 2005, lot 273 The feast of St Nicholas takes place on the 5th of December. The most important holiday in the Netherlands, it has been celebrated in the same way for centuries. Good children receive gifts from the saint. The little girl in the foreground, for instance, carries a toy which she got from the bucket of gifts on the table on the right. Naughty children, like the wailing boy on the right, only get a bundle of twigs in their shoe. Condition Report: The canvas has been lined, cleaned and re-varnished. Rubbing and abrasions throughout, but predominantly to the framing edges. There is a small scuff (approx. 1.5cm) with associated paint loss and over-paint (visible in natural light) to the lower right corner, and another similar area of over -paint (approx. 0.8cm) to the figure's hand at the far left lower edge. Inspection under UV reveals light scattered retouching throughout, together with a heavy green masking varnish which may be hiding further over-paint.Condition Report Disclaimer
