AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A NAPLES BRONZE FLOOR LAMP WITH ORIGINAL PARCHMENT SHADE CIRCA 1900 175cm high, base 42cm wide Provenance : Yvette Guilbert (1865 - 1944), 28 bis Boulevard Berthier, Paris; and by descent, Sold by her descendants at Artcurial, Paris; There acquired by Rose Uniacke, London; From whom acquired by the present owner This statuesque floor lamp was made for the Parisian actress and cabaret singer Yvette Guilbert, remaining with her descendants until recently. Guilbert was a muse of many of the great artists of the Belle Époque including Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Pablo Picasso, and most notably, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who dedicated his second book of sketches to her, encapsulating with great affection the singer's pale skin, shocking red hair, and signature long black gloves. Guilbert's international success enabled her to commission the architect Xavier Schoellkopf to build a spectacular Art Nouveau mansion on Boulevard Berthier in Paris in 1900, for where this lamp and several other matching articles were commissioned for Mme. Guilbert's bedroom. The design of this sculptural floor or standard lamp follows a 3rd - 5th century B.C. Etruscan thymiaterion (incense burner), that was possibly cast from a Pompeian original by the leading Neapolitan bronze foundry Fonderia Chiurazzi. It is interesting to note that this lamp predates, and may well have influenced, those of notably comparable form by Diego Giacometti (1902-85), which also depict birds perched upon triform bases, and were supplied with similar stitched parchment shades. Likewise, that Mme Guilbert continued to commission pieces from the leading designers in Paris including a piano by Jacques Playel, decorated in lacquer by Jean Dunand, in 1913. Condition Report: Overall with a verdigris patina, this is antique in appearance and probably uneven by design, almost certainly originally fitted for oil and later fitted for electricity - the current fittings are modern The shade is in presentable order, it attaches via three internal eyes and is held by the tension of the metal arms from the lamp - this is all entirely solid and stable at time of report Please see additional images for visual reference to condition and appearance Condition Report Disclaimer

Y A FLEMISH BRASS-INLAID EBONY AND PARCEL-GILT TABLE DE MILIEU ANTWERP, CIRCA 1670 The gilt-tooled red leather lined top in a border of cartouches, with a walnut-lined drawer to one side, on tapering facetted legs joined by stretchers and with ball feet, th e leather stamped C LEWIS 66cm high, 65.5cm wide, 43cm deep Provenance: Possibly William Beckford; Bearne's, Torquay, Devon, 20 October 1999, lot 756 The tiny leather stamp ‘C LEWIS’ on the leather surface of this table is that of Charles Lewis (1786-1836), London’s leading binder in the early 19th century, patronised by the great collectors of the day including the Duke of Devonshire, Sir Mark Masterman Sykes, Edward Vernon Utterson, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, Lord Spencer, and William Beckford, who described Lewis as ‘the first artist in this line that Europe can boast of.’ A number of tantalisingly enigmatic elements suggest the possibility that Beckford himself may have owned this table. In the early decades of the 19th century, Beckford was purchasing items that might then have been considered old-fashioned, including Boulle and early ebony furniture. The contrasting black, red and gold would have harmonised with Beckford’s scheme at Fonthill – indeed, he commissioned a set of ebonised, parcel-gilt chairs in the Anglo-Dutch 17th century taste, upholstered in red Morocco leather around 1820, contemporaneous with this leather writing surface. A remarkably similar table, conceivably from the same workshop, is in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet, Paris, and previously displayed in the Cabinet Colbert de Villacerf, salle 17. The scale and inlay is almost identical and, intriguingly, the top was inset with a tooled brown leather in the late 19th century, advancing the possibility that this replaced a crimson writing surface, and that the two tables once formed a matched pair. Likewise, there is no known provenance for the Carnavalet table. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age and use Cleaned and polished appearance overall, the gilt has been refreshed, this is slightly uneven in places The leather inset with age, probably not the original, but has signs of age and use including patina, marks, signs of use and handling, unevenness to the surface and creasing from underlying timber joints, overall the frame is solid and stable There are old woodworm holes to the underside of the drawer, the lock is later and there is no key present - it is open at time of report Please see additional images for visual reference to condition and appearance Condition Report Disclaimer
