WHITE MARBLE BUST OF A YOUNG WOMAN DATED 1891 Possibly representing Night, portrayed gazing slightly downwards, with stars in her tied hair, with flowers and a crescent to her draped decolletage, the reverse inscribed C. LAPINI, Firenze 1891 69cm high, 39cm wide Published : Illustrated in Country Life, 28 March 1996 Provenance : Formerly a Victorian manor house in the Devon/Somerset borders, until at least 1996. Until latterly the Ducommun dit Verron Collection. Lapini was mostly active in Florence, and was known for his allegorical and mythological sculptures, as well as his carvings after the Antique. He is recorded as a participant in several Italian exhibitions including the General Italian Exposition of Turin in 1884, and in Rome in 1888. AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A PAIR OF BRONZE FIGURES OF THE FURIETTI CENTAURS ITALIAN, 20TH CENTURY Modelled after the Righetti model without supporting tree trunks, on polished black marble bases 29cm and 33cm high overall, the bases 24.5cm x 10cm Literature: Francis Haskell and Nicholas Penny, Taste and the Antique, Yale 1982, page 178 The original Centaurs were discovered during excavations (conducted by Monsignor Furietti) at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli on the outskirts of Rome in 1736. They were acquired by Pope Clement XIII from Furietti's heirs and placed in the Capitoline Museum. Bronze reproductions were made by famous 18th century bronze foundries such as those established by Righetti and Zofolli to cater for demand from Grand Tourists. Their decorative appeal to the Georgians was enhanced by the fact that they were a classical, symmetrical pair. An 18th example from the Righetti workshop can be seen in the V&A collection (Accession number: 979-1882). Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Bothe with firing marks, small flaws and holes, later bases. Older figure with cracks to his rear left leg and hole visible to its reverse, slightly wobbly on base, younger with scuffs around rear right haunch, hole to rear left leg, and small crack to one hoof, Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. Excavated in 1506, the group was acquired by the pontiff Pope Julius II and placed in the Belvedere courtyard of the Vatican. A PAIR OF ARTIFICIAL STONE RECUMBENT GREYHOUNDS ATTRIBUTED TO AUSTIN & SEELEY, CIRCA 1840 62cm high, 133cm long, 42cm wide A corresponding pair of greyhounds of the same size feature in the company's 1841 catalogue: 'Austin and Seeley's Artificial Stone Ornaments'. For an identical pair of dogs, see Christie's London, The Secret Courtyard: The Seago Collection (6129), 9th June 1999, lot 393 (£17,250 incl. BP) Felix Austin started making artificial stone in 1828 and established works in New Road, London. Austin's material was made from Portland cement, broken stone, pounded marble and coarse sand and Austin encouraged leading architects and designers to work for him. Around 1840 Austin entered into partnership with John Seeley who had trained at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1841 Austin and Seeley published their first catalogue, 'Collection of Ornaments at Austin & Seeley's Artificial Stone Works for Gardens, Parks and Pleasure Grounds...'. The firm continued in production until about 1872.
