The lighthouse top with an open grill for light, guard rail, and set on a base carved with ascending spiral steps, with a column below
the whole approximately 178cm high, the lighthouse 73cm high
Lighthouse lamps such as these have been made in Cornwall from the early part of the 20th century- using stone mined from around the Lizard Peninsula, particularly near Kynance Cove. It rose to popularity in the mid 19th century when Queen Victoria and Prince Alberta ordered several polished examples for Osborne House from the Penzance Serpentine Marble Company. Typically worked pieces tend to be small; paperweights and table lamps. This example, a freestanding lighthouse set on original carved base is more unusual and rare.

Ewart & Son Ltd. was founded in 1834 with early products including zinc baths, window boxes, aquariums and ferneries. The company was at the forefront of the use of copper as a roofing material and were responsible for the roofs of Buckingham Palace, the Bank of England and other public buildings. This roof ventilator appears as 'Design T' in their catalogue from the late 19th/early 20th century.
