This depiction of the mythological lovers Cupid and Psyche is in keeping with Lucius Apuleius' 2nd century AD tale of The Golden Ass where the lovers are depicted as children. There are three near-identical bronze pairings of Cupid and Psyche that would seem to derive from the model attributed to della Valle: a pair in the Fasanerie Palace Museum in Eichenzell, another in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence and the pair offered here. Another marble group by della Valle circa 1730 is in the Wallace Collection (Inv. S22).
The attribution to della Valle is derived from an engraving of 1732 dedicated to the Florentine art connoisseur Niccolò Gabburri, where della Valle represents Cupid and Psyche in a near identical pose - albeit as a single group as opposed to two separate figures. The group is also recorded in Della Valle's inventory taken after his death in 1768 and listed by his biographers among his works.

AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A MATCHED PAIR OF CARVED WHITE MARBLE 'PIRANESI' URNS
The first probably Italian late 18th century in the Roman 1st century AD manner, the second late 19th century or later to match, each of Roman funerary urn form, with clasped flower finial above twin ram head set bodies with all-over floral tracery, with stiff leaf carved socles on plain disc feet

Literature :

The rendering of the leaf tracery to the body, the floral semi-pierced lid and bud finial would seem to draw on a "Vase in the possession of His Majesty", Plate 28 in Moses "A collection of Antique vases".
The distinctive ram heads would seem to derive, in part, from a depiction of a "Vaso antico di marmo" in the Museo del Cavalier Piranesi, illustrated by Piranesi and published in Rome 1768-1778 (see British Museum collections 1886.1124.136).
The design of the lid also bears close comparison with that on a vase held in the V & A Museum, which is catalogued as "one of several produced by G.B. Piranesi's workshop, probably during the 1770s" (accession number 3348&A-1856). As well as being an architect and etcher of ancient Roman subjects, Piranesi ran a thriving business concocting 'ancient' sculptures and vases which he sold to foreigners visiting Rome. The earlier vase and cover in this lot, is typical of work produced from his workshop, as well as those of Bartolomeo Cavaceppi and others.

Urns such as these would have been used to carry hot chestnuts from the fireplace to waiting guests. When not in use they remained on the chimney lintel as decorative ornaments. Unusually this pair do not have the more commonly seen ring and mask handles but scroll handles of a type seen more often in porcelain of the period.

This bronze is after the Augustus of Prima Porta, a life size Roman marble figure of Augustus Caesar completed in the 1st century A.D. and discovered at the Villa Livia at Prima Porta. The original is now in the Vatican Museum. Benedetto Boschetti, 74 Via Condotti, Rome, active c.1820-1870, exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition 1851. The Boschetti workshop was renowned for the exceptional quality of its copies of Antique vases and objects, for example a rosso antico reduction of the Warwick vase in the Toledo Museum, Ohio (A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tempo del Gusto, Roma e il Regno delle Duo Sicilie, Milan, 1984, Vol II, fig.286). F.S. Bonfigli noted in 1856 that 'The Establishment is particularly conspicuous for its great variety of marble works, bronzes, etc.' (A. Gonzalez-Palacios, The Art of Mosaics, 1982, p.166).

It is probable that this has been cast after a known bust by Chiurazzi. A period version of this from 1900/1910 sold at Kaminski Auctions, Massachusetts in November 2017 for $9000. With faint title to front Settiminio , the likeness of the portrait has been refashioned slightly to fit in with a counterpart-bust of Hadrian that Chiurazzi also produced.

The original Centaurs were discovered during excavations (conducted by Monsignor Furietti) at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli on the outskirts of Rome in 1736. They were acquired by Pope Clement XIII from Furietti's heirs and placed in the Capitoline Museum. Bronze reproductions were made by famous 18th century bronze foundries such as those established by Righetti and Zofolli to cater for demand from Grand Tourists. Their decorative appeal to the Georgians was enhanced by the fact that they were a classical, symmetrical pair. An 18th example from the Righetti workshop can be seen in the V&A collection (Accession number: 979-1882).

Also known as ' Venus aux Belles fesses ', this figure based on a Hellenistic marble statue now held at the Museo Nazionale, Naples. The title refers to a 3rd-century story by Athenaeus in which two peasant's daughters asked a young passer-by to settle their dispute concerning which of the two had the shapelier buttocks. His choice of sister became his 'reward' and he married her, whilst his brother married the other sister. After the weddings, the sisters dedicated a temple to Venus Callipygos at Syracuse.

Hercules and Lichas was one of the first colossal statues created by Antonio Canova and was commissioned in 1795 by the Aragon Prince, Onorato Gaetani. The original marble is held in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. A comparable figure of near identical scale is held by the National Trust on display at Felbrigg, Norfolk (NT 1399566).

This bust presents stylistic similarities with the four busts representing Pomona, Ceres, a Naiad and a Nymph, by the brothers Ignazio and Filippo Collino circa 1770 for the Savoy's family luxurious hunting lodge, the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi. When comparing the busts, there's a strong resemblance in the delicate facial features that lend them a serene and graceful presence, and particularly in the lips betraying the slightest smiles. The sculptural detailing and surface texturing of the marble, which contrasts the smooth skin of her face with the undulating strands of hair resting on the shoulders, attest to both the exquisite artistry and the technical skill of the sculptor.

The original marble group of the 'Farnese Bull' was excavated in 1545 at the Baths of Carcalla and by 1546 it had been placed at the Palazzo Farnese in Rome. Also known as the Fable of Dirce, in the 1550s at the suggestion of Michelangelo the group was restored and placed in the Palazzo courtyard. The popularity of the group was such that in 1662 Louis XIV tried unsuccessfully to purchase the sculpture and by 1826 it was housed in the Museo Nazionale, Naples.

The model was purchased by Pope Julius II in 1512 and it was traditionally identified as being a portrait of Cleopatra, an attribution that changed by the early 19th century. The figure has here been reinterpreted as Lucretia, with the addition of a dagger and chest wound.

Andrew Currie was born the son of a farmer and abandoned an apprenticeship at Chatham dockyard to become a self-taught sculptor. His principal works were Mungo Park's Monument at Selkirk, Hogg's (the Ettrick Shepherd) monument at St Mary's Loch, the Bruce monument at Stirling Castle, the angel figures on Drummond's Tract Depot at Stirling, and the figures of Edie Ochiltree and Old Mortality on the Scott Monument.
